CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION
Background to the study:
Diversity means having unlink or distinct elements. Within a workplace, meaning of
diversity is employing different people who have diverse background. In addition, diversity is a
workforce consisting of a wide mix of employees from different ethnic and racial background of
different genders and ages, and of various national and domestic cultures (de Aquino and
Robertson, 2018). There are number of benefits for having diverse workforce at workplace such
as higher employee engagement, better company reputation, reduced employee turnover,
improved hiring results, increased profits, variety of different perspectives, faster problem
solving etc. These are consider main benefits of diversity that helps an enterprise in development
of its growth. In ASDA, employee turnover is a main problem that has negative impact on their
overall growth and success. In order to reduce such type of problem, company decide to promote
diversity at their workplace. As it helps an enterprise by overcoming this type of issue and
increasing number of diverse employees.
Research Aim
Main aim of this research is “To identify the role of diversity in reducing employee
turnover within an organisation. A study on ASDA.
Research Objectives
To develop basic understanding about the diversity at workplace.
To identify the benefits of diversity in the workplace of ASDA.
To analyse challenges of diversity at workplace of ASDA.
Statement of the issue
High employee turnover is a major issue the impact on overall success and growth of
ASDA. It is a loss of talent within workplace in over the time period. High employee turnover at
workplace is major issue because it reduce performance level of enterprise. Along with this,
diversity is becoming a more important factor in retaining employees for longer time. Retention

of employee is crucial and important to running a successful business. Diversity at workplace is
important for an organisation in retaining employees for long time (Gordon, 2018).
Importance of the study:
Main purpose for performing this research is to analyse the contribution of diversity in
reducing employee turnover. It is a biggest reasons that helps researcher in increasing of its
knowledge regarding the diversity and its role in reducing of high employee turnover.
Additionally, with the assist of this project, researcher is more able to get various scholars or
publishers view about managing diversity within an organisation which help investigator to
provide appropriate thought to industry with a purpose of rising whole performance and growth
in an amended way.
Gap in literature review
Main gap within a project is the role of diversity in reducing employee turnover within an
organisation. In previous studies, there were data available about the role of diversity but there
were missing or insufficient information about the importance of diversity in retention of
employees at workplace. In order to fulfil this missing information, research questions will be
applied by researcher in literature review section. As this support in attainment of research aim
and objectives successfully.

CHAPTER 2- LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature review is the process of collecting in-depth information from number of
sources such as magazines, books, articles etc. Different number of authors provide their view
point about the topic which turn to help investigator in collection of detailed information. Main
objective of this section is to identify gaps in previous study (Sakdiyakorn and
Wattanacharoensil, 2018).
Understanding of diversity at workplace
As per the view point of Riccucci, (2018), The term diversity means unique elements
which are different or unlike in nature. This can widely be expressed as the persons who are
having distinct characteristics and are opposite from each other. Various elements are there
which creates diversity and they are regionalism, population and government. Diversity in
workplace involves those different forms of individuals in a company. It also includes those
people who are dynamic in nature and explains about how people observe them. This concept
encloses gender, ethics, mental and physical conditions. There is various importance of having
diversity in workplace for an organisation. It gives a company an opportunity to promote new
ideas as there are variety of employees and different point of views. This also helps a company to
get better understanding of targets and achieving them with smoothness and fairly. Also loops
hole can have sorted much faster which enhances growth of an organisation. Improvement of
culture and quality of employees are produced. Increases interaction with customers and also
their satisfaction as they get better product information. Work environment also becomes
competitive in healthy manner. Management plays an important role in workplace diversity by
creating challenges for Human Resource professionals which creates a diverse environment by
promoting zero tolerance, open communication and management of conflicts in an organisation.
Tips for managing is prioritize communication, treating employee as an individual considering
their diverse nature, encouraging employees to work upon different projects to increase their
potential and enhancement of their skills. The aspect of diversity simultaneously having the large
number of negative impacts too over an organisation. It is not easy to handle the organisation
with diverse nature of employees. This is so because they all have different values and beliefs
that impacts their working approaches and leads the conditions of confusion and conflict. So, it
id advisory to management that they focus over the adoption of the effective practice that will

