Activity What is the scope of your sustainability policy?
The scope of the sustainability policy is to address the various sustainable
factors related to the functions of the organization. The sustainable functions
that are to be associated with the organization are environmental sustainability,
sustainability of the workforce, Social sustainability and economic sustainability.
The policy would address the three broad categories of sustainability which are
environmental, social and economic. The policy would be focused towards
minimizing the impact of the organization on the environment. Moreover, the
policy is poised to enhance the optimized performance of the organization with
regard to maintaining environmental efficiency of the organization. Additionally
the scope of the policy will incorporate all the major developmental areas of
environmental sustainability that are covered by the regulatory and legal
agencies of the government. Reduction of wastage, usage of cleaner energy,
enhancing the eco-friendly prospects of the organization will be essential areas
covered through the policy.
What sources of information have you gathered to help you plan and develop
your policy?
The sources of information that have been in relation to the environment
of the operations of the organization have been consulted. The
sustainability policies and regulations of Australia have been consulted to

understand the level of emissions that are classified as safe for the
environment. The Environmental Protection and biodiversity conservation
act 1999 has been consulted as an essential source. Moreover, the
international community’s sustainable development plan has been
consulted for gathering essential information about the best practices,
efficient techniques and most desirable outcomes of sustainability. Along
with the same information has been gathered about the local communities
and the indigenous communities have been given much importance while
framing the policies. The other information sources include journals,
books, websites and research literatures on sustainability, government
archives and other essential sources of information.

The local communities are an important stakeholder for the sustainability
functions of the organization. The local communities are intrinsically connected
with the environment of the organization. Many of the natural resources that
are present within the vicinity of the operational facilities of the organization
are used by the local communities. It is important that the organization
essentially communicates with them in regards to the policies for sustainability.
The communicational needs in this case would need to be interpersonal in the
primary level. Meetings need to be help with the leaders of the community and
the community development centers. The communities should be informed of
the developmental processes. Moving forward the next important engagement
function would to be take part in activities of CSR. This will help to build a
stronger relationship with the local communities. Recruiting the members of
the local communities would further strengthen the relationship. Hence, the
organization and the local community can work hand in hand towards a
sustainable mutually beneficial future. The local NPOs and the government
agencies for the development of the local community can also be consulted. It is
important to consider if the local communities include Aboriginal or the islander
tribal communities. If so then necessary steps should be taken to ensure their

Activity What strategies could you include to reduce toxic material and hazard
chemical use and employ life cycle management approaches?
Life cycle management becomes important as it helps to maintain the efficiency
of the production process. In order to do the same it focuses on reducing
wastage and diminishing or mitigating the generation of toxic wastage from the
production processes of the organizations. Life cycle management techniques
that can be included are utilizing life cycle maps, life cycle matrix and life cycle
assessment and evaluation tool for lifecycle. The mapping tool helps to
understand the product lifecycle, the matrix helps to build knowledge of the
lifecycle of the product. Life cycle assessment techniques and evaluation tools
can help to understand the impact of the product throughout its life duration
and formulate options for design. Presently, various organizations are focusing
on the usage of eco0friendly raw materials for the production of goods. The
focus is on reducing wastage that are toxic and releasing only clean effluent in
the outside environment. More user friendly interfaces are being developed.
Some organizations like Amazon are using eco-friendly packaging in order to
enhance the prospects of cleaner productivity. The organization could include
the same eco-friendly packaging techniques to improve the post-sale wastage
of the product. Less utilization of natural resources can be done through the
usage of more efficient technology. Processes that decrease raw material
utilization while improving productivity at the same time are available in the
market. The same can be used towards better product lifecycle management. It
is important to understand that the growth of the sustainability value of the
organization is directly linked with the better lifecycle management techniques
that can be utilized by the organization. The organization has to better plan and

Activity Demonstrate how you can make recommendations for a policy based on likely
effectiveness, timeframes and cost.
The policy that can be recommended is a sustainable utilization of
resource policy to reduce wastage in the organization. The effectiveness
of the policy would be determined by how much reduction in utilization
of resources can be achieved despite maintaining the same level of
productivity. This would contribute greatly towards the essential
growth of the organization. It can be said that policies of sustainability
are focussed towards the essential development of the organization but
at the same time not harming the environment in doing so. Better
technology needs to be used. For example- ERP technology can be used
to properly plan allocate and utilize resources. It provides complete
data in regards to how much resources are required to be utilized
effectively towards productivity. Subsequently, machinery that would
help in the quick procurement and processing of the raw materials need
to be used. The maximum timeframes for implementing the new
policies could be set to be 6 months. The sooner the better should be
the focus of the policy. The cost of the implementation needs to be
considered. In the environment of Australia the minimum estimated
cost for such a program would be around AUD 2, 50,000. The
timeframes should be considered more essential if this cost needs to be
reduced. Lesser timeframes can often cause more cost effective
measures. Thus, implementation of the plans become very important. A
proper planning needs to be conducted before utilizing the same
towards increasing the productive performance.
