INTRODUCTION
Recycling rate for household waste in UK was recorded 44.6% in 2016. This rate has been
reported since 2010 by UK government when recycling rate was observed to be 40.4%. In recent
years; some fluctuations has been observed in recycling rate. In order to measure the recycling
rate of household waste, no standard is formula available. So Defra in May 2014; introduced the
“waste from household “ calculation. UK National authorities introduced an approach to measure
the rates of household recycling material (Gopinath 2020). They decided to measure all local
authority collected waste includes, household waste, street sweepings, street bins, waste from
parks and grounds, etc. and the prepare a report on basis of financial year (Hahladakis and et. al.,
2018).
DISCUSSION
England has shown a great improvement in last 5 years, Wales household recycling rate
has increased from 50.5% to 63.8% in 2016-17. Scotland has been reported to decrease the
process of recycling since 2010. Northern Ireland, showed to improve the recycling rates from
27.7% to 39.7% since 2006 to 2012.
Reports are showing variations of rates in different regions (McNeill and et. al., 2021).
At some places rates are seems to be increase while at some localities it seems to decrease.
Reason might be the spreading of consciousness and awareness amongst population via local
authorities which increase the interest towards recycling and reuse of household wastes (Gregson
and Forman 2021). While reason for decrement in data recording might be due to improper
management of household waste and carelessness of responsible authorities in the field of waste
management or insufficient supply of funding by agencies (GANI, 2019).
CONCLUSION
This report covers the discussion about waste management in England. It covers the
statistical data about different localities in England and rate of recycling of household waste in
Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
