Topic: The impact of domestic violence on children education
1. Background
Domestic violence affects the psychological and physical capabilities of the children,
which affects their academic career drastically (Katz, 2016). It has been found in a study
conducted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare that the homelessness of the children
due to domestic violence affects the psychological growth of the same (Thornton, 2014). The
exposure to violent home environment affects the capabilities of the children to absorb the
important constituents with increased disruptive and unfocused classroom behavior. Lander,
Howsare and Byrne (2013) noted that the violence is specifically dependent on the size of the
family and the manner in which the well being and treatment is being met out to the children.
Moreover, Graham‐Bermann et al., (2012) opined that the children being exposed to the
domestic violence is more prone to lowered emotional competence with degraded quality of
academic performance. The different elements that might be considered for identifying the
competencies are dependent on the manner in which the violence affects the psychological
growth of the children (Murray, Farrington & Sekol, 2012).
Domestic violence or lack of coordination and emotion among the parents might affect
the mental growth of the children (Bethell et al., 2014). Stanley, Miller and Richardson Foster
(2012) stated that the traumatic events related to domestic violence remains in the sub conscious
minds of the children which gets triggered in different events which affects the performance of
the same. Eriksson, Bruno and Näsman (2013) opined that the development of Post-
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among the children is specifically reliant on the level of
domestic violence that is encountered by the same. PTSD affects the mental growth of the

children while bearing future implications like stress, fear of abuse, depression and anxiety
(Bobonis, González-Brenes & Castro, 2013). On the other hand, the development of the disorder
among the children might devastate their academic career while affecting their concentration.
Domestic violence being met out to children in their schooling age might affect the self esteem
and confidence of the same which might again affect the participative nature of the same. It also
affects the academic performance of the children.
Saile et al., (2014) stated that increased amount of domestic violence to the children
might result to growing perversion and lack of concentration on the academic fields. Brown and
Ward (2012) noted that the increasing rate of domestic violence on the children has affected the
potentials of the same in concentrating on their studies. The different events in the life of the
children have affected the mental and physical growth of the children, which has affected the
academic career of the same (Roberts et al., 2013). Van der Kolk (2017) stated that the academic
performance of the children are dependent on the balance in the behavioral and the
environmental factors apart from the support that is being provided by the parents. However, the
exposition of the children to domestic violence has incapacitated the same to perform in the
academic fields (Yoo & Huang, 2012). Therefore, the research that will be undertaken in this
connection will focus on the identification of the impact of domestic violence on children
education through the conduction of quantitative study.
1.1 Research question
The primary research question for guiding the research is:
 What is the impact of domestic violence on children education?
The secondary research question for guiding the research is:

might be adhered?

 What are the recommended activities that might be undertaken with the aim of avoiding
domestic violence and its impact on the academic career of the children?
2. Research aims
The primary aim of undertaking the research is:

The primary aim of the research will assist in guiding the study through the utilization of
different favorable methodologies. The utilization of the favorable mechanisms will assist in
enhancing the research dynamics to achieve the unbiased outcome. On the other hand, the
secondary aims of the research will aim at identifying the psychological needs of the children.
The research aims will also assist in suggesting recommended activities for minimizing the rate
of domestic violence and its impact on the psychological growth of the children. Therefore, the
aims will assist in enhancing the research study through a thorough identification and mitigation
activities related to domestic violence.

3. Research design
The research will be conducted through the utilization of the Positivism philosophy,
which will assist in identifying the importance of the situation through the exposition of different
scientific theories (Choy, 2014). The philosophy will assist in identifying the impact of domestic
violence on the psychological and educational aspects of the children through the utilization of
different behavioral paradigms like Family System Theory and Resilience Theory. On the other
hand, the research will be commenced through the utilization of the deductive approach that will
focus on scrutinizing different available models and theories while relating the same with the
research. Further the explanatory research design will be undertaken with the view of
identifying the cause and effect relation between domestic violence and its impact of education
of children (Arghode, 2012). The research will be executed through the utilization of
quantitative data collection method, which will be based on survey questionnaire to the
respondents. The data will be gathered and analyzed simultaneously for deriving the findings of
the study. Therefore, the integrated functioning of the different elements will assist in enhancing
the quality of the study through the implementation of appropriate research paradigms.
4. Research method
4.1 Sampling strategy and procedure
The sampling strategy that will be employed while undertaking the research is the
heterogeneous purposive sampling. The heterogeneous purposive sampling is a mechanism
through which a diverse range of situations might be analyzed which are relevant to a particular
phenomenon. Therefore, the concerned technique is a subjective sampling method. In this
connection, the research will be undertaken through the utilization of the heterogeneous

purposive sampling, which will ensure that a study of diverse range of cases where children
suffering from domestic violence would be taken as respondents. The heterogeneous purposive
sampling methodology will assist in enhancing the research study through the facilitation of a
huge number of responses on the subjective area of the study for authenticating the findings.
McCusker and Gunaydin (2015) stated that the utilization of the heterogeneous purposive
sampling in the methods assists the researcher in maintaining the efficiency of the findings and
guiding the study towards the unbiased outcomes.
The utilization of the heterogeneous purposive sampling will thereby assist in enriching
the research study through subjective responses based on the impact of domestic violence on the
academic career of the children. The respondents for the research will be the school- going
children who are facing different psychological issues, which are affecting the career growth
options for the same. Online surveys will be conducted with the aim of drawing the attention of
the children from 6 schools. The selection of the respondents will be based on the evaluation of
the academic performance and the psychological issues that are encountered by the children.
The utilization of the heterogeneous purposive sampling will thereby ensure the
enhancement of the study through gathering information from the different respondents. Yilmaz
(2013) stated that the active involvement of the respondents in the data collection process assist a
researcher in maintaining the efficiency of the study. Therefore, in this relation, the different
modifications that are undertaken by the researcher is reliant on the evaluation of the subjective
nature of the study.

