2THE RISE OF DIGITAL AGE
1. Introduction
In the recent times, there has been a huge rise in the modern age technologies. There have
been numerous form of inventions within the technological sector. Various high form of devices
have been introduced with the massive need to implement serious kinds of implications within
the technologies. The rise of various forms of computing devices such as computers, mobiles and
other kinds of electronic devices would be very much necessary for the improvements in the
digital age (Baym 2015).
2. Discussion
2.1 The Pre-Gutenberg World
In the past times, there was a period when printing press was not yet invented. At such
times, the processing of vast amount of information was performed in a monotonous manner. In
the previous times, the books were mainly hand-written. The paper in which people used to write
books were made on specially designed surfaces such as wax, clay, parchment and papyrus. In
this period, the hand written books were mainly restricted to only those people who had the right
form of affordability. These were only afforded by elite group of people. The primary
information that was to be relayed to different people was transferred mainly over word-of-
mouth channels (Sligo 2015).
2.2 The Post-Gutenberg World
This era is mainly described as the time in which there have been a major of emergence
within the rise of digital form of technologies. With the high form of technologies there had been
a major rise of various kinds of digital based technologies that would include the rise of the
internet technologies and the worldwide web. The rise of internet technologies had made the way

for the ease of people to upload vital files on the internet platform, which could be easily
downloaded from the internet based on their needs. The forms of media would also include
various kinds of images, text and video files (Pettitt 2013).
2.3 Computers
The latest form of inventions within the digital age was the invention of computers. The
computer was invented by Charles Babbage who is also known as the “father of modern age
computers”. These form of computational devices was mainly introduced for the purpose of
simplifying the various kinds of mathematical calculations and computations. The invention was
highly necessary for simplifying the capabilities of making of decisions. The previous computers
were extremely large-sized that would be able to compute faster than the brain of humans. With
the growth of the computer networks, there was a huge form of access to personal computers to
different users (Mirjalili, Jangir and Saremi 2017).
2.4 Internet Technology
The rise of computers had also led to the rise of another important technological aspect,
which is known as Internet. The Internet technology was firstly developed in California, United
States in the late years of 1960s. This technology was hugely needed in order to communicate
with a wide number of users. In the early launch of this kind of technology, there was a major
form of problem that had risen in relation with the speed of browsing within the internet
platform. There was a massive need for introducing higher capacity of processors such as i5 and
i7, which was highly needed for supporting these technologies (Hutchby 2013).
2.5 World Wide Web
The rise of internet technology also led to the discovery of the World Wide Web (www),
which was primarily discovered by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. In the initial phases of the development

of the ‘www’ platform, this technology was mainly limited within commercial purposes. The
home pages were mostly designed by various companies and owners of businesses in order to
promote and sell their products. It also made the ease to purchase several products on the online
platform (Hutchby 2013). The ease of shopping was made within the reach of the common
people. Hence the business owners were able to earn money based on online transactions. The
extended support by the internet made the access to information available on the social media
platform.
2.6 Electronic Mail (E-mail)
With the rise of the internet platform, the communication based on transferring
information or letters from one organization to another was made to easier with the help of
electronic mail systems. This had greatly helped for transferring vital business related
information (Kiesler 2014). This technology within the electronic mail includes the exchange of
messages that are stored within computers. The messages that are communicated by the help of
e-mail are mostly encoded within ASCII text.
3. Conclusion
Based on the above discussion from the above report, it could be concluded that the rise
of digital age has been a major boon for the various users. The impact of such kind of digital
based platforms and computing devices was largely required for the ease of communicating and
transferring of vital forms of information and also improve the various processes of business.
