E-Learning: Impacts, Recommendations to Meet Demand During COVID-19

This report examines the effects of e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting both positive and negative impacts on students. It discusses the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of e-learning, as well as challenges related to internet access and self-motivation. INTRODUCTION
E-learning or electronic learning is refers to the teaching students on online platforms.
This enables instructor to communicate with its students and assists them in solving their
problems. It also enables the delivery knowledge to a single online channel where several
number of individuals could join the session. Along with this, this makes individual to attend
their learning session at any time. In year 2020, as there was pandemic situation due to COVID
19, people were not allowed to step out of their houses as government has imposed lockdown
across all the countries and this enable e-learning to take place so the children could continue
their learning virtually.
Negative effects of E-learning
E-learning is considered as the delivering of knowledge using online platforms. This is
important as this provides opportunity to gain knowledge, taking session from anywhere in the
world. It just requires an electronic device which has an internet connects and screen to view the
contents and these devices could be mobile devices, tablets, laptops and so on (Kong, Chu and
Li, 2021). E-learning has both the positive as well as creates negative effects. Under this topic,
the discussion would be on the negative effects of e-learning which is mentioned below:
According to Tamm (2020), there are various drawbacks of e-learning. E-learning has taken a
major part in ones life during COVID 19 as all the students were attending their classes online
which enables them in continuing their eduction and gaining knowledge (10 Biggest
Disadvantages of E-Learning, 2020). The major two negative effects of e-learning are mentioned
below:
Access to internet: The individuals who would be attending classes online requires a
strong internet connection along with a device so that they could join. If there is no internet
connection, the student would not be able to interact with other as well as misses out essential
information. This is important for parents to give better education and e-learning requires
equipments in which the parents are ensures to provide with all the facilities. For using this
technology for attending the sessions online, both parents and children needed to learn
technological skill that requires a basic knowledge such as handling of devices, connecting

internet and joining of class (Gentile and et. al, 2020). This is vital for student to have the
technological skills so they do not suffer rewarding this situation. If the student doesn't know
about the basic technological skills, this would create a negative impact as well as makes student
losing confidence in themselves. Thus, it is significant to have the basic knowledge about the
technology which would be providing benefits to the student. For learning to be taken
effectively, internet plays a vital role as without internet, no individual would be able to interact
with others. Country such as India is considered as a main player in the e-learning world but still
there is gap where in parts of the nation, there in no internet access in which children were
suffered in the pandemic as they were not able to attend their classes or gain knowledge (10

Requires self motivation and time management skills: Self motivation plays a
significant role in completion of online courses and without self motivation, the student would
face difficulties in attending the classes and completing the course. As compared to the
traditional class, there were many elements which supports students to have a push that leads
them into a goal of learning. One of the major factor is face to face communication where the
students would be able to communicate with their professor or instructor which enables them to
maintain their track for studies. On the other hand, online learning makes the student left during
learning tasks without having a push for their goal of learning (Kapasia and et. al, 2020). There
would be no pressure on the students for maintaining their learning materials at the homes and as
an outcome, there would be lack of motivation as student has not completed their learning course
at time which is also lack of time management
Positive effects of E-learning
E-learning now a days has taken a important part in student's lives which enables them to
learn as well as completing their courses and degrees. The online delivering of knowledge has a
significant role on the students in which they experiences a personalized and user-friendly
platform (Razak and et. al, 2020). The positive effects on e-learning is mentioned below:
Flexibility: As the outbreak taken place, every student was shifted towards virtual classes
where the individuals was having the facility to interact with the instructor and their fellow
classmates at the same time. The e-learning platform has various functions such as mute option
which enables user to mute themselves so that the other participants could not hear the
individual's voice. Along with this, they also have an option of video off so that when a students