4.2 Data collection methods
The data for the research will be collected through the utilization of Primary quantitative
data collection method. A set of online close- ended questions will be designed and will be
circulated among the respondents through the utilization of online media platforms like emails.
The quantitative questionnaire will assist in enhancing the efficiency of the research study
through the utilization of different perspectives of the respondents. The development of the
primary data collection technique will assist in gathering unbiased data from the different
respondents for ensuring the unbiased outcome of the research. On the other hand, the fragments
of information that is derived from the primary sources will assist in enhancing the research
through the utilization of different paradigms.
Wahyuni (2012) opined that the utilization of the primary quantitative data collection
assist a researcher in continuing with the authenticity of the study while developing different
alternatives. In this relation, the primary data for the research will be collected through the
creation of 20 close ended questions. The questionnaire will be circulated through the utilization
of the emails to school students from 6 different schools. The target respondents for the research
will be the students who are encountering issue related to performance in their academic careers
and those who are facing psychological issues due to domestic violence. The development of the
questionnaire will be assisting to continue with the efficiency of the study in accordance to the
need of understanding the psychological factors that are affecting the educational career of the
children.
The design of the questionnaire will be reliant on identifying the manner in which
domestic violence and mutual separation among the parents affect the psychological balance of
the children. On the other hand, the research questions will also emphasize on the manner in

which the disturbed mental growth of the children affects the educational career of the children.
The data that will be derived from the questionnaire will assist in proving the hypothesis of the
research for running the correlation and regression analysis. Arghode (2012) stated that the
structure and design of the questions is a significant factor that contributes to the understanding
of the impact of the independent on the dependent variable. Therefore, the current study will
formulate a well structured survey questionnaire for identifying and assessing the concerns that
are faced by the children while continuing with a proficient educational career.
The circulation of the questionnaire through the electronic media like emails will assist in
maximizing the scope of targeting the respondents for undertaking the survey. Maximized range
of responses from the different respondents will enhance the likelihood of the research in bearing
unbiased outcomes. The interpretation of the data will be validated through a range of responses
from the children who are suffering from psychological misbalances due to domestic violence
and poor relationship between the parents. Choy (2014) opined that the sample size creates an
impact on the survey results. Therefore, the current research will aim at maximizing the range of
responses from the selected respondents, the children, in order to identify the major issues that
are faced by the same due to the psychological constraints.
4.3 Proposed method of analysis
The hypothesis for the research study will be evaluated and the data from the quantitative
survey will be analyzed through the utilization of the SPSS program. The research will also
utilize descriptive statistics of frequencies and cross tabulations. Mean will be calculated with the
aim of assessing the average value through the delineation of the central tendency. On the other
hand, the research will also study the causal relation between the domestic violence and children
education. The delineation of the impact of domestic violence on the children’s educational

capabilities will be determined through the utilization of regression and correlation. The
utilization of the correlation and regression will assist in identifying the nature of relationship
shared by the dependent and the independent variables. On the other hand, the P value will be
calculated for analyzing the significance of the research hypothesis. Therefore, the data that will
be collected during the research will be analyzed through the utilization of diverse range of
platforms which will assist in identifying the tendency and impact of domestic violence on the
psychology and educational career of the children.
5. Ethics
 Psychological- The research will be commenced after gaining a consent from the
participants which will assist in adhering to the moral principles of conducting a study.
The consent will be based on the information being delivered to the respondents before
conducting the research. Keeping the participants informed of the study will assist in
enhancing the scope of the study to bear unbiased outcomes. On the other hand, the
consent from the participants will be assisting the investigator in developing the study in
adherence to the sentiments and moral that would guide the data collection and analysis
procedure.
 Social- The social aspects of the ethics are based on the considerations that are related to
data privacy and falsification. Data privacy assists in ensuring the confidentiality of the
responses that are provided by the respondents. On the other hand, the falsification of
data clearly maintains subjugated part of the research study through the maintenance of
the different aspects of change in the operational levels. (Lange, Rogers & Dodds, 2013)
The different social aspects of the ethics in the research study are reliant on the
development of trust among the respondents for collecting unbiased responses.

o The research will be undertaken while considering the vulnerable groups of
populations in order to maintain the efficiency of the ethical paradigms. The
vulnerable groups of population, like children in this research, are unable to
provide informed consent for the study due to lack of privacy. Therefore, the
research will be undertaken through a consideration of the vulnerable groups of
population with the aim of continuing with the efficiency of the study while
developing an insight on the different issues that are faced by the vulnerable
populations. The ethical consideration will assist in ensuring unbiased responses
from the respondents which will enrich the study design.
 Legal- The legislative framework related to the data privacy and confidentiality will be
followed during the research study. It will assist in building trust and confidence among
the respondents (Yilmaz, 2013). The utilization of the legislative framework will assist
in adhering to the legal aspects of the change that are undertaken by the researcher.
Maintaining the anonymity and confidentiality of the responses that are provided by the
respondents would assist in maintaining the efficiency of the research study while
maximizing the involvement of the respondents and provide unbiased outcome of the
study. The different aspects of change in the research project are based on the unbiased
outcome of the study.
 Financial- The financial constraint that might be encountered while undertaking the
research study is dependent on the shortage of resources, which might affect the quality
of the survey. The survey for the research requires a huge amount of financial sources.
However, lack of vast amount of financial resources might affect the potentials of the

research study. Therefore, an appropriate budget will be created for adhering to the
financial needs while conducting the research study.
