Introduction
This assessment report aims at developing skills and knowledge about various tools and
techniques which are used to support the sourcing, creation, development, and processing of
digital images. The practical work to be carried out, while understanding the digital imaging
processes, will be described in this report in detail including relative evidence of the work
done.

LO1 Be able to create digital images for specific purposes
AC1.1 Identify sources for digital images
Digital Imaging
It can be called as the electronic capturing and displaying of a photo or image. Usually, the
tool needed for this a digital camera and a computer in order to process such images. Images,
as known to most, can be generally divided into coloured and B&W (Black and White).
Further, the coloured images can have one of the two colouring formats: CMYK or RGB.
And the sources defined for digital images is not just the digital camera, but images already
being captured and stored by someone else can also be used. And based on this the sources of
images are categorised into primary, secondary and sometimes two more categories:
Sampling, and recording. The categories are explained below.
Primary Source
Primary sources are those sources from which original and authentic information, here,
images, are taken from. They provide a first-hand detailing of events, condition, or actions.
These are images created of captured by first recorders or witnesses of any event. However,
the most useful of such resources are those who were captured or created most recently to the
time one is searching for. A few examples of primary sources for digital images are Digital
and video cameras, CDs, DVDs etc.
Secondary Sources
These are those images which are not original but are an art work of someone else from
whom they are taken legally (suggested). They sometimes are a comment, discussion or
modification of existing primary sources, and hence are termed as secondary, meaning
derived after or on primary category. They usually lack the immediacy and freshness of some
original image. A few examples of secondary sources for digital images are Magazines,
Internet etc.
Sampling
Sampling is a process for digitalisation of analogue images. The analog image function F (x,
y) is needed to be digitalised in amplitude and spatially, both. And for that, a digitizer or
frame grabber is used in order to sample the analog video signal. The digitized image’s

spatial resolution is determined by the rate of sampling and the magnitude of the image is
detailed by a digital value for image processing (Anbarjafari, 2019).
Recording
It is one method to record light radiations with the use of devices (e.g., sensors). The device
is set to a desired luminous intensity, converts this intensity into an electrical charge, and
loads it as the voltage signal, and being photosensitive. These sensors are capable of so. Such
a device used for the purpose of recording digital images takes images in different forms and
couples them to create a panoramic picture through some software for image processing.
Examples of such devices are: Charged Couple Device (CCD sensor), Complementary
Metallic Oxide Semiconductors (CMOS sensor) etc.
The various sources for digital images –
Primary Sources –
Digital Cameras – is the most basic source device to for digital images. It captures
digital images and saves them in JPG format.
Figure 1: Digital Camera
Video Cameras – are same as digital cameras. They capture digital videos and the
videos can be paused and that paused frame can be used as an image.

Figure 2: Video camera
Mobile phones – too can be used as a source for digital images. They are equipped
with high-quality cameras nowadays and usually save the image in JPG format.
Figure 3: Mobile Phone's Camera
Artwork, Posters – are the original pieces of work from artists or designers. They are
hence counted in primary category of sources.

Drives, CDs, DVDs – can also be a primary source for digital images. The original
files captured in devices are stored in drives, CDs etc. and they can be put into any
relevant work.

Secondary Sources -
Still, from videos – Videos captured by someone when are used to take snapshots by
someone else, they are called as a secondary source for that shot or image.

Images from magazines – images can be captured from magazines either by capturing
directly from a digital camera or by cutting it first and then capturing.
