INTRODUCTION
Companies always hire skilled managers and leaders those who can manage business
activities effectively. Managers are the person those who find solutions in each critical condition
so that entity can run its operations smoothly (Arar and et.al, 2016). Present study is based on
Hilton hotel which is the multinational brand and conducts its operations across the world.
Present report will discuss different management styles that are applies in organization.
Furthermore, it will describe characteristics of leadership. In addition, study will explain own
managerial and personal skill that are required for carer development.
TASK 1
A. Different management styles and Leadership characteristics
Hospitality industry is the service industry where companies have to provide quality
services to its consumers. Hilton hotel is the popular brand that offers high standard services to
its consumers so that they feel happy and satisfied (de Poel, Stoker and Van der Zee, 2014).
Mangers have to adopt effective management styles that can support business unit in retaining
skilled labour in workplace for longer duration and can help in smooth functioning of the firm.
Different management styles are described as below:
Coercive management styles
It is the directive styles. Managers or higher authorities of the entity control over the
employees and ensure that their all workers perform their duties well. Mangers of Hilton hotel
adopts this management styles (Inandi, Tunc and Gilic, 2013). Mangers of cited firm instruct
their employees and direct them in such manner so that they can perform their responsibilities
well. Company creates huge pressure on the employees by implementing strict rules and
regulation. Hard environment of workplace sometimes demotivate people but managers provide
reward to the employees in order to motivate them. Discipline makes the person able to raise
their skill and level of performance (Jimenez, 2016).
Active management style
It is another type of management style in which manager of the company give easy
instruction to the employees and do not create tough environment in workplace. They try to
create healthy workplace environment where all people feel comfortable. Mangers take care of
workers and make them feel happy by fulfilling their needs. This motivates them and they put

their hard efforts to contribute well in the success of business unit. ASDA follows this
management style in its workplace (McCleskey, 2014).
Contingency management style
It is the type of style in which managers identify the situation and according to the
situation they behave in organization. If there is requirement to create pressure on employees
then they create pressure but if it is required to create healthy environment then they change their
management styles. This helps in maintaining balance in the organization.
Leaders are the persons those who lead the team and guide them in such manner so that
they can perform well in entity (Meyer, 2014). Autocratic leadership is implemented by the
leaders of Hilton hotel. Leaders do not involve employees in decision making process. They just
circulate the instruction how to do the work. Characteristic of leadership are as following:
ï‚· Positive attitude: Leaders of Hilton hotel always take care that they behave positive with
employees. This motivate them and encourage them to perform well. They making
people aware with their responsibility and guide them well (inclair-Maragh and Gursoy,
2015).
ï‚· Empowerment: It is another characteristic of leadership that is in the senior managers of
Hilton hotel. Company adopts autocratic leadership but managers of cited firm time to
time take suggestion of employees and give them power to share their views with
managers. But due to strict regulation leadership can not empower the employees
completely (Vacik and et.al, 2014).
ï‚· Communication flow: It is another major characteristic of leadership. Leaders have to
coordinate well with workers and have to communicate each information in correct way
so that no confusion take place. In the Hilton hotel managers interact with the employees
through face to face meeting and make them aware with changes. This helps in making
them understand with the necessity of modification so that they give their full support to
the entity (Zumitzavan and Michie, 2015).
ï‚· Motivation: It is another feature of leadership, leaders of cited firm motivate people and
make them feel happy so that they retain in workplace for longer duration.

B. Communication process
Communication is important aspect that helps in smooth flow of information and support
in minimizing confusions (Components of Communication Process, 2017). Communication
process applies in Hilton hotel is as below maintained:

Hilton hotel adopts up-down communication process. Higher authorities coordinate with
employee through email and send them information on it. If any workers has any confusion then
they can revert back to this emails and can raise their quarry. Written communication is follows
in the company (Vacik and et.al, 2014). But some times when important message needs to be
circulated then managers of cited firm adopt verbal communicate method. They conduct face to
face meeting and interact with staff members.

Managers of the firm coordinate with the staff members verbally. In this process they
communicate verbally and send message to them, once message is received by the employees
then managers take feedback from them. As if any person has any issue then they can discuss in
the meeting. This helps in coordinating well with the staff members (McCleskey, 2014).
C. Organizational culture and change
Organizational cultures reflects values, believes of the business unit. Culture of the firm
impact on the business performance to great extent. If entity has positive culture then it will
make employees feel confortable and they will like the workplace. The main motivate of Hilton
hotel is to satisfy its workplace and retain them in the organization for longer duration (de Poel,
Stoker and Van der Zee, 2014). For that cited firm arrange training programs for its employees
so that they can improve their skills and can perform well in the workplace. Managers take time
to time feedback from the workers so that they share their feeling with the managers. Company
implements innovative ideas so that it can offer creative and quality services to the consumers.
This helps the firm in raising its profitability to great extent. In order to enhance confidence of
employees, mangers of Hilton hotel measure their performance and give them rewards and
recognition on the bases of their performance (Arar and et.al, 2016). This creates positive
environment in workplace and people feel motivated.
Whenever Hilton hotel plans to make changes in corporation then it first communicate
with all employees and make them aware with necessity of changes. They make them aware
benefit for them after changes (de Poel, Stoker and Van der Zee, 2014). This helps in making
modification in cited firm effectively. .
TASK 2
A. Own management skills and performance
To perform as a manager in the hospitality industry, it is essential for me to have some
managerial skills so that I can perform well in the organization. If I do not have these skills then I
would not be able to perform my duties well (Zumitzavan and Michie, 2015). My management
skills are as following:

