Success of every team is highly influenced with the fact that how efficiently the whole
team is approaching its operation's to support the team objectives. The practices adopted by the
team is an important part for the team to ensure the success in the respective organisation.
Constant level of communication in team meeting over the progress of team operation motivate
all the members of team to put more efforts towards achieving the goal and objectives formed
behind the team formation (Jacobsson and Wilmar, 2019. This can justify that effective team
working put a huge impact over the operations of team. Success of every team is highly
influenced with the way team operate its functions and operations. The working style of the team
decide and formulate the standards which motivate and direct the team to achieve the overall
success and achieve all different objectives set behind the formation of the whole team.
Barriers to effective teamwork
Collaboration is the main factor due to which teams are formed as in a team many pitfalls
can be overcome that can arise while working individually. When individuals in a team are not
able to perform well due to prejudices that are already prevailing which acts as a challenge
towards accomplishing the assigned tasks efficiently and effectively (Gavrilă-Paven and Cordoș,
2017). Some common barriers that can come in the path of working effectively in a team due to
conflicts and challenges associated with communication arises on the ground cultural diversity in
the student cohort are as follows:
Shirking duties by individuals: Due to vast diversity in a student cohort it happens that
some are extraordinarily hard-working due to which they perform additional tasks over those
who are underperforming. This results in resentment and leads to the development of negative
feelings among team members and accordingly, team becomes ineffective.
Lack of trust: Effective teamwork requires effective collaboration which in turn requires
to have an inherent confidence among team members that they are sharing a set of goals equally.
In the absence of this confidence, members feel uncomfortable sharing their views, opinions and
ideas with others in a team (SHEHZAD, 2018). Accordingly, misunderstandings and
miscommunication can take place that undermines the efforts of team.
Conflicts hamper progress: Conflicts always arises when individuals having different
backgrounds are working together. It can have negative impacts on team performance and
accordingly ineffectiveness takes place which hampers team's progress.

backgrounds are working together. It can have negative impacts on team performance and
accordingly ineffectiveness takes place which hampers team's progress.

Too much diversification: Diversity is being encouraged in a team but if it is much
higher than required, then it would result in ineffectiveness. Communication and coordination
becomes a complex task. Also, decision-making requires large amount of information to cater to
the needs of different individuals (Pandey and Karve, 2017). Outcomes can also get suffered due
to conflicts and consensus among team members. This leads to undermining of group think
which limits creativity, poor choice of alternatives and leads to many mistakes which in turn acts
as a barrier to effective team work.
Dominating team members: Many times it has been seen that members in a team are
dominating over other team members which affects fair and equitable participation of all the
team members and in turn poor performance of the team as those who are not able to utilize their
power to make decisions may feel demotivated and losses interest in accomplishing group goals
as they know that there efforts would not be getting recognized due to the presence of some
dominating team members. In this way, underperformance and less creativity arises in a team
and makes it ineffective.
Communication styles: In a team with vast diversity, there are higher chances that
diversity results in differing communication style among team members. As some have the habit
of communicating in a general sense while others prefer specific communication (Eisenberg,
Post and DiTomaso, 2019). This leads to the issue of inappropriate commands, instructions and
directions which affects the performance of team members and makes them ineffective.
Types of roles needed for the creation of cohesive and effective team
Creating an effective team and cohesive team becomes possible by starting with the right people,
putting and assigning them with the tasks in correct manner. Some roles that can be played by
different individuals in a team to form an effective and cohesive team are as follows:
Leadership role: Leaders play an important role of providing directions, motivation, vision to the
team members along with forming rules for the team to effectively and cohesively work with
each other in a team (Cooper-Duffy and Eaker, 2017). Leadership helps in establishing
cohesiveness which allows for effective communication in a team in addition to provide
directions for how to report things to the superiors. In this way, leader allows for accomplishing
team goal in the required manner by avoiding their prejudices associated with different cultural
aspects.
