The study talks about personality development comprising of both personal as
well as professional development of an individual. Personal development consists of
all the aspects in life a person wants to improve upon regarding the behavior,
qualities, social skills and ultimately with the aim one wants to fulfill in own life. The

2. Definition of the concept of personal and professional
development
Personal development starts with analyzing self personality as to what are the
person's traits, strengths and weaknesses. It relates to how the person feels and
reacts in a group, how comfortable he is in expressing his views and the impression
he leaves on other individuals. The next stage is seeking a manner to hone the
behavioral characteristics and skills to empower oneself and set personal goals to
achieve. The goals depend from an individual perspective in life. He/She may like to
gain confidence while speaking in a group, increase social stature, be a spiritualistic
person or simply get high employability (Chen and Huang, 2017). With reference to
Maslow's hierarchy theory of needs and development, it can be seen that an
individual would first like to get his basic needs fulfilled, then move on to safety
needs which comprise of health security, job security etc. The next need arises of
social esteem in which a person wants recognition from his social circle of relatives
and friends. The next stage a person wants to achieve is self-empowerment in which
person assesses his own self worth and starts knowing things at which he is good
and wants to excel in the same. The next stage comprises of person searching for
creativity in life which gives him happiness. Last stage is of self actualization which
means person able to gauge the purpose of life.
Professional development starts with analysation of skill sets and academia of
a person. The kind of job or business one would like to settle down in and the set of
skills required to achieve the same will constitute the process of professional
development. A person seeking professional development may also be working in an
organization where he would be seeking promotion. Every person would like to do
well in his /her career and thus has to work on the requirements of the concerned
post one wants to get to. It may require the individual to hone his soft skills, improve
upon the art of public speaking, developing leadership skills, improving upon the
technical skills etc. Professional development has self motives as well as to gain
social status and recognition along with a sense of financial security (Howard, 2019).

achievable by individual, realistic in nature and which needs to be achieved within a
specific time zone which is in between years 1-5 where in certain cases this can not
be specific as it accounts to interval between long term goals and medium term
goals which creates state of confusion and unclear focus which leads to changes in
various goals(Torres,2019).
these are the goals which are being related with values of individual which
explains the reasons and understanding certain things about the individual why it is
being required and important to accomplish the same. It helps in defining how an
individual needs to work and what needs to be worked and improved upon which
depends on competency and skills to achieve the same. This are being termed as

of these types of goals is it help in taking control where decision and choices are
being derived from individual own towards how to accomplish the same. These
refers to the action plan to achieve long term goals which are being defined by the

provides significant time to account for progress and unlike long term goals does not
large time to achieve which changes individual with complete mindset which

will come in handy.

To conclude, it can be said that personal and
professional development is an ongoing process which
