Running Head- Diffusion, and Osmosis
Biology
Topic- Difference between Diffusion and Osmosis
Introduction
Diffusion and osmosis are studies related to the science of plant and animals. It is the study of
cells and its particles which comes under botanical studies. Botanical science is one of the major
branches of biology like zoology and others. Botany is a scientific and systematic study of
plants. In botanical studies, one will be able to understand the structure of plant cells and how it
works.
Diffusion and Osmosis Brief
Cells are living things and hence needs some required essential nutrient to stay alive for a longer
period of time. Cells also need to throughout the waste. There are mainly two methods which
allow a substance to move across the membrane of the cell. Most importantly, there are only two
types of transport/ movement that is active transport and passive transport. Passive transport does
not require energy to move the water and molecules whereas active transport requires the use of
energy in order to move the water and molecules. Passive and active transport are common as
diffusion and osmosis in the biological term. It is purely related to the study of plant and animals
which highlight the movement of water and molecules. In layman, language osmosis is a state or
a process where diffusion of water in a selective membrane happen from the region of more
dilute towards the high concentration region. Whereas diffusion is a state or process where
molecules tend to feast out evenly, from the region of high concentration towards the region of
low concentration.

today's scenario and hence a student can make their future bright and prosper in the coming days
in the botanical field. As we move to the present era we find that science and technology are at
the boom. In science botanical science is one of the most prominent and emerging fields.
Major Difference between Osmosis and Diffusion
Diffusion and osmosis define the process of water movement and water act as a solvent. In
diffusion both the molecules such as solvent as well as solute particles move freely from high
concentration area towards low concentration area. Whereas in osmosis only solvent molecules
move freely from low concentration area towards high concentration area. In simple, the word
only solvent molecules can cross the membrane in osmosis whereas both solvent, as well as
solute molecules, cross the membrane in diffusion. Moreover, we can say that osmosis is the
movement of water molecules towards membrane but in diffusion, there is no need of any
membrane as in diffusion molecules does not need any energy to move from the high
concentration area towards low concentration area. Most importantly both osmosis, as well as
diffusion, occurs in animals and plants. Osmosis is very crucial for the survival of an organism.
It is because of osmosis help in controlling the balance of water between the cell membrane and
its near surrounding. It is to highlight that osmosis and diffusion both happen when moisture is
available in both the cases. Diffusion and Osmosis is one of the emerging concepts of biology.
Nowadays it gains significant importance in the field of biology. Most importantly both the term
that is diffusion and osmosis is used to define and describe the movement of water from the cell
membrane. Moreover, in simple words diffusion as well as osmosis is always referred to as the
movement of water. However, diffusion is defined as a process of movement of water and
molecules from a high concentration area towards the low concentration area. Whereas Osmosis
is a process of water movement from a low concentration area towards the high concentration
area. Most importantly, osmosis, as well as diffusion, holds great importance in the field of
biology and botanical science.
Importance of osmosis and diffusion
Diffusion and osmosis play a vital role in making the human kidney, plant and animal alive and
functioning. The main importance of the diffusion is that diffusion is essential for almost all the
organism as diffusion supply and control vital substance to the body in a way to make the body

alive. Whereas the main importance of the osmosis is that keeps a balance between inside
environment and the outside environment. For instance, the balance between soils to the root
hairs of the plants. Hence, it can be notified that both, as well as diffusion, play a vital and
significant role in making the organism alive and effective. In some way manner both the process
help in balancing the water and environment and also help the cell membrane to work
effectively. If there is an absence of the osmosis and diffusion process then cell membrane lack
to have proper nutrients to stay alive and healthy. In simple language diffusion or dispersion is
basic for some life forms as it is a component of various procedures which control furthermore,
supply indispensable substances to the body altogether for essential survival. A couple of these
are talked about underneath. Gas trade is one of these procedures. It is when truly necessary
oxygen is gotten by the body with the end goal for breath to happen and the waste carbon dioxide
is removed from the body. In human that is warm-blooded creatures, the trade happens in the
lungs which contain countless alveoli. Whereas the importance and significance of osmosis are
to keep harmony between the outside and inside the condition. For instance, from the dirt to the
root hairs of the plant for the osmosis of water. The soil has more centralization of water in this
way it moves from soil to an area of low fixation that is a plant.
The main similarities of osmosis and diffusion are that both the process equalizes the
concentration of two solutions in an effective and efficient manner. Besides, this in regards of
functionality both the process is the same as their main function is to maintain the survival of the
cell membrane at large for the longer period of time.
Major Function of osmosis and diffusion
The main function of Osmosis - The main function of the osmosis is, it helps in removing the
impurities from the feed water and also help in supplying pure water through the semi-permeable
membrane in an effective manner. In osmosis, particles do not move continuously, and particles
need the energy to move in order to maintain the life of the cell membrane.
The main function of diffusion- The core function of the diffusion is, it helps in removing the
waste and supplying essential nutrient to the cell membrane in an effective and efficient manner.
In diffusion, particles are moving always in order to maintain the life of the cell membrane. In
the process of diffusion, particles move freely and they do not need any energy to move.