put their video off, the other people on the online platform won't be able to see. Such facilities
provide option for student to attend their classes from anywhere whether sitting in their bedroom
or having meal. Also, with the assistance of internet, both instructor and student as an option for
providing knowledge to students and student would be able to learn at any time and at any
environment (Shetu and et. al, 2021). In traditional learning method, the students has to
physically visit their learning institute for getting knowledge and they have to attend classes and
be in institute for a fixed period of time whereas, in online learning platform, the student has the
flexibility to attend class whenever they want as well as they also have an option to see and learn
from the recorded sessions which enable them to watch at any time.
Saves money and time: According to Lych (2020), e-learning has made possible for
individuals to gain knowledge whenever they want. This offers an opportunity to communicate
with the instructor and fellow mates from distinct place. Through e-learning, one could easily
saves money as the person doesn't have to use transportation facilities for reaching to the
learning institute. The instructor and student has an option to schedule their classes and attend
sessions as their most suitable time. This provides with the saving time such as the travelling
time, getting ready for the schools or universities and many more. In such a way, the student are
saving money and that could be utilised in gaining of new knowledge. Moreover, the parents are
paying an adequate amount of fees to the schools and colleges whether their child is going to
learning institute or not as well as the student is getting a proper knowledge of not. The learning
institute are focusing more in the money and not on the students. As the examinations of the
learning institute make sure about the future of the student as well as ensures to make
judgements on the basis of marks they obtained and not on the basis of their talents and
capabilities. This provides a negative effects on the mental health. The e-learning sessions make
sure to provide knowledge as well as ensures to include fun activities for the learners which is
advantageous for the students. This makes the self confidence of student up which creates a
significant part in their lives. Also, this is also essential for parents to provide all the equipments

The whole education has been shifted towards online. During COVID 19 outbreak, the
people were not able to attend their classes and offices as all the industries were shutdown and it
has majorly affects the education industry. In every nation, COVID 19 has affects their people
severely. As per the report, it has been stated that the school and universities has been closed
since last year which is approx 60 weeks and more (COVID-19 impact on education, 2021).
COVID 19 pandemic has affected the lives of people globally and has a very server impact on
the education system. This pandemic has influenced the normal teaching and learning process of
people. Approximately 1.2 billion children in around 186 countries have been affected by this
pandemic. Before this pandemic many educational authorities had implemented or adopted
online learning platform which has benefited them in the times of crises. These authorities have
provided video conferencing, language app, online meetings, etc. for learners. For an effective
online classes an institution must have all the essential coursework related material in order to
provide all the necessary information to the students and make them clear about the topic while
teaching. The recommended strategy to improve online learning experience for students is that
an institution must continuously upgrade its courses according to the interest and preferences of
students. This will enhance the engagement of students in the class as the class is according to
their interests. It will attract a large number of students and they will not feel bore in the online
session (Wang, 2020). Institutions should take regular feedback from the students about their
experience during online sessions in order to improve their services if they lack in any. The
teacher must have a conversation with students to make sure that they are comfortable or not in
the class. This will encourage students to ask questions and in expressing themselves. In order to
increase the interest of students an institution must organise fun activities during the class.
Students like to play games which they are missing as schools are closed. So, it is recommended
that fun games or activities must be provided to students to boost up their interest in the class and
in this way they will enjoy the ongoing session. As the concentration power of students is for
limited time period hence, it is recommended to provide the students small breaks in between the
sessions in order to make the learning effective and efficient. These small breaks will increase
the level of concentration of students and also they will get more involved in the studies. These
breaks should not be long as it will break the continuity of the class. The breaks may contain

some fun activities in order to entertain students in the ongoing class. To motivate students and
to encourage them towards studies scholarship or reward programs must be launched by the
organisations. The teacher can give certificates or rewards to the students according to their
performance. This will encourage students to perform well and they will give their hundred
percent attention in listening to the teacher or E-learning mentor.
All the above recommendations will help institutions in providing effective online
learning platform for students in the times of this pandemic. These recommendations will help
them in building an efficient learning experience for students and will also increase their
participation in the class.
CONCLUSION
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that e-learning has taken a major role in
student's lives due to COVID 19. This is beneficial for students as it provide flexibility to them
so that they could easily gain knowledge wherever they want. E-learning has both its merits and
demerits which creates both positive and negative effects on the learners which is included in
this report. Along with this, recommendations on how e-learning environment could be
effectively provide it to the students during the outbreak is also included. As COVID 19 is still
active, the learning institutes are still using online platforms for teaching the students. During the
outbreak, this is a great opportunity for students to learn in these times and continuing their
studies with the help of online platforms and keep exploring their area of interest.
