2WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY
Introduction:
In this paper I will present my realisation after watching a documentary film on
Deepwater Horizon Explosion named BP: $30 Billion Blowout.
Expectation before watching the video:
I had very basic idea about the case of Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion,
which was a devastating incident in the history of oil and gas industry. Therefore, with those
ideas I was expecting that this video would be more in-depth documented analysis of the
underlying reasons and consequences. I expected that this video would penetrate the exterior
knowledge and interpretation of the regulatory causes of this massive pollution and economic
impacts while presenting a descriptive and documented approach on it.
How has this changed:
After watching this video, my perspective on this incident along with its reasons and
consequences has changed significantly. Before watching this video, I perceived this incident
as an example of failed administration procedure by the British Petroliam Company plc (BP)
which caused a massive Environmental pollution, Economical loss and socio-cultural turmoil.
After watching this I also realised that how political aspects and international trading
relationship could also be a part of the Occupational Health and Safety and Hazardous
Incident Management policies and procedures. This documentary also allowed me to perceive
this issue more deeply while considering its all internal and external influential causes which
could lead to another disaster in the history of Industrial development.
Changed perspective about this issues:
This documentary allowed me to develop my understanding on how a faulty
occupational health and safety can cause a very destructive consequences. It is not only

resulted death of 11 workers while injuring 17 workers working on that drilling rig on 20th
April, 2010, it also rise a scaring warning sign to all the companies who are dealing with
offshore and onshore industrial businesses. I can also say that trusting too much on the
coastal line oilrig industries and lack of imposing strict monitoring over their work procedure
contributed to this terrible consequences.
Relating this video to learning module:
From the module on Occupational Health and Safety that deals will all kinds of safety
and security measures for the workers as well as the business, I have learned that WHS policy
should need adequate invigilation from regional and national government as well. The hazard
reporting and hazard identification system should be reported to the government to the
foreign nation where the business is conducting an offshore industrial operation. It has been
found that similar incident of blasted concrete had already occurred in Caspian Sea on
September, 2008. As per my learning module, this kind of situation needs serious attention
and emergency imposing of health and safety regulations and monitoring. However, in this
case the lack of internal advocacy of BP, I can see clearly.
What I have learned and pass on to others:
From this video I have learned that, even a small discrepancy in WHS policy
implementation and administration procedure can cause a unexpected destructive resalt to the
business, politics and human society. Therefore, I will try to pass this realisation to all my
peers, relatives and other person related to me, for taking this WHS issues seriously in their
personal and occupational practice.