However, to conclude the motion we can say that osmosis and diffusion play a major function in
maintaining the life of the cell, by supplying the essential nutrient to the cell membrane and
removing the wastage from the inner side. Moreover, another function is to maintain the outside
temperature and inside temperature equal. Hence, both are function are important for the survival
of the cell in an effective and efficient manner.
Types of osmosis and example of osmosis and diffusion
Basically, there are three types of osmosis. The three basic types of osmosis are a hypertonic,
isotonic and hypotonic state. Moreover, two main types of diffusion are passive and active
diffusion or facilitated diffusion.
Isotonic osmosis - A cell in an isotonic arrangement is in balance with its environment, which
means the solute fixations inside and outside are the equivalent. In this state, there is no fixation
slope and consequently, no enormous development of water in or out. Water particles do
uninhibitedly move all through the cell, be that as it may, and the rate of development is the
equivalent in the two headings.
Hypotonic osmosis - A hypotonic arrangement has a lower solute focus than inside the cell (the
prefix hypo is Latin for under or beneath). The distinction in fixation between the compartments
makes water enter the cell. Plant cells can endure this circumstance superior to creature cells.
Hypertonic osmosis - In Latin, the prefix hyper implies over or above. Hypertonic arrangements
have a higher solute focus than inside the cell. This makes water surge out making the cell
wrinkle or shrink. This is unmistakably found in red platelets experiencing a procedure called
creation. Plant cells in a hypertonic arrangement can resemble a pincushion in view of what's
happening inside.
Passive diffusion- passive diffusion or uninvolved dispersion is the movement of particles over
a semi-porous film without the assistance and involvement of protein channels.
Facilitated diffusion- Facilitated diffusion or encouraged dispersion is the progression of
particles down a focus slope, over a film, however, requires the assistance of a protein for the
effective movement. There are two classifications of proteins that help encouraged dispersion:
transporter proteins and channel proteins

Example of diffusion- One of the best examples of diffusion is carbon dioxide enter the stomata
of leaves in plants. From Lenticels and stomata of leaves oxygen is diffusing out is another
example of the diffusion process.
Example of osmosis- One of the prominent examples of the osmosis process is the absorption of
water by the plant roots. Reabsorption of water molecules by distal and proximal convoluted
tubules of the nephron.
Conclusion
On the basis of the above analysis and discussion, we can say that osmosis and diffusion are the
part of botany studies in which study related to the plant and animal cells are carried out.
Diffusion is the process of movement of chemical from one place to another place whereas
osmosis is purely related to the movement of water across a cell membrane. In simple language,
we can say that movement of water molecules from the region of high concentration towards to
region of low concentration is termed as osmosis process. Whereas, movement of solids, liquids,
and gases from the region of high concentration towards the region of lower region is termed a
process of diffusion. In osmosis, movement is through the semi-permeable membrane whereas in
diffusion movement is free and do not require any semi-permeable membrane. In simple
language, we can conclude that osmosis undertakes liquid substance only, whereas the diffusion
process undertakes any substance such as liquid, gases or even solids.
In general term, we can say that exchange and movement of water and molecules mainly happen
to maintain the equilibrium in the plant cell and body. Although this term is somewhat confusing
it has value in the field of science.
