FLOODING 2
My community being along the lake region is prone flooding. This natural disaster does
not always happen annually but only when there is excess rainfall on the highland feeding the
lake with water. We therefore depend much on the weather forecasting department so that we are
prepared whenever heavy rains are to fall. This does not mean that we wait until there are news
of heavy rains so that we are prepared for this disaster but we are always on the lookout.
However, flooding has not happened for over sometime now.
There are different triage measures taken in case this disaster strikes. First of all, a team
goes around the area to rescue anyone who was affected. In case of any deaths (only one in
history), the bodies are recovered. Some people are relocated to higher regions. Casualties are
supplied with mosquito nets and some clean water. A medical team is send to the region to care
for those with special medical needs including children, the expectant mothers and the aged.
However the health care team faces some challenges to reach the community. Most roads in the
community are impassable during this period posing a challenge in transport. It is difficult also to
reach those relocated to higher regions.
Sometime ago, when we were on break from school, I experienced this disaster.
Everywhere was covered with water. For those living closer to the lake and rivers, there houses
and property were carried away. As it was not for the quick response of the disaster team and
help from the community members, many would have lost their lives.
