Summarising (recommended word count: 100)
a.i.1. Find a text on university fees in the country of your choice (around 200 words) and
paste it below, in part 1. Then, read the two texts and highlight the main points.
PART 1:
Text 1:
University fees in England
Text 2 (paste your text below):
University fees in Australia
“University tuition fees in England will rise to £9,250 per year
from 2017 and the increase could apply to students who have
already started courses. The inflation-linked rise represents a
2.8% increase and if that continued would mean fees rising
above £10,000 in the next few years. Universities face the
dilemma that under consumer protection requirements they will
need to announce the £9,250 fee before the beginning of the
next application cycle in early September. However, until
formally changed by Parliament, universities are not allowed to
charge a fee higher than £9,000, which is the current limit.
The government says the increase can apply to students who
have already begun courses - but this will depend on the terms
of student contracts in individual universities. The fees will
increase in subsequent years. Royal Holloway and the
University of Kent have to still to decide on whether to charge
higher fees for current students, but expect to apply them to new
students starting in 2017, if the fee limit increase goes ahead.
The University of Surrey will not increase fees for its current
undergraduates, but fees will increase each year for students
starting in 2017.
Universities minister Jo Johnson has published a statement
setting out plans to link higher fees to better teaching. Liberal
Democrat university spokeswoman Baroness Lorely Burt said:
"Linking fees to teaching quality in this way is unacceptable.
Enabling any university that scrapes a 'meet expectations' rating
to increase fees by 2.8% shows that this isn't about teaching
quality at all. If universities need further support then let's have
a proper discussion about where that money comes from, rather
than pretending that this is somehow a quid pro quo for
providing the quality of teaching students should already be able
to expect". Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of the Sutton Trust
education charity, said the fee increase will add to student debts
that we have shown to be by far the highest in the English-
speaking world. A real concern is that the removal of
maintenance grants will almost certainly deter poorer students,
who now face debts of over £50,000 on graduation”.
From: Coughlan, S. (2017). University tuition fees rise to
£9,250 for current students –BBC News. [online] BBC News.

Australia is one of the most popular study
destinations in the world, hosting over 480,000
international students as of March 2017, 15% more
than the year before. However, it’s also unfortunately
one of the most expensive, with students needing
AU$19,830 (~US$15,820) each year for living costs
alone, according to the country’s student visa
requirements. Meanwhile, tuition fees at Australian
universities vary considerably depending on where
and what you study, and the level you will be
studying at.
The average tuition fee for international
undergraduate students was AU$29,235
(~US$23,400) per year in 2017. Study in Australia,
the official government site for international students,
gives the typical annual tuition fees for international
graduate students as:
Master’s degree – AU$20,000 (US$16,000) to
$37,000 (US$29,600);
Doctoral degree – AU$14,000 (US$11,200) to
$37,000 (US$29,600).
These figures do not include high-value courses such
as veterinaryor medical degrees, which can cost
significantly more.
Tuition fees at Australian universities are generally
calculated per unit, not per year. Each unit falls into a
fee band, and as most students will be studying a
combination of units from different bands, fees will
be different for everybody. The yearly cost of an
international undergraduate degree from ANU ranges
from AU$32,640 (~US$26,135) for some Bachelor of
Arts programs, up to AU$43,632 (~US$34,900) for
Bachelor of Science or Medical Science programs.

What are the similarities and differences between universities in England and Australia in
relation to tuition fees? Why are they important?
version 1.0 5

The similarities between both countries universities is that in England the fees is increasing constantly per year
and in Australia the average fees is so high that students are paying. Both the countries are rich in education
system and in tuition fees. Differences are that in England students will know how much increase in the tuition
fees they will have to face next year and in Australia students are not aware of the increase in the fees. They are
important because students need to take quality education and in the rise of fees is for the improvement of
education system.

Different fees structure in England and Australia
The fees structure in England higher education system will increase continuously from 2017 and this
increase also applicable to students who have already taken admission in previous years.. This increase will
almost take growth by 2.8% for next few years. The government has also said that students who have already
taken admissions will have to depend on the university and their rules and regulations. Fees will be increasing
further in subsequent years. University’s minister published a statement suggesting that these implications are
generated for advance teachings for the students and to meet the expectations of students to overcome their
issues related to debts.
Australia is considered as one of the most expensive country for education and it has seen a 15% growth of
students more than previous year. The average tuition fees is calculated as AU$ 29,235 and the students need to
have on an average of AS$ 19,830 for their accommodation. The tuition fees are different for different courses
and it is calculated in per unit, not per year and each fall into a fee band.
Conclusion
It is concluded that the education system is different in both the countries but it is expensive in relation to
different countries. The government need to put a control over the education fees and derive ideas to make
students take proper education.