Being manager it is essential to have good motivation skill so that I can be able to
encourage my team members. I have good motivation skill. I can encourage people by offering
them reward and recognition. My leadership skills are good but sometimes I feel that I fail to
make personal relationship with workers. As I am working in Hilton hotel as manager. I have to
communicate all the tome with higher authorities and with my lower staff members. I can
communicate well with them but when it comes to coordinate at corporate level then it creates
problem for me. I can identify critical conditions and can forecast things. I make contingency
plan so that when such condition occur so that I can mange it well.

have to manage multiple works at one time but as I have good managerial skill thus, I become
able to perform well and manage all these tasks properly. Another strength of mine is my critical
thinking skill. I always observe the situation and forecast the future. This helps in analysing the
issues that can take place in the future. Thus, I make contingency plan in advance that supports
me in managing critical situation effectively. I have realised that my listening skills are not good.
Some times I mis some words while communicating with others due to lack of concentration. By
this way later I feel confused in understanding the issue. I have poor technical skill this is my

drawback. I have good knowledge of market thus, it is opportunity for me to grow well in my
career. Positive thinking approach of mine always help me in performing well. Threats that can

B. Objectives and targets to develop own potentials
Objectives and targets for developing my own potentials are as following:

latest technologies so that I can manage operations well and can maintain records of each

A. Motivate team to achieve organizational goal
Hilton hotel aims to retain its skilled people in the organization for longer duration so that
entity can provide quality services to its consumers and can enhance their satisfaction level. It is
responsibility of managers that to encourage them and provide them healthy workplace
environment so that people feel happy and satisfied (Arar and et.al, 2016). For that entity time to
time conduct meeting with the employees and take their suggestion. It involves them in decision
making process. That asst the managers in knowing needs of the people and fulfilling their
requirements so that employees feel motivated and perform well in the organization.
Company makes effective communication with the employees and give them power to
share their views (de Poel, Stoker and Van der Zee, 2014). This helps the business unit in
encouraging people and making them feel comfortable in the firm. Managers of Hilton hotel
gives reward and recognition to the workers. This reward and recognition helps the cited firm in
encouraging the people in the workplace and retaining them in organization for longer duration.
Company workers in a team and make others able to work in a team well. This helps the
organization in accomplishing goal of the firm significantly. It makes fair policy for the all
workers so that they get accurate guidance and healthy workplace environment. That encourage

In order to achieve the organizational goal managers of Hilton hotel provide reward and
recognition to the employees. It is effective managerial decision because by this way people feel

their best efforts and contribute well in accomplishing goal of the business unit. Hilton hotel is
facing the issue of high staff turnover ion such condition (Zumitzavan and Michie, 2015). If it
makes effective communication with staff members and encourage them then it will be able to
identify their needs and will be able to fulfil their requirements. It is the best way through which
company will be able to make the people loyal towards the brand and will be able to retain them
in the organization for longer duration. Effective communication supports in building strong
relationship with the workers and making them loyal towards the firm (Vacik and et.al, 2014).
Fair policy is the best way through which entity can be able to gives attractive facilities to
the workers by this way they will like the company and will retain in the workplace for longer
duration. Fair policy and healthy environment, make them feel happy and they deal with
consumers well. This enhance satisfaction level of consumers as well which helps the firm in
increasing its profitability (Components of Communication Process, 2017).
TASK 4
A. Effectiveness of own skills support in career development
As I have good communication skill that helps me in managing by work effectively. With
the help of my communication skill, I become able to coor5dinate with my team members well.
That develops strong relationship with my peer group and they always support me. This
relationship helps in managing changes and minimizing conflicts situation in workplace. I have
good problem solving skill, it is my strength. As I always read previous cases that assist in
improving my knowledge about market and by this way I became able to prepare plan so that I
can resolve such type of issue through my contingency plan. I have good communication skill
that is effective in my career development. With the help of my motivation skill I will be able to
motivate my employees and will be able to prove myself as good manager. My aim is to become
marketing head in Hilton hotel. I would be responsible to train staff and retain them in workplace
for longer duration. If I motivate well to them then they will feel happy and will sustain in the
workplace. All these skill of mine will help me in becoming the marketing head in Hilton hotel
within 2 years.
