Dissertation Topic: Growth of Sainsbury’s Supermarket: An Analysis of its Business
Model and the Marketing Strategies
Explanation: Sainsbury’s is one of the largest supermarket chains in UK that has been
around in business for 150 years. In 1869, the company was first set up by John James Sainsbury
as a single grocery shop that continued to grow extensively over the century and spread
throughout UK to become one of the largest supermarket chains in the country. Starting from a
mere grocery shop, the company now earns revenue of more than £28 billion and also boasts a
separate Sainsbury’s Bank in addition to the supermarket chain. The growth of the company
throughout the years and its survival in today’s market that is dominated by online shopping are
both fascinating and can be interesting topics for research. Since, no previous research activities
have been conducted on the company, a new research can be initiated that can be focused on the
business model and marketing strategies that have been responsible for the success and growth of
Sainsbury’s. This research has the potential to provide the researcher with sufficient knowledge
and insight of a successful business management plan as well as business model that is effective
in helping the growth of the company instead of extreme market competition and other factors.
Hence, this topic has been chosen for this particular research.
