INTRODUCTION
Prejudice and discrimination have been considered as most common issues throughout
human history. People are inflexible and have irrational attitudes towards others. Society or
community gives more preferences to their local people and behave rude or bias with the persons
those who belong from other nation or region (Simpson and Yinger, 2013). Community
members do not like when government provides support to these asylum seekers. They said that
these resources needs to be used for welfare of local population rather than others. Current
assignment will discuss prejudice and discrimination on the ground of race, gender, age,
disability. Furthermore, it will explain legislative response on these matters. In addition, range
of community initiatives in order to empower specific group of people will be illustrated in this
essay (Schmitt and et.al, 2014).
MAIN BODY
Discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, age and disability (332)
It is fact that people treat unfairly to other community people that is kind of
discrimination. There are many aspects on the ground of which people get discriminated by
others such as age, gender, race, religion, disability etc. Government has allotted resources for
those people so that they can stay in the other country easily and can survive here without any
trouble. Many legislation have been made by UK government in this respect so that people can
get to know about their rights (Kite and Whitley Jr, 2016). When any asylum seeker come to
other location and apply for the job or in other case if person belong from other nation and work
in the office then people treat them unfairly. Most of time that individual do not get promotional
opportunities in the employment. This is discrimination on the ground of nationality. Apart from
this, people get discriminated on the bases of race as well. It is called direct discrimination where
they do not get job opportunities in other nations and society members have negative attitude
towards them (Bodenhausen, Macrae and Sherman, 2016).
Gender is most common base on which people discriminate others. There are many
places where girls are getting that much freedom that boys have. Even they have no rights to
complete their education as well, that is why they are engaged in household work only. It is the
situation of most of the rural areas in the UK (Znamenskiy and Zador, 2013). Apart from this
there are many employers those who do not give employment or promotion opportunities to girls

because they think that men can do far better work as compare to women. Such type of
discrimination decrease confident of ladies and they become to build their career.
Direct discrimination takes place when one person treat unfairly to other on the ground of
age. It is the perception of society members that young people are unable to do better and people
those who are above 40 have great knowledge (Stubbs and Stubbs, 2016). Thus, they can
perform better. So when young people get some opportunity then they react negative with them.
Such people do not get help from the community members.
Legislative response to discrimination
Discrimination and Prejudice are most common issues in the UK and many more
countries. Government is continuously trying to resolve this problem and creating equality in the
country. Legislation that are made in order to give response to discrimination are as following:
Equality Act 2010: Government of UK has made legislation in order to reduce
discrimination from the society and creating equality among all (Hittner, Thomas and Adam,
2016). Main purpose of Lovell community centre is to fulfil needs of people and provide them
wide range of support so that they can stay in the location without any trouble. This act came
into existence in October 2010. It was made with the aim to protect the population from getting
discriminated in the workplace and in wider social environment. It protects people from direct
and indirect type of biasses such as harassment, victimisation etc. It gives rights to the people in
individual is getting unfair treatment due to its age, race, age or disability (Ding and Wright,
2017). This anti-discrimination law has helped in reducing cases of such type of pre justice in the
nation.
Race Relation act 1965: It was made by the UK government in order to address racial
discrimination. If any person is getting unfair behaviour on the bases of colour, race etc. then
individual has rights to complain against unfair practices. This act has helped in improving the
condition of asylum seeker and developing fair environment for them (DeLong and et.al, 2017).
Sex discrimination act 1975: It is one of the major legislation that has been made in the
year 1975 in order to reduce unfair practices or behaviour of people for different genders. Most
of the times female were not getting equal opportunities that decrease their confidence and make
them feel that they are not able to perform well. Most of the time in the working environment
they do not get promotion opportunities. Even in the society as well, community members do not
treat girls equal as compare to men. To eliminate such type of discrimination from the society

government has made Sex discrimination act 1975 so that people can live without bias (National
Anti-Racism Strategy and Racism. It Stops with Me Campaign, 2015).
Disability discrimination act 1995: Main aim of government is to provide equal rights to
disable persons and provide them such environment where they can get equal respect as normal
people are getting. It was amended in the year 1999 and 2005. This has helped in minimizing
discrimination on the bases of disability and all disable person got equal chance to grow well in
the society (Working together to combat racism and religious discrimination, 2017).
Community initiatives to empower specific groups
It is very important to empower these groups so that they asylum seekers can fulfil their
needs and can live in other country without any discrimination. Women Powered initiative was
he most successful imitative of community. It is the global efforts that was taken in order to
promote women and giving them equal rights as men. In this, initiatives social workers and
related authorities conduct regular meetings so that they can provide platform to girls and can
provide them social support (Eliminating Racial Discrimination; Ensuring Right to Self-
Determination; Protecting Refugees Issues Addressed, as Third Committee Continues Human
Rights Debate, 2017). It helps in minimizing gender discrimination from the society.
Racism is the serious issue that creates negative impact on the people. Many social
workers have taken strong initiative to make people aware that race does not matter. If the person
is having ability to live better and perform better than it would be wrong to behave with them
negatively. Education on race, religion is started in the school level so that thinking of students
can be developed and they can treat other community people well. It is the duty of the local
members that if any person is coming from other country or religion then treat them well. School
education on religion and anti discrimination has supported in improving the condition of the
society. Now people are getting right treatment in the workplace environment and in educational
institutes. Still there are some people those who are discriminating them but such type of
initiatives can help in minimizing such type of issues from the society (DeLong and et.al, 2017).
Many social workers have taken initiatives and people those who belong to other nation
and require help, they are getting living, food facility by the trusts or NGOs. That has helped in
making them feel comfortable and increasing their confident. By this way people those who need
support are getting proper assistance by the community members (Hittner, Thomas and Adam,
2016).

RECOMMENDATIONS
There are many places where discrimination cases are occurring frequently. In order to
provide them proper resources and advocacy services it is required to make some changes in
existing policies and legislations. Equality act is protecting the people but government should
make it more strict so that such type of injustices cases can be resolved. Authorities should start
educating peop le by organizing capms in the society. It will help in knowing their rights and
they will be able to raise their voice against discrimination. By this way such type of cases will
be minimized. If any person is getting discriminated on the bases of race, age, religion, disability
etc. then punishment should be hard so that no other person get involved in such type of
prejudice activities.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it can be articulated that discrimination is the major problem in the
society that is why asylum seeker do not get benefit of government resources on time. People
with conservative thinking insult them and behave negative with them. It decreases confidence of
discriminated person and create negative image in the mind of individual. Equality act, race
relation act etc. have been made in order to reduce such type of cases from the society. But still it
is required to make necessary modification in the law so that they can be m,ore effective and can
minimize discrimination from the society.
