impact of domestic violence on the children. This paper is discussing this issue because there are
increasing numbers of children who are dealing with the adverse impact of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is a behavior that is developed in an intimate relationship that leads to
physical, emotional, and mental harm and majorly impacts the children.

Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of domestic violence on children by
taking into consideration some of the papers published. There are millions of children who deal
with domestic violence those not just impacts their health but also their mental state, which
makes it important to highlight this issue in the society such that a proper step can be taken to
reduce this (Swanston, Bowyer & Vetere, 2014). This paper is also examining the influence of
domestic violence on young children's lives, and the role that school can play in addressing their
needs. In order to identify the detailed information, the use of different methods is done such as
primary and secondary methods, data analysis methods, etc. These methods have supported in
identifying reliable and valuable information related to the research topic.
Background
Domestic violence is determined as the behavior in an intimate relationship that has
physical, sexual harm, and psychological impact that profoundly affects children. Children who
experience domestic violence are likely to experience depression, chronic pain, anxiety, asthma
symptoms, and stress that are generally not experienced by their peers who are not exposed to
domestic violence. These types of children also demonstrate delays in their development, are
under-immunized, and missed medical appointments (Ragavan, Fikre, Millner & Bair-Merritt,
2018). Apart from this negative impact, the children are dealing with different types of violence
which is being considered as a silent issue which is increasing in the national as well as
international public policy discussion (Finkelhor, Turner, Shattuck & Hamby, 2015).
There are different types of abuse that take place in the domestic sphere. According to the
government of United Kingdome, domestic violence and abuse are the patent of incidents of

threatening behavior, abuse, or violence between people aged 16 years or over or have intimate
partners of gender or sexuality.
Methodology
The research methodology is considered to be one of the important parts of the research
study as it highlights different methods and approaches that are used to gather the data,
interpretation of data, and analysis of data.
In order to present this research, the use of qualitative research has been done in order to
identify the theoretical data related to the research topic that is the impact of domestic violence
on children. This will help in understanding the clear concept of domestic violence and the way
it impacts the mental and physical state of children. Besides this, another method that will be
used for this research is a descriptive research design in order to identify the detailed related to
the research topic. For identifying clear and detailed information related to the impact of
domestic violence on children the use of descriptive research design is important. In addition to
this, the research strategy is considered to be one of the important parts of the research
methodology because it helps in identifying the route that needs to be followed to conduct the
research. There are different types of a research strategy that are literature review, case study,
experience, etc. In order to present this paper, the use of a literature review as the research
strategy will be used as it helps in reviewing the different papers, journals, and other authentic
sources to identify valuable information related to the research topic. The literature review in this
paper will highlight the impact of domestic violence on children. Along with this, it will also
highlight the role that the school can perform in addressing this issue.
Furthermore, the data collection method is considered to be one of the most important
parts of the research as it helps in gathering the important and relevant data related to the

research topic. There are two methods of data collection that are the primary method and
secondary method. The primary method is about gathering fresh data related to the topic of the
research by the use of different methods such as interviews, questionnaires, etc. The secondary
method is about gathering the data that has already been published by different authors related to
the research topic. In order to present this paper, the use of the secondary method of data
collection will be used in order to identify the opinions and findings of different authors on the
topic ‘impact of domestic violence on children’. The secondary sources that will be used in this
method are journals, books, articles, websites, etc. Besides this, the use of the primary method is
also done to identify the reviews and opinions of teachers through the use of a survey.
The sample is the portion of the target population that is selected to gather important data
related to the research topic. Sampling is comprised of two methods that are used for selecting
the appropriate sample for the research paper. In order to present this paper, the use of the non-
probability sampling method is used under which the researcher has already selected some of the
research papers related to the topic that is the impact of domestic violence of children. Besides
this, the data analysis is another important part of the research paper in which the data is
analyzed by the use of different methods such as content analysis, thematic analysis, statistical
analysis, etc. In order to present this paper, the researcher will make use of content analysis
methods under which, the researcher will analyze the content presented in different research
papers selected for gathering the data.
Results
The research has highlighted the way domestic violence impacts the engagement of the
student in the learning at the time of living in abusive homes and after leaving it. Those children
who are leaving the domestic violence home deal with the additional threat of provisional

homelessness or have to stay at the overcrowded accommodation. The research that conducted
on the school teachers of England revealed that the consecutive issues of DV and homelessness
can result in the unbalanced accommodation among the children that also result in the re-housed
frequently, indebted to live with friends or relatives or stay at a long distance from the school
area because of the lack of local housing (Lloyd, 2018). Accommodations that are non-
permanent influence the abilities and development of children due to the lack of capability to
take part in the academic and social events. The teachers of the primary and secondary school
highlighted the influence of the homelessness on children like lack of proper space to study, no
access to a computer for the assignment, augmented stress and anxiety, overcrowded
accommodation that has a direct impact on their sleep. The teacher also reveals that children that
belong from the younger age groups became withdrawn, which increases the level of aggression
and anger. The study has also identified the negative impact on the teachers. It has revealed that
they feel emotionally exhausted and frustrated due to which they are unable to help their students
(Lloyd, 2018).
Discussion
This paper aims to highlight the impact of domestic violence on children. Domestic
violence is the behavior in an intimate relationship that has physical, sexual harm, and
psychological impact that profoundly affects children. According to Swanston, Bowyer & Vetere
(2014), domestic violence is the pattern of coercive behavior that is carried out by the intimate
partner in order to gain the control in a relationship. As per the research conducted, it has been
identified that there are around 29.5% children who are of less than 18 years deal with the
domestic violence environment and around 5.7% of children and young people deal with DV in a
year (Callaghan, Alexander, Sixsmith & Fellin, 2018). Domestic violence has resulted in the

homelessness of the children due to which they are unable to get proper education which impacts
their mental, physical, and social development. In order to deal with this problem, the
government of the United Kingdom has underlined the significance of the multi-agency working
in the protection of the child. For strengthening education, the government has allowed the
school to perform a greater role in impending constitutional guidance for protecting children.
Despite this importance, there are surprise results that very little attention has been given to the
inter-organizational info exchange in the educational structure. The government of the United
Kingdom has published statutory guidance for the colleges and schools with the title ‘Keeping
children safe in education’ highlights that protecting children is the responsibility of everyone.
Conclusion
The above paper has highlighted the details related to the impact of domestic violence on
children. From the analysis, it has been identified that domestic violence leads to impacting the
children mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. The children who deal with or
experience domestic violence at their home tends to leave the home and become homeless. This
situation does not make any positive impact on their life, in fact, its results in impacting their
emotional stability and education. In order to deal with these issues, the government of the
United Kingdom has designed different guidelines and allowed schools to perform a major role
in the development and protection of children from domestic violence. However, major
importance or attention has yet not been provided to these issues due to which the lives of many
children are impacted. In order to identify the data related to the research topic, the use of the
primary and secondary method is done such that the researcher can get enough data to present
the conclusion. Besides this, the use of different other methods and approaches like content

in the data that has been gathered by the use of different methods.
