3. Learning activity:
Description of a practical language or literacy activity you could use in the early childhood setting to
support the child/children’s oral language development in the Australian context. How are you going to
introduce the activity, what will you do during the activity (to involve the child/children and support their
learning) and how will you conclude the activity? (approx. 200 words).
Language activity which could be seen in order to implement at the early stage of childhood which
can help in developing the child's oral language skills is singing. This practical activity could be
implemented trough singing, by using rhyming books and audios. Within this activity 4 children will taken in
a group to making them sing a rhyme (Engeström, 2018). Here children will sing the rhyme turn by turn and
also in collaboration. Within this activity, children have the chance of improving their oral language and
also I will ask them to present their rhyme. By singing the short rhyme It will surely increase their speaking
skills and will be able to sing the rhyme. This activity will also include tongue twister which is the best way
for improving verbal skills. At the end of the activity we will sing two more rhymes which would be
somewhat more lengthy and complex and these two rhyme will sang into different tones. There could be
addition to this activities by adding introducing learning of grammar like noun, verbs, objects etc. If
children are able to sing rhymes with identifying the noun, objects, verbs etc can prove success of the
activity.
Phonological Language : Phonological language is the study or the pattern of sounds in a language that
helps children to organized things in mind and used to convey the meaning of the message.
Syntactic : Syntactic is the method or ways which forms or combine the phrases, clauses and sentences to
make the proper form of language.
Pragmatics : Pragmatics is a sub field of linguistic and semiotics that studies the ways in which context
contributes to meaning. This approach can also helpful for the children to better develop the understanding
of languages.
Some of the activities which can be conducted for supporting children in development of oral language
include promoting conversation. Reading books loudly is considered to be as one of the best activity which
can be conducted in classroom for supporting children in development of oral language. In addition to this ,
teacher can have conversation with children before and after book-reading. Oral story telling activity can be
conducted in the classroom for supporting children in development of oral language. Teacher can ask
students questions in specific language , as this activity will help children enhancing their vocabulary.