bring uniformity at workplace and help to bring coordination in the working approaches. This
will help to get the support of all employees equally towards attainment of organisational
objective.
Benefits of having diversity in workplace
According to the Cui and et. al., (2018), There are various benefits of having diversity in
workplace. As a starter organisation who is required to create a variety of work force and are
having lot of applications and has to select employees from them. This leads to selection of
qualified employees out of these applications. Resulting in reduction of time taken for the
vacancies to be filled. Business in which there is no diversity in employees they lack the
dynamic pool of talent and are likely to face difficulties ate time of filling of key roles. This lead
to increase in cost of recruitment. It can also be helpful for an organisation for expansion and
improvement in operations in both national and international markets. It also helps a organisation
to enhance its techniques and bring out the best of there employees. Its also promotes variant
ideas of giving growth to employees. There are various other benefits of diversity in workplace.
It provides employees and variant and dynamic nature of unique ideas which leads to
development of an organisation in faster manner. A diverse workplace helps an organisation in
providing targets and task from various department which increases there capacity of multi
tasking of employees. A diverse workplace also provides the employees to deal with various
problems faced by them at work place and gain growth in an organisation. This also leads to
increase of interaction with the customers and identify there problems. Also satisfaction of
customer is also provided.
Challenges of diversity at workplace of ASDA.
According to the Reynolds (2017), diversity at workplace promotes respect, acceptance,
and teamwork despite deviation in race, religion, sexual orientation, native language, age,
gender, political beliefs or communication styles among workers. There are number of
challenges that faced by ASDA due to diversity. Some are determined as below:
Language and communication: It is a main barrier or issue that are ever-present in
ASDA with a diverse workforce. For example: In UK or US different number of organisations
hire people whose native tongue or basic speech communication is not English, so workers and
administrator sometimes have more difficulties in acquiring their message across. This issue can
lead to productivity loss of workers (Biggest Diversity Issues in The Workplace, 2020).

Acceptance and Respect: This is another issue of diversity that have to faced by ASDA
at their working place. For example: poor acceptance of diverse culture among entire workforce
may arise conflict. Sometimes such type of conflict move to animosity as well as may even
effect situations of violence.
Uniformity: All the different employees belong from different culture whose having
various values and beliefs. This has futuristic negative impact over the working structure and
culture of an organisation. All use different working approached that will lead the situation of

CHAPTER 3- METHODOLOGY
Research methodology refers to the process for gathering data about the study in
systematic manner. Main purpose of research methodology is to help an investigator in gathering
of reliable information (Flick, 2015). In this section of project, number of useful methods have
been included which will be described as below:
Types of study:
A research is primarily performed with the use of two kind of study which are
quantitative and qualitative. Among them, quantitative type of study will be applied as it give
data in form of number. Qualitative study is another type that will be not useful for current
investigation. This type take more time and resources of an enterprise or researcher (Gioia,
Corley and Hamilton, 2013). So, quantitative method of research is used for conducting current
research. This is so because this will help to collect reliable data in less period of time.
Research Design:
There are number of patterns or methods which get be applied by researcher to keep their
research more presentable while using a specific format. This part of methodology are
categorised into three types such as descriptive, exploratory and experimental. Within a research
descriptive type of study will be applied because it assist in covering entire aspect of research
effectively (Green, Camilli and Elmore, 2012). As compare to other types, descriptive design is
more useful because it contribute towards the presenting better knowledge about the study to the
reader.
Research approach:
This section of the report is based on two approach such as inductive and deductive. For
performing this investigation, deductive type of approach is applied because it support in
analysation of quantitative data about the diversity practices. Inductive approach is not
appropriate and valuable for current investigation as it take more time of researcher or
organisation (Kumar, 2019).
Time Horizon:
There are two sort of time horizon approach such as longitudinal and cross sectional.
Within a research, cross-sectional approach will be applied because it is based on current

situation and help in completing of study is sufficient time period. Longitudinal approach is not
used for this research because it require maximum time period (Mackenzie and et. al., 2012).
Data collection:
This part of study is categorised into two effective method such as primary and
secondary. For primary method, questionnaire is best source that would be used by researcher for
collecting reliable data. In case of secondary source, number of useful sources will be applied
such as books, magazines, articles, publication research etc. Along with these, primary and
secondary source of data collection will be going to applied by researcher (Mackey and Gass,
2015). Main reasons for using these sources of data collection as it helps in gathering of reliable
as well as in-depth information regarding the equality and diversity practices and its
contributions in improvement of staff performance.

al., 2012). Main purpose for using this instrument as it assist in gathering of data in form of
quantitative and real.
Sampling techniques:
Sampling is a process of recruiting the group of person who can give data about current
topic on behalf of entire population. There are basically two kind of sampling techniques such as
non-probabilistic and probabilistic. Among these techniques, probabilistic sampling will be
applied because it give equal possibility to each person for getting chosen as a sample and assist
in decreasing the possibilities of bias behaviour. 50 staff members of ASDA will be selected
randomly by applying probabilistic sampling. Non-probabilistic sampling is not appropriate for
current investigation because it take additional cost and time of the investigator (Quinlan and et.
al., 2019).
Ethical issues:
In order to perform each tasks of study in effective manner an investigator must consider
or follow ethics so that reliable and most appropriate data can be presented. Within an
investigation, ethics are mainly related with confidentiality, integrity, beneficiary, anonymity,
honesty and informed consents etc. These will support researcher in completion of entire activity
of study in ethical manner (Riedl, Davis and Hevner, 2014).
