Development of Digital Library: Subjects, Approaches and Sources

This report provides an overview of the development of a digital library. It defines key subjects such as metadata standards, funding, the role of libraries, partnerships, user-generated content, open access, digital rights management, and mobile DL use. The report details the importance of metadata, the role of funding, and the need for partnerships. It also addresses challenges like copyright issues and user-generated content management. The project adopted an Agile methodology, starting with a blueprint and followed by the creation of sections, categorization, and material selection by experts. Testing of the digital library, including the search dialogue box, was successfully completed. Description of the subjects
Format and standards of Metadata – Metadata is often considered as the data of data. It is
an overview of the data presented in a particular format and maintaining some standards.
With the help of this metadata one gets ensured about how to use the data and what will be
the correct point of application. Ina digital library the common standard that is adapted as a
standard of metadata is METS or Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard. This
standard of metadata is used for its provision of an encoding technique of the metadata which
is necessary for managing the objects of a digital library within the storage as well as in
between storages where there is an exchange of such objects.
Funding – Funding for any project plays an important role in the development of the project.
In case there is a lack of funding, the project suffers from lack of resources as well as the

work force that is required for the purpose. Besides, additional activities like promotion of the
service gets interrupted and proper maintenance in the project is one of the basic issues.
The role of libraries – It is well known that how libraries have been serving not only the
purpose of education but also a library is a source pf immense knowledge almost about every
possible field for ages. Starting from the early period to this post-modern era, libraries played
an important role in the advancement of the human society.
Partnerships – Partnerships also play an important role in the development of any project. In
this case, although a digital library is a source of knowledge in electronic form, but some may
think it is a source of business in exchange of knowledge. Hence, having partnerships like
that often cause misunderstandings with the motives of the individual behind the project.
User generated content – In a digital library, although all of the content will be from the
developer’s end, still there will be a scope of user-generated content. Feedbacks on several
journals would be necessary to know the response from the users. Hence, user-generated data
will exist in such digital libraries. These data also need to be stored as well as managed
properly.
Open access – Open access gives a free movement for the users to browse through almost
whatever they desire and what is available. Although for the journals the credits will be given
to the actual authors, but there will be a scope of violation of the copyright issues. People can
copy these works and can claim that work to be theirs entirely. Proper attention have to be put
in these areas too.
Digital rights management – An important responsibility is maintaining the digital rights. In
the digital world, anyone can claim one’s work to be theirs. However there have to be a
management system who will check the authenticity of the claim and will decide for the
deserved one.

Mobile DL use – In the modern technological world, where a smartphone plays almost all of
the necessary technical roles in a human being’s daily chores needs to be accommodated in
the usage of the digital libraries. Mobile application has to be there where an individual can
access to the library whenever and wherever he/she needs.

The sources that has been referred for the collection of the digital library are as follows:
1. Google Scholar
2. Charles Sturt University
3. IEEE scholar, Science.gov
4. Scirus, and, much more.
All of these platforms are referred for the collection of papers, books and journals on various
topics of Information Technology for the proposed digital library.
Approaches
The making of this digital library became possible for organised approaches made by the
team. For the project an Agile methodology was adapted so that any issues if generates, then
can be sorted out without undergoing an entire change in the model. In the first place the blue
print for the digital library was made, where all of the necessary stages and phases were
identified. Sources that could be referred for the collection of the requirements of the library
are sorted. Thereafter, according to the blueprint the library was created and the sections and
subsections were made, which was categorised in the blueprint. The categorisation according
to the topics of Information technology were sorted and number of possible sources were
estimated. The estimated volume of the library was listed. For the selection of the appropriate
material for particular topics, experts were assigned who reviewed all of the selected articles
and enlisted them into the collection. Finally, after the first phase of selection was done, the

testing of the digital library was attempted along with search dialogue box, which appeared to
be successful.
