Understanding Sustainable Development in ASEAN and Poverty Reduction

The intent of the letter is to present in front of you the ways in which the learning in Canada
would aid the student in developing a better understanding of the Sustainable Development
Agenda of 2030. The letter would also elucidate the ways in which such understanding would
assists the student in combatting the situations related to poverty as well as mitigate the gaps
those exist in the development goals.
The primary concern of the researcher in this respect would involve the area of poverty,
especially in the ASEAN region. The preamble of UN general assembly has taken it upon
themselves to eradicate the factor of poverty from several dimensions where they might
express themselves. Their aim toward doing so aimed at emancipating the people from its
‘tyranny’. As such, they seek to eliminate the disparities prominent in various region of the
world as a first step of removing poverty and hunger from the scenario.
The rising factors of discrimination and differences among the citizens of the world is
contributing to the rise of poverty and thereby inhibiting its citizens from a leading a life of
dignity. The proposition of the agenda of 2030 in respect is to empower people. The people
whose needs have been reflected in the doctrine included people from different sphere of life

including the youth, children, disabled and many others. It also includes people from other
spheres of life. As such in the agenda of ensuring sustainable development to the people in all
spheres of life, the agenda of the year 2030 highlights its goal as the on of eradicating poverty
from all spheres of life (sustainabledevelopment.un.org 2020).
According to the researches conducted it has been seen that out of the entire population of
ASEAN house, 1.3 billion people lives in the condition of acute poverty, whose sum of total
living accounts for the total of USD 2.00. As such the impact of the poverty can be
experienced on the environmental sustainability. The reaction is both ways as the poors are
also increasingly affected by the degradation experienced in the nature. As such, the
degradation of the nature and ecosystem is intrinsically poverty stricken lifestyle of the
people concerned.
There have been fluctuation in the rate of economic growth in ASEAN that went on
throughout a few years, which is the reflective of the dynamism in the sphere of social
development. Though the economic disparities there has been a certain amount of growth in
the public sphere that facilitated the investment in it. However, the disparities in the
development can be seen in the differences in the investment in the public sectors. However,
despite of Singapore and countries like Brunei, one of the challenging key social issues have
remained the causes of concern for most of the countries who have failed to eradicate poverty
from their social and economic sphere. Despite of the attempts taken at ensuring sustainable
development in this region, about more than 50 million people are still residing in a state of
acute poverty. In order to arrive at their desired goals it is necessary for the strategies taken in
order to mitigate the challenges of economic development to align with the developmental
goals taken to eradicate poverty. In order to achieve the same it is important that the
understanding is developed regarding the fact that the environmental factors are closely

linked with that of poverty and thereby affects the issues of economic development (Uttama
2015).
In order to combat the situation noted in respect of ASEAN it is important to consider the
goals as they have been put forward in the sustainable development in the agenda of 2030.
According to the agenda, the first goal undertaken by the committee is toward eradicating
poverty from the social sphere (Jeong-Soo and Kyophilavong 2013. By the year of 2030, it
was aimed at eradicating poverty for those who had to live with a provision of $1.25. At least
the goals aims sat reducing the number of people living under poverty by 50% till the end of
the year of 2030. The sustainable development goals of 2030 aims at ensuring the holistic
development from different perspective. As such the cases of ASEAN demands holistic
caring (chm.aseanbiodiversity.org 2019).
The case of ASEAN has exhibited that it requires overall catering from the perspective of the
environmental issues, developmental sustainable goals. The sustainable developmental goals
aims at eradicating the issues of poverty by looking at it from different perspective. As such
the understanding will be guiding the student in achieving his future goals.
