After paying attention to the emotional tone of the passages, I have tried to understand what is
really going on in the passage. The tone in the novel is basically about the determination and the
persistent craving to fit. The story is mostly told Frankie who is an industrious man. He
appreciates every little activity that he carries out because he considers that as a little hard work.
The boy Frankie is haunted by the past of his mother while in Japan where he grew up together
his other siblings. Frankie is always thinking about his mother. They had a mother-child
connection back then because of how his mother took good care of him. He was a bit strange
from the others because of his spot that never faded. In the cases of Aki, his mother and the
others, the spots were red and faded with time while that for Frankie only turned darker and
whenever he was bleeding, the blood that was coming from him was black and not red like it
should be.
He felt sad because of the spot and this made him sick and weaker each day. However, his
mother was there for him always during that time. While the others went outside to play, his
other could remain with him and make stories to him on the bed where he was sleeping. She
could make stories to him and they could laugh that made Frankie to feel better at least. One of

the stories that his mother told him was about the stories of the priests’ misfits followers that
made Frankie to laugh. In short his mother was always there for him and this is the main reason
why he was haunted by his mother’s mysterious life back in Japan.
In response to Frankie’s thoughts about his mother, this shows how important it is for mothers
to always try and be close to their children and show them the care that they deserve. It is
important for children to be taken good care of and made to feel happy all the times. This is
revealed in the novel when Frankie was down sometime back due to his black spot that was
turning darker day by day and his mother was always there for him. It is always a good feeling
when later in the future children are able to remember their parents just because of the close
connection that they once had with them.
He grew up in a house that was floating and he was always optimistic. He was ever business
minded however how little the task would be. He thought of building a hotel on the water where
people used to pass to go to work because that could be bringing some income to him to change
the situation that he was in. though he came to meet some people who showed him a little bit of
how to go about life. However, his dreams were shuttered by the war that broke in that region
and after that he moved again to Toronto to try his luck there. Ambitious people who have the
undying determination to make changes in their lives always achieve more. The past is enough
experience to depend on to be able to make changes in the future and we should always
appreciate and remember the important people in our lives like our parents just like Frankie did.
