AI Summary
This research plan investigates the detrimental effects of air pollution on both the environment and human health in Delhi, India, a city grappling with severe air quality issues. It highlights the rationale for studying this topic, emphasizing the need to address environmental challenges arising from rapid industrialization and modernization. The research aims to identify the primary sources of air pollution in Delhi and strategize solutions to mitigate their impact. Using a qualitative approach, the research will review existing literature and collect data from Delhi hospitals regarding respiratory and cardiovascular diseases linked to air pollution. The expected outcome is to contribute to the reduction of air pollution and improve public health, emphasizing the significance of this research in addressing global environmental concerns. 1. Title
Impact of air pollution on the environment and human health in Delhi, India
2. Introduction
Climate change has become one of the most prominent environmental issues throughout the
world. There are various factors that have contributed towards such global climate change.
One of the primary factors is a rapid increase in pollution of air, water land and other
resources. In this regard, it may be mentioned that air pollution significantly contributes to
climate change due to the release of several green house gases accelerating the rate of global
warming (Noyes & Lema, 2015). Delhi being one of the biggest and most flourishing cities in
India has a high rate of air pollution. According to the Air Quality Index Scale, the air
pollution level of Delhi has been identified to be 154 in the year 2020, which is regarded as
unhealthy (Aqicn.org 2020).
3. Rationale for the Topic
The topic of air pollution in Delhi and its impact on the environment and health of the people
has been chosen in order to determine the effect of pollution as a major contributor to the
global environmental challenges. Furthermore, the topic also helps in highlighting the
negative impacts of rapid industrialization and modernization in the capital city of India. The
significant objective of the research is to evaluate the primary sources of air pollution on
Delhi and devise strategies with the help of which emission of pollutants may be prevented or
at least reduced.
4. Background
The World Health Organization has defined air pollution to be the contamination of outdoor
and indoor environment through physical, biological or chemical agents, which ultimately

alter the characteristics that are natural to the atmosphere (Afro.who.int 2020). The major
pollutants that contribute to the contamination of air include carbon monoxide, nitrogen
dioxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and other particulate matter suspended in the air. Air
pollution has proven to be one of the major determining factors in the phenomena of rapid
climate change throughout the world. Various aspects to the phenomena of climate change
including the greenhouse effect, global warming, depletion of the atmospheric ozone layer
and melting of ice-caps are directly related to the various forms of pollution to which the
earth is subjected to (Jackson, 2020). Delhi being one of the biggest cities in India has been
subjected to rapid industrialization and modernization. The steady growth of industries in the
city have automatically led to the increase of industrial emissions. Furthermore, with the
increase of population in the country due to larger number of people migrating to seek job
opportunities in the city have increased the amount of household emissions and vehicle
emissions (Kumar et al. 2015). Furthermore, other factors such as the bursting of fire crackers
on special occasions, combustion of garbage and the like have increased air pollution in the
city significantly.
5. Significance
The significance of the topic in discussion lies in its relevance with the environmental issues
faced by people and countries across the world. India, being one of the major developing
countries in the world, has been undergoing rapid industrialization, which has had some
negative impacts on the environment. However, it is necessary to address these
environmental problems and strategize solutions that will be able to ensure the safety of not
only the environment but also the health of the public.

6. Research question
What are the causal factors behind the high level of air pollution in Delhi and how can it be
controlled?
7. Aim
The aim of the research is to strategize solutions to reduce the air pollution in Delhi and
ensure the safety of the environment and health of the public.
8. Objectives
The objectives of the research are:
To analyze relevant literature on the issue to identify the major sources of air pollution in
Delhi
Strategize solutions to reduce the impact of air pollution on public health and the
environment
9. Methodology
9.1 Justification
The research will analyze the various sources of air pollution in Delhi and the
different medical issues faced by the people due to air pollution.
9.2 Description
The research will be conducted using a qualitative approach through the review of
relevant research on the issue as well as collection of data from certain major
hospitals in Delhi regarding the lung or cardiovascular diseases of the admitted
patients, along with the reason for the illness.
