What is the nature of the situation or issue?
The issue that has been selected for the current analysis is Domestic Violence in Canada. The
impact of the same on the society and its features are being used in the present study. The nature
of issues is dangerous as there have been reportedly a good number of cases of domestic violence
in Canada. Domestic violence can be understood as aggressive and most violent and abusive
behaviour by a spouse or from parents. In some cases, women also perform domestic violence
against their children. Domestic violence has been poisoning the quality of the society and the
harmony of people living there.
How are the key terms being defined?
The key terms in the above scenario are domestic violence, victimization which means the
people that are majorly the one facing the issues in their house. These victims are mostly women
and in some cases, children and older adults also going through the problem. Another important
term is the spousal violence that means sexual partners and spouses majorly do the force to the
women. Another important term is the social impact of domestic violence; this shows how
society is impacted by growing such trends in society. The psychological and physical effects are
also some of the crucial factors associated with domestic violence.
What are the characteristics of the population experiencing the condition?
The population that is facing the issues includes women, children, elderly and handicapped.
Women become victims because of their financial dependency on their partners and also for the
sake of fulfillment of their children. Another issue is the age-old culture of husbands dominating
their wives and wives adapting it as a part of their culture. Another victim is the children who are

governed by either of their parents, there dependency on their parents for basic needs and being
physically weaker they become victims of all the issues that are happening in the household.
Some time elderly and the handicapped also had to face domestic violence as their physical
incapability, and full dependency on someone makes the other frustrated and they develop
violent behaviour against them in order to deal with the needs of an individual so as to deal with
the negativity they have against the weak (World Health Organization, 2014).
What is the scale and distribution of the condition?
As per the statistics that have been collected about domestic violence this can be said that around
26% of the family experiences violence and in the 67% of the victims are women and girls.
Approximately 79% of the women are facing issues from their intimate partners, and the
homicide rate of women is more significant than men. Among the reported cases only 19% of the
cases are published with the police others are safely hidden away from recognition. Taking the
statistics of indigenous women, this can be said that they are 60% more like to become victims as
compared to urban women. 32% of the people have reported facing violence in their childhood
this includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, and intimate partner violence. Nearly 4% of the
people above 65 years have experienced domestic violence from other adults. In this case, the
women victims are more as compared to men victims (Canada, 2016).
What social values are being threatened by the existence of the condition?
The impact of domestic violence can be seen on the society and the nature of an individual. This
portrays a negative picture of the organization to others thus affecting the development of social
behaviour and intellect of the community. A child watching such cases at home assumes it to be
part of the population thus influencing the development of child education and their behaviour

towards others. This encourages other bad habits like alcohol and drugs in society that has been
creating severe mental health problems with an individual. This has been creating emotional and
physical trauma among children. They are losing focus in their studies and has loosed faith in
society. This has developed low confidence, and low self-esteem among an individual thus
affecting their behaviour and affects their development. This has reduced sympathy and trusts in
the society and has increased the social disparity in the community (World Health Organization,
2014).
How widely is the condition recognized?
This condition has widely been recognized by all the sections of the society thus affecting the
development of an individual and the society. Domestic violence has been recognized by all the
social and federal services in Canada. Apart from that the situation has been a point of discussion
in cultural aspects also thus affecting the development of the society. This situation has been
identified as one of the primary concern for social security and effect on the children and future
aspects of the society. This has been still under a lot of research as many indigenous and urban
cases are still unreported and secretly such issues are happening in society.
Who defines the condition as a problem?
This condition has been declared as a problem by the federal system of Canada. Domestic
violence has been reported as a crime and a punishable offence by Canadian law; the law has
been very strictly implemented on the people committing such crimes. The government has been
trying to generate awareness and knowledge among the people to eliminate such issues in
society.

What is the cause of the problem?
The primary cause of domestic violence that can be identified is the psychology of men
assuming themselves to be stronger and better than women. This also includes the family culture
and the perception that has developed in the society. Another cause of this problem is the
adaption of habits like drugs and alcohol. This influences the mind of the people, and they fail to
recognize the difference between right and bad. Another cause is the lack of education and
employment in society.
Are there ethnic or gender consideration?
In this case, gender considerations can be seen from the percentage of women being victimized
by violent spouses and partners. The women are more likely to learn the impact of this on
society, and the result of this will have on their children. Taking ethical consideration, it is very
shameful to say that culture is still not considering both the genders equal Canada, 2016).
Problem statement: Why is Canada experiencing Domestic Violence and what are the factors
fueling this idea in the society?
