INTRODUTION
Health and safety is important aspect that provides the right to each and every person
regarding their protection from negative impact of work they performed. This will brings an
obligation upon employer to adopt all necessary measures that help to protect workers at
workplace. The objective of this report is to analyse the legislation named Display Screen
Equipment.
The aspects covered in report includes specific health and safety issues associated with
this use of DSE legislation and the measures that help in their avoidance in future.
MAIN BODY
1. Specific health and safety issues associated with this use of DSE legislation
Health and safety (Display screen equipment) Regulations 1992 brings an obligation
upon the employer to protect workers from health issues associated with the usage of display
screen equipment. The various number of health related issues are covered under this legislation
which are mentioned below:
The incorrect use of display screens, poorly designed workstations and presence of
negative work environment can leads to problems related to:
Neck
Shoulders
Back
Arms
Wrists and Hands
as well as fatigue and eye strains
The health issues associated with DSE are not obvious in nature. This would be the
reason that these are categorised into three different categories which are mentioned below:
Physical: The term which is used to define the number of conditions such as carpal
tunnel or tendonitis is known as musco-skeletal disorders.
These conditions are generally known as repetitive strain injuries. Other terminologies
which are used to depict the same kind of issues includes:

Visual fatigue: The permanent damage is not happened to eyes but this resultants into
many type of issues such as ired eyes, discomfort, headaches and temporary short sightedness.
Mental Stress: The of DSE also leads towards mental stress. The situation of stress
makes the muscles and soft tissues tense up. In this situation of tense up, more chances are
present regarding injury (Display Screen Equipment, 2018).
2. Measures to avoid health and safety issues
The measures which are commonly help in removal of the issues along with providence
of optimum safety against risks are mentioned below:
For removal of RSI, needed to apply good practice while working at home or workplace.
Also, needed to provide the training to workers in relation to;
Posture
The use of correct equipment
Sensible short breaks in activity
Exercise
There are some other general measures which are needed to be taken from the side of
employer includes;
Eye tests: Regular eye tests will be conducted after completion of significant time period.
This will help to take preventative action in case of identification of any issue.
Eye wear: Employer must required to provide significant eye-wears for protection from
rays.
CONCLUSION
It has been concluded from the above report that the issues covered under the legislation
are of three types physical, visual and mental. The measures that help to resolve identified risks
will be regular eye test, use of eye wear, sitting in proper posture and training to employees.
