Ecological footprint (EF) gives anestimate of the demands regarding the biological
productivityas well asthe assimilative capacity of the biosphere, whichis derivedby measuring
a given human population over a period of time. The article-“Applying the ecological
footprint to ecotourism scenarios”, attempts to analyse the potentiality regarding ecological
footprints. The purpose of the essay ids to provide a brief summary of the article mentioned
above.
Discussion of the major points
This paper-“Applying the ecological footprint to ecotourism scenarios”assumes
ascenario of ahypothetical international ecotourism which involves an air travel, and attempts
to estimate the potential ecological footprints. This study estimates the potential net
ecological footprint by analysing secondary data collected from the secondary sources of the
host countries like-Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico,
Mongolia, Morocco,Philippines and so on. In case of a 14-day holiday the potential net
ecological footprint measured ranged from 0.02 to 4.26 global hectares (Hunter&Shaw,
2006).
Issues concerned or problems addressed
The issues concerned involves shortage of the foodstuffs,water, raw materials. This
study also takes into account transport-related problems. Again, this article showcases,
showcases, the total amount of wastesproduced while travelling by aeroplane. This includes
the emission of carbon dioxide produced from the burning of fossil fuels. Other negative
impacts on the environment mentioned by this study includes the loss of productive lands,
which is associated with the loss of buildings and roads.

produced a net negative EF value, which in turn, is indicative of the reduction in the demand

ecological footprints of ecotourism substantially defers from that of the mass tourism.
