CE 3.2 Project Background
CE 3.2.1 Characteristics of the project
The project of Design and Fabrication of Railroad Construction for Subway was my
third important project in engineering career. Rail transport can be defined as the specific
means to transfer its passengers or goods over the wheeled vehicles that are running over
rails, called tracks. Railroad is even termed as the train transport. In the contrast of the road
transports, where the vehicles could run on any prepared flat surface, the rail vehicles or the
rolling stocks are eventually guided by these tracks where they are running. These tracks
generally comprise of the steel rails that is being installed over the ties or the sleepers
or ballast, where this rolling stock, generally fitted with the metal wheels or moves. The other
variations could also be possible, like the slab tracks, where these rails are eventually
fastened to the concrete foundation that are resting over any prepared subsurface. This project
was executed for the subways.
CE 3.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
This particular project of Design and Fabrication of Railroad Construction for
Subway consisted of two objectives. They are as follows:

utilized my skills or knowledge of civil engineering for the perfect success of any project. I
eventually knew that when each and every member would be applying their analytical skills

success. I am a hardworking person and have excellent skills for problem solving. As I have
various experiences in the projects of real life, I used my significant experience in the specific
project. I have skills to convince several people, who are working under me and hence, I
could say that I comprise of leadership skills. As a specific civil engineer, the leadership
skills are required in the project and thus I had utilized them perfectly.
CE 3.3.3 Comprehending the Theory of Project
Steel utilized within the manufacturer of the rail tracks is extremely purer or harder
than any other, for coping with the incrementing axel weights and the total tonnage of newer
services of rail. The heat treatment comprised with the higher level of silicon, carbon, and
manganese utilized in the manufacturing makes cutting or grinding operations much tough.
The rail applications need the higher safety standards where the abrasives are being utilized
within the hardest environment and under time pressure.
The safety instructions that are given by the specific machine manufacturer should be
followed. The abrasives must not be utilized near the inflammable materials or within any
environment where there is an extremely higher risk of the explosion. All the sparks must be
directed away, if possible in the floor. All the work pieces should be strongly fixed on starts
of cutting and grinding.
The rail cutting off wheels are solely available within 300 mm for the clamped rail
cutting machines which operate at the speed of 80 m/s. For the specific clamped rail cutting
machines, which operate on the speed of 100 m/s wheels are accessible in the 350 mm and
400 mm. The bore dimension of the respective cutting wheel could be adjusted with the help
of the various reduction rings, which come up with original machines. Two separate kinds of
the grinding machine can be commonly searched for the grinding or removing the welds and
finally re profiling tracks; which is portable hand held as well as track mounted machineries.

The straight cups and the organic disc wheels for the purpose of grinding the head and the
lateral edges of this track are utilized on the machines of track mounted. The various
operational factors could be influenced the specification of wheel needed for this application.
We maintained three guidelines for this project. They were selection of the soft grade,
selection of a harder grade and finally selection of the correct abrasive. These three
guidelines were useful for our project and helped us in making the project successful.
CE 3.3.4 Identified issues and their solutions
3.3.4.1 Issues
Some of the most significant issues or problems were identified in this project. Two
significant issues of the project were needed to be solved on an immediate basis. They are as
follows:
i) The system of the cable tension was eventually planned for installation by the
utilization of the embedded anchor. When it was tried to be installed; proper casting was done
out of position. This particular problem took place whenever the major contractor tried to
install a cable system. The next important issue that I had noticed was that there were cracks
in concrete slabs for the drying shrinkage. Furthermore, this system of the cable tension was
subsequently suffering from corrosion. The corrosion was absolutely aqueous in nature since
it was involved in the electrochemical phenomenon.
ii) The next issue that took place in the project was while the successful installation of
the utilized panels. During the stage of installation of these utilized panels, various crane ties
were the most important issue, which was stopping these panels to be installed, and hence the
weather tightness was being stopped. Now, as this weather tightness was being stopped, we
lateral edges of this track are utilized on the machines of track mounted. The various
operational factors could be influenced the specification of wheel needed for this application.

were unable in completing our rest of the construction, since we knew that it would be losing
the longevity.
3.3.4.2 Solutions
To solve these above mentioned issues, I suggested suitable solutions to all the issues
and hence they were solved quickly. The significant solutions to all of these issues are given
below:
i) For the continuation with the perfect installation of the cable tension, I provided
suggestion for utilizing chemical anchors. I also arranged a specific hilt to attend the site and
gave recommendations regarding the sizes or types of chemicals that are to be utilized. All of
these chemicals were eventually fitted or cored and finally pull out tests were carried out. For
the various cracks in the concrete slabs, I gave the suggestion for using the lowest ratio of
water and cement. For the issue of corrosion, various non corrosive metals such as stainless
steel as well as aluminium were used.
ii) For the next issue, I gave the suggestion that all the utilized panels are to be
properly stripped for the line of crane tie. This allowed the entire framing in installing when
this crane was being detached. The major contractor was being assisted in a manner and
hence delays were reduced.
CE 3.3.5 Plan to produce creative and innovative work
My plan was to produce innovative and creative work by working collaboratively. I
segregated my entire work properly and each task was executed properly and with utmost
sincerity. Moreover, regular follow-ups were taken, so that the project does not face any type
of problem.
