Assignment Part 1
For the purpose of discussion I have chosen the news article, “Economic Inequality: What
It Is and How It Impacts You,” by Susannah Snider (2019). The primary reason behind choosing
the concerned article is that, it is primarily about socio-political and economic conditions of the
United States and it is directly related to political science. Political science considers human
beings as social beings and as the article is about the economic and social condition of the United
States, the same has been chosen. The news article has interested me owing to the fact that it has
mentioned a harsh truth from which the American society is suffering. It is a fact that economic
inequality in the United States is a burning issue and till date there is no sign of remedy to the
problem which is persistent. The news article discusses about how the problem is enshrouding
the socio-political and economic realms of the United States and how some people are trying to
provide a solution to this grave economic problem. Snider (2019) has justifiably pointed out that
“In recent months, politicians have debated the merits of raising marginal tax rates on the
wealthy, a move proponents say could reduce economic inequality.” But the wealth gap that is
broadening and widening day by day in the United States is an indicator to the fact that economic
inequality is a harsh truth that is affecting the socio-economic, political and cultural life of the
citizenry of the country. The populace is faced with the grim problem of economic inequality and
it has been gradually taking the shape of a menace.
As discussed earlier the news article is related to political science. Political science is not
only about political affairs and policies; it is also about the human society. In the news article it
has been clearly depicted how economic inequality is actually negatively impacting on the social
life of the American populace, and such depiction makes it easier for the reader to relate the
news article to political science. In the news article, Snider (2019) has provided a precise

definition of economic inequality and this makes the article more interesting and informative.
How the income gap is widening and how it is affecting the social status of individuals in the
United States is an issue that needs more emphasis and as the news article has dealt with the
concerned issue, it is has been easier for me to relate the article with different concepts of
political science including democracy and inequality. Economic inequality is an antithesis to
democracy and the article can be cited as a good source of information about how income gap
can eventually alleviate the degree of democracy in a particular nation. African Americans and
other people of color have been subjected to economic oppressions that have exerted undue
pressure on the concerned population. Owing to such oppression the degree of social inequality
is increasing day by day in the United States. The news article has been constituted of some
specific aspects of economic inequality and that is the primary reason why it has been chosen as
the political science item for analysis.
