Effects of Drug Use on Young People: Research Findings and Analysis

Introduction
Drugs are the chemicals which affect brain and body. Distinct drugs
have distinct effects and some involves health consequences which are
permanent and long lasting. The brain of young people is growing and
developing until those individuals are in their mid-20's (Douglass, and
et. al., 2021) . Taking drugs in young age can interfere with
developmental process happening in the brain as well as effect decision
making of the people. This presentation aims to analyse the effects of
drug use on young people.

Brief Overview of the Research Topic
According to NHS Digital’s Smoking,
Drinking and Drug use among Young
People (SDD) report surveys, it has been
determined that there is high use of drugs,
smoking and drinking among young
children in the age group of 7 to 11 years
(Statistics on Drug Misuse, England, 2019.
2019).

Importance of Research in Health and Social Care
The research on the topic “the effects of drug use on young people” is
very important in health and social care as this help in improving the
health of adults by developing new interventions and programmes that
are assistive in preventing drug use by adults. This study will also
assist in enhancing the health outcomes for people who are using drugs
more in the adulthood age (Gerritsen, and et. al., 2021).

Research Process/ Search Strategy
In order to search data on the topic, some key words are used like drug
use, Health Care, youth, alcohol, World Health Organisation, National
Health survey etc. Apart from this, some Boolean operators like AND
and OR are also used for searching the articles. The articles published
in last five years are considered in this study.

Overview of Article 1
In order to conduct present research two articles has been selected. In
this one article titled as, Drug use among Teenagers and Young Adults
in Bhutan which is written by Kinley Wangdi and Tshering Jamtsho.
This article mainly aimed to evaluate the national prevalence of ever
drug use and determine its associated elements among young adults and
teenagers. It has been underlined that this article has been conducted
with the use of data from National Health survey 2012 of Bhutan.

Overview of Article 2
The second article which is titled as, Drug
addiction: A big challenge for youth and
children's which is written by Ajay
Kumar. This article states that drug
addiction is a major chronic disorder with
is having number of negative
consequences.

The study included in the article 1 is based on quantitative method in
which questionnaire was developed following WHO step wise
approach. On the other hand, article 2 is based on qualitative research
method. In addition to this, questionnaire tool was developed in the
article 1 in which WHO STEP wise method to surveillance of non-
communicable diseases is used. On the other hand, no tool was used by
the researcher in article 2. The study is completely based on secondary
data in which in-depth information is provided in the article about the
drug addiction.

Data Analysis/ Findings/ Critical Appraisal
Both the articles used in the study are valid and reliable. However, article
1 is more valid and reliable as the study was performed in a systematic
manner. The study used various methodologies which help in making it a
systematic study and the outcomes drawn from the study are also
reliable. The findings from both the studies are very useful reminding the
use of drugs among young people and their effects on them.

Conclusion
As per the presentation, it can be concluded that Drug use is very
common among the adult people and it affect the brain and body of the
individuals. Having drugs in young age can affect the developmental
process of brain in young individuals which in turn affect their decision
making. There has been high use of drugs are found among the young
individuals in the studies this negative impact on their mental health.
