Equality and diversity can be referred as promoting equality of opportunity for all, by
diversity, providing each individual an opportunity to accomplish their potential, free from
discrimination and prejudice. Providing equal opportunity to all relates to understanding that
individuals are treated as individuals without judgements made on the basis of stereotypes.
Maintaining equality in diversity in workplace is very crucial and there are some ways through
which management of an organisation can promote equality and diversity in workplace.
1. Developing an inclusive culture and the culture of fairness: It is one among the way
that help in promoting equality and diversity in workplace. The management style and
language use by managers must reflect the commitment of inclusion. An open
communication policy in the organisation can encourage the workforce to ascertain
issues, make appropriate suggestions for improvements and receive feedback.
2. Creating mentorship program: Having diverse workforce is crucial, but mentorship
program is very important element of workplace diversity program in order to ensure that
everyone has opportunity for advancement. By supporting professional development
opportunities through contributing to continuing education of employees.
3. Awareness regarding indirect discrimination: It occurs when there is policy which
applies in similar way for every individual but disadvantages of group of individuals who
share a protected characteristics and a person is a part of disadvantage group. The indirect
discrimination can occur on the basis of age, disability, race, sex, religion, gender
reassignment, sexual orientation etc.
4. Communicate clearly and develop employee led task forces: clear communication as
well as follow through is very necessary in order to ensure that initiatives effective. The
policies of the organisation must reflect the unique needs of individuals in the company.
Apart from this, employees must feel comfortable coming to the administrators with any
concerns regarding how they treat others in company because of their age, ethnicity,
gender or other factors.
