1. Task 1 Part 1
1.1. Definition of Workplace Sustainability Policy
Sustainability refers to the capability of meeting vital human needs and requirements in
the present in an equitable fashion without compromising in anyway the capacity of future
generations to go ahead and meet their needs through the preservation and protection of
natural resources and eco systems. The very notion of sustainability describes conditions
where the use of all natural resources by human beings as required for continuation of life are
in harmony with the ability of nature to replenish such resources. A workplace sustainability
policy involves embracing green or eco friendly practices in the office with the aim of
conserving and preserving the surrounding natural environment and the earth’s resources at
large. The scope of a workplace sustainability policy is one that extends to recycling waste
materials as much as it is possible to do so, making use of recycled products, keeping the
usage of energy low and engaging in the limited use of paper and printed materials (Hughes
et al. 2017).
1.2. Developing a Workplace Sustainability Policy for Market World
Shopping Center
The workplace sustainability policy for Market World Shopping Center is one that will
entail the following –
Being a shopping center that is quite old, Market World Shopping Center will make
use of energy efficient cooling and heating systems.
Forty percent of the wastes generated during operations shall be recycled by Market
World Shopping Center

the Market World Shopping Center over email as well as through the distribution of leaflets
and pamphlets. The social media pages of the Market World Shopping Center on Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram will also contain vital information about the sustainability measures
that are being introduced and followed at the shopping Center. Such a method of
communication and planning will give stakeholders such as customers and investors to make
their views and opinions regarding the workplace sustainability policy known to the
management more readily and easily (Ma 2017).
1.4.3. Waste Management (Solid and Water)
There will be separate garbage containers placed across the length and the breadth of the
shopping mall for the adequate disposal of all types of solid wastes. Containers meant for
hoarding and disposing toxic solid wastes will be separated from containers that are meant for
the disposal of non toxic wastes. The disposal of water wastes will be through the form of
discharge through sewerage. Both water and solid waste management is something that will
take place on a daily basis so that the environment at the Market World Shopping Center
remains as free from toxic vapors as possible (Ochoa et al. 2018).
1.4.4. Air Emission Management
Air emission management is something that will be ensured at the Market World
Shopping Center through the implementation of a proper system of ventilation. A good and
elaborate system of ventilation will be set up in each and every store in the shopping center
so that toxic or stale air finds a release and that fresh air is allowed to come in. The use of
exhaust fans will be made compulsory in parts of the shopping center where there are eateries
and restaurants so as not to cause discomfort for the visitors at the shopping center while
ensuring proper air circulation at the same time. Proper chimneys will be set up for the same
purpose (Ochoa et al. 2018).

engage in the use of protective equipment so that they do not injure themselves when doing
so. Examples of protective equipment includes gloves, helmets and boots as well as specific
coats that are not easily inflammable and which will not put the life of the people who are
handling the hazardous materials in danger (Hughes et al. 2017).
1.4.6. Environmental Emergencies and Response
An environmental emergency team will be in place in order to look into the management
of disasters if these arise. For instance, the environmental emergency team will be put to
action immediately if there is a fire outbreak in the shopping center or if sustainability
measures are being violated, such as if there is a leakage of hazardous materials into areas
where these are not supposed to be accessible. The employees at the Market World Shopping
Center will have contact details of the members of the environmental emergency team so that
they can get in touch with them immediately in the event of a potential or actual disaster
(Onnis 2019).

Adequate security measures shall be put in place across the length and breadth of the
Market World Shopping Center so that environmental hazards are not seen to arise, such as
the outbreak of a fire due to the misuse of toxic materials or leakage in drains and sewers that
leads to the entire shopping arcade becoming flooded with filthy water. The security
measures at the Market World Shopping Center shall also be evaluated from time to time to
