Article 1:
Psychiatric Consultation in the Nursing Home: A Survey of Six States
The first article to be reviewed in this paper is by Reichman et al. (1998), discussing
the nature of psychiatric consultation in the nursing homes and how effective the results are
to provide symptomatic relief. This survey study compared the data of six states, namely New
York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, Louisiana, and Florida, with the total sample
size being 2635 nursing directors. The survey has examined availability, features, and
supposed effectiveness of psychiatric consultation provided in the nursing homes. One of the
greatest strengths of the study had been the huge sampling, involving the data from six states,
which enhanced the chance of the confidence interval and smaller effect size. On the other
hand, the notable limitation of the study is the non-random sampling or non-probability
sampling, which limits the generalizability and transferability of the data findings. The data
findings indicated the fact that 38% of the nursing homes need psychiatric evaluation, and
rest reported that psychiatrics provided diagnostic and pharmacological recommendations,
but limited or inadequate non-pharmacological interventions. Hence, the practice change
prompted by this study is the fact that there is need for improvement in the psychological
consultation provided in the nursing homes.
Article 2:
NURSING HOME THEFT: The Hidden Problem
The second article being reviewed is by Harris and Benson (1998), on the purpose of
theft in nursing homes, a grave hidden problem existing in the hospice care scenario. The
article focuses on a huge and imperative issue in the hospice care, the stealing of personal
possessions of the patients while in the health care facility. The notable strength of the article
has to be the use of both open and close ended questionnaires, along with the total sampling
of 975. The large sample size and open and close ended questionnaire helps in enhancing the
richness of the data being included in the study. The limitation includes the self-reporting of
the data which includes high chance of bias incorporated, affecting the authenticity of the
data findings. Although, it has to be mentioned that age, sex and race had been the self-
reported theft predictors, along with job dissatisfaction, approving attitudes toward theft, and
negative attitudes toward patients. Hence, the practice change prompted by this paper is
training and counselling of the staff can help in overcoming such issues.
Article 3:
Structure vs. people in primary nursing: an inquiry.
The next article is by Shukla (1981), comparing the effectiveness of structure and
capability of nursing staff in improving the primary nursing care quality over team nursing. A
novel concept ion the nursing and care delivery scenario, which compared the effectiveness
of an all-RN model of primary nursing care with a team nursing care system. The strength of
the article can be the fact that they centralized to nursing units rather than patient rooms. All
previous studies on this have decentralized nursing support systems, whereas there is
considerable association between nursing support systems and competency. There is no clear
mentioning of the limitations of the study, although it can be stated that small sampling can
be a notable limitation. The practice change prompted includes the fact that facilities must
evaluate the competencies of the nurses before introducing or adapting to the primary care
concept.
Article 4:
Operation concern: A study of senior nursing students in three nursing programs.
The next article is by Meleis and Farrell (1974), discussing the difference between

three of the notable nursing degrees, such as baccalaureate, one associate degree and two
diplomas in nursing. The notable strength in this case is the detailed data extraction and
analysis by incorporating all with satisfactory achievement scale, which enhances the
systematic efficacy and implication of the data findings. The limitation mentioned includes
lack of data on validity and reliability of the tools and instruments used in the study. The
implication of the study that prompts a practice change is baccalaureate degrees and associate
degrees must direct attention jointly to developing the curriculum with differentiated
objectives without lacking necessary articulation.
Article 5:
Humor as a nursing intervention
This article by Hunt (1993) discusses the impact of humor as a nursing intervention, a
novel and very important initiative for primary care scenario, especially for pediatric setting.
The article described and evaluated the use of humor as a nursing intervention, along with
differentiation between humor and laughter. The strength of the article is the differentiation
illustrated and followed in the article. The limitation is the inclusion of just 6 research articles
for the study, which in turn limits the authenticity and validity of the data. The implication of
the data findings is the fact that humor is an effective intervention, and there should be
integration of humor as a notable intervention technique in nursing care scenario, especially
as a non- pharmacological technique of pain management.
Article 6:
The effects of PBL (Problem-Based Learning) on the metacognition, critical thinking,
and problem solving process of nursing students.
The last article to be reviewed by Choi (2004), discussing the effect of problem based
learning on three core competences of nursing students, meta-cognition, problem solving
process, critical thinking. The authors chose a pre-post-test including a nonequivalent control
group design, with each skill measured critically and separately. The strength of the article is
the incorporation of three competences and triangulation data to deliver an integrated verdict
on the research question. Considering the limitation of the research study, the sample size for
the study selected by the authors had been only 76 nursing students. The sample size is
undoubtedly very small, which in turn limits the authenticity and validity of the research data
findings. The novel information which prompts a change in the nursing practice scenario
includes the positive effect of PBL based learning on the nursing students and their practical
skill enhancement. Hence, there is need for incorporation of the PBL based learning
techniques into nursing education curriculum for nurses so that they can be appropriately
trained for crisis based situations.
