Numeracy in Play: Activities and EYLF for 0-5 Years

INTRODUCTION
This presentation is based on early childhood learning especially in
terms of maths and numeracy. It will provide detailed
information on the numeracy and learning activities that supports
children belonging to the age group of 0-5 years in developing
their knowledge on same. Furthermore, detailed information on
the usage of EYLF in order to enhance learning of the children
will be explained.

Numeracy and Maths
Numeracy is mainly considered as the ability of having effective
understanding and capability of working with the numbers.
Numeracy is the capacity to spread over mathematics
conceptions in all ranges of life. The respective term is also seen
as the set of maths skills that is useful for children as well as
others in their regular based lifestyle effectively. Numeracy
mainly includes counting, measuring, sorting, noticing shapes,
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc.

Overview
Numeracy plays an essential role in the learning capability of
children and also provides them support in increasing command
over curriculum that also allows them in resolving issues or
problems related to general life style effectively. In this project
concept related to numeracy has been chosen for teaching
children belonging to the age group of 0-5 years. Here, for the
selected zone of children EYLF is used as main curricula
document that will support learners in enhancing their
knowledge on numeracy and maths.

Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
EYLF, describes the principles, practices, and outcomes that
enhances and provides support to the learning of young children.
 EYLF mainly covers the age group between the range of 0-8
years. The main aim EYLF is to enhance and extend learning of
children from their birth to five years.
 It also provides assistance to the educator's or teachers in
maximizing knowledge and learning of children so that they can
succeed in the future in effective manner.

Numeracy and Children
According to studies, the children start learning numeracy skills
right from the time of birth. In the starting stage these children
firstly recognizes face of their parents. It has been determined
that children belonging to age of 6 months and onward starts
noticing sizes and even numbers of different objects placed in
front of them. Then, they started focusing on the voices and also
gives respond towards the same.

Development of Numeracy in children
Development of numeracy in children is highly important as it
allows them in facilitating their understanding maths that
provides contribution in resolving problem of daily based life in
effective manner. With the passing age or growing age it is
easier for the children to grow their numeracy skill.

Normally growing of age of children influences their interest
towards the work and also attracts them towards learning in
many forms some of them are:
 Recognizing objects like, cars, toys, phone, books etc.
 Counting of fingers, toys, toes etc.
 Comparing sizes like big & small objects
 Knowing about Measuring like Heavy & light

Support in development of Maths and
numeracy
It has been analyzed that development in early age of child related
to maths and numeracy is very important as this age easily
acquire new things and accept them in easier manner. According
to the past experience, it has been seen that educators which
makes use of several games like various shape and size tool
which has very bright colors and numbers for making it easier
for children to execute their learning in effective manner.

Learning Mathematics through Play
It is easier for the children to develop their understanding over the
numeracy at younger age. At this age children run in quicker
manner and they grab things into their mind easily. Learning in
this age can be done easily with the usage of playful games and
other attractive activities. With reference to mathematical
concepts it can be said that parents and teachers often make use
of range of games in order to make things easier for children.

Examples of learning games
The examples of such games could be:
 Playing counting games,
 Playing songs having numbers in lyrics
 Toys having numbers like blocks
 Games involving rewards like one win rewards one candy
 Outdoor games involving distances like race, throwing balls
 Toy Laptops having numbers and Alphabets
