3. Learning activity:
Description of a practical language or literacy activity you could use in the early childhood setting to
support the child/children’s oral language development in the Australian context. How are you going to
introduce the activity, what will you do during the activity (to involve the child/children and support their
learning) and how will you conclude the activity? (approx. 200 words).
Language develops naturally, as children grow. According to Lynch and Redpath (2014), language is
arbitrary because words are chosen randomly to identify any object or action. They also mention that
children, who are given no systematic training on language, still acquire the basic skills of using a language.
However, it is important that children be given adequate learning on language and literacy. In the context of
Australia, teaching language and literacy to children from an early age is very crucial because of the
country’s diverse background.
The activity that can be used to teach the children of the age group of 5 to 7 years is scribbling and
drawing activity. I will introduce the activity by showing an animated picture of some things used every day
to the children. In this way, I will be able to capture the children’s attention from the very beginning of the
class.
I would distribute drawing books and colorings pens and pencils to the children and ask them to draw
the things they see around them. After that, I will participate in the activity, draw pictures myself,
intentionally commit mistakes so that the children can identify those and correct me. In this way, I can keep
them engaged and give them a sense of achievement while they correct me.

To conclude, I will ask each child to show their drawings and explain what they have drawn. While
doing so, I will make sure that the children could spell what they have drawn.
4. Focus concept/s:
Identify and describe relevant key concept(s) of language and literacy that are the focus of your learning
activity plan (approx. 100 words)
The main concepts of language used in this activity are phonology and semantics. Children between
the ages of 5 to 7 years acquire the ability to recognize the sounds of a language that is phonology. Their
literacy development in terms of phonology is based on the literacy environment they have at home.
Semantics refers to the meanings conveyed by language through different ways. By the age of 5,
children develop the ability to associate meanings to the words they hear. To give an instance, when the
children hear the word ‘chair’, they associate it with the word ‘table’ thus displaying their semantic
development.

5. Resources/props:
Resources/props which would be used for the activity (you can include images if you wish) (50 words)
Drawing books with pictures of animated alphabets would be used. In addition, picture book for
children to draw and color would also be used. Toy chairs, tables and other items will be used as well in order
to explain the children better. This would ensure that the children are paying attention to the learning
activities.
6. Curriculum connection:
How the plan relates to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) (approx. 50 words)
Five outcomes are mentioned in the EYLF that relates to early education involving children from
birth until they attain the age needed for joining school ("Belonging, Being & Becoming: The Early Years
Learning Framework for Australia", 2018). The present learning activity plan relates to the Learning
Outcome 4 that states that children are confident and involved learners.
