Automation of technologies is a reality in the twenty first century. The society has always
progressed in terms of science and technology till date and therefore, it has created a
plethora of opportunities for every sections of the society. However, the question lies that
weather the marginalized sections of the society, such as the working class and the
women might be benefitted by the automation of the technologies or not. The researches
say that since women have been caged into the four walls of home, where they have been
bestowed with all kinds of unproductive domestic chores, the automation of technologies,
such as automatic washing machines and microwave ovens would lead them to lessen
their work burden and concentrate more on the outside work, such as economic activities
and educational activities that might bring financial incentives for them. However, certain
researches suggest that it might actually lead to worsen the situation as women would
tend to become obese with the lack of physical labor that they give due to technological
automation (Webster, 2014).
Can you think of some ways that giving over decision-making to robots and algorithms
might have consequences for society? What about for work and workplaces?
The decision making robots and algorithms might prove to be both positive and negative
for the society. Robots have proved to be the inevitable outcome automation and
development of the technologies. However, decision making robots might prove harmful
in certain sensitive areas where decision making is not always applicable, such as in
medical ethics. However, decision making robots with artificial intelligence put in them

have been a boon to the society for its highly optimized work and services (Lutze and
Waldhör, 2015).
Can you think of a technology that you use for personal purposes and how it might (like a
smart watch) have negative consequences for your health?
Technological gadgets such as smart watches can be harmful for us. Frequencies
(Bluetooth or WiFi) used by smartwatches might not cause physical damage to an
individual’s health, but it can interfere with the integrity of his or her data. On the other
hand, research also suggests that smartwatches give off harmful radiations, most likely,
the radioactive radiations that are not safe for the health of an individual. Therefore, such
gadgets should be highly avoided (Lin, Abney and Bekey, 2014).
