Education System for the Disabled
Disability can be referred as a continued health condition of some
people that act as hindrances for the everyday activities to the same.
A person can be referred to differently abled, if,
• An affected physical condition that is permanent or likely to be
permanent.
• The physical condition is chronic or episodic.
• The physical condition is attributed to the physical impairment, or
intellectual or psychiatric or neurological or cognitive impairment.
• The physical condition is being a hindrance in his or her
communication or mobility or any other social activities.

Origin of the issue:
Alexander Grahambell-
The concept for a special school for the special children or the
differently abled children came into being with Alexander Grahambell, in the
1800s. He was the first ever person to understand that since the differently
abled children are special, therefore, there should be different schools to
educate them.
Commercialising of the Special Schools-
The concept of Special School became popular, globally, and the need
of the same was understood, in as late as 1970s, when the special children
were ensured by their human rights. It was understood that the children need
special care and attention to get involved in the education process.

Impact of the Issue
Impacts on the Special Children-
• Almost in all parts of the world the Special Education Needs (SEN) Programme is included.
• The Programmes is aiming to point out the differences and the different needs of each of the pupil,
and therefore, planning ford the educational programmes according to that.
• The basic agenda is to empower the differently abled children and to involve them into the daily
course of life, so that they do not feel abandoned.
• The basic rights and the human rights of the children will also be preserved.
• Important Information Regarding the Special Children-
• The children are differently abled, have physical impairments, which is responsible for their
different behaviour.
• The special children must be respected and should be communicated empathetically.
• The neurological impairments or the physical impairments are the areas that make them special.
• They can claim their basic and human rights, therefore, they must be treated with equality and
equity.

Impacts on the Issue
Impact on Myself:
While reviewing the educational needs of the special children, the learning
process gave me a sound perspective regarding the concept and definition of the term
disabled, or different abled or physically challenged and mentally challenged.
Previously I had aver little understanding of the concept. The learning also made me
realise that they are not incapable of anything, it is just that they need more effort in
cognising something and therefore, it is our duty and responsibility to provide them
with the needed time and care and attention. It is pour duty to empower them.
Impact on My Profession:
Since I am a sociologist and is presently working in the child care and child
health system. Therefore, while working on the children, I also came across the
differently abled children, and it is then that I understood and gained a clear
perspective of the types and needs of the special children and also gained a
perspective regarding the legal attributes related to the special children.

Next big topic in my profession:
I am currently working with a non- governmental organization, in
the child care and child health division, and for this, the understanding
of the concepts, types and needs of these children are much important
for me. Also, it gave me a perspective of how these children can be
made to do innovative tasks. As we are trying to understand the ways to
empower the students and also to understand their strong points so that
those areas can be explored, strengthened and used.

• Understanding Diversity and Disability concept, better our understanding of the same.
• It increases the awareness regarding the disable people and therefore, helps the people to
improve their behavior.
• It ensure a sense of respect and empathy towards the special children.

In my profession I am to deal with the special children almost on a daily basis
therefore, the understanding has helped me in the following points,

• Understanding the appropriate educational structure that can be followed to reach them.

difficulty and also to ensure a trust based relationship with them.

• Care based observation to understand the behavioural aspects of the
students.
• Focusing on the areas of strength and therefore, including innovation.
• Changing the behavioural structure while communicating with theme.
