Introduction
Carbon emission refers to release of carbon in atmosphere of Earth. Carbon is one of the harmful
gas present in the earth's environment and increasing amount of this gas in earth environment is
very dangerous for earth's atmosphere. Carbon produce a layer on the top atmosphere of earth
and because of this earth's atmosphere absorbs more heat of sun and deflect less heat and thus
increases earth's temperature significantly. This report file will hover around UK government
goal related to 2050 net zero goal. Due to high carbon amount in atmosphere more than 115
countries united and pledged of carbon neutrality in atmosphere by 2050. The company chosen
for this report file is EDF energy which is a UK based energy company. The main operation and
role of this organisation is to generate energy and electricity and selling natural gases and energy
in different businesses and households of United Kingdom. This report file will also cover
overview of goal set by UK government in decreasing carbon emission and its key legislation.
Key issues related to carbon emission and forecast related to carbon emission of upcoming 5
years and upcoming 30 years.
Main Body
Task 1
Overview of 2050 net zero goal:
It is the goal that set by EU for removing carbon emission from nature. It is very
important because day to day carbon emission increase that is not good for environment so that's
why every country takes an initiatives in which they are make strategies for dealing with carbon
emission. It is the goals that set for removing carbon emission by 2050 so everyone live in the
natural environment. It is set in November, 2018 that has a aim to balanced the emission with no
more addition in emission and neutral the environment. It is beneficial for each and very person
because of carbon emission diseases are rising at a high speed rate. So that's why EU take an
action regarding top solve this issue (Paliwal, Sharma and Burkhart, 2016). Not a single country
i.e. UK is added to this role, there are many more country that take a part in this process.
There are some legislation that should comply by the countries if they want to achieve
this goal. The two main countries that are legally bound by the agreement on this issue are UK
and France. It is identified that UK becomes the first G7 country in which they take initiatives for
curbing the carbon in country. It is made as a law that influence their 2030 goals. As they should

take initiatives to reduce the consumption of fuel by 30% to 40% (Yu and Cao, 2020). It is
identified that Committee on Climate Change (CCC) which is a non-departmental public body.
They advice government that climate should be emission free because it get continue rises and
increase global warming by 2 degrees. The aim that set by UK is to be net zero by 2050 in order
to greenhouse gas. They are focusing on reducing gas emission so that they can achieve their
gaols by 2050. it is not easy because it analysed that every country has a great contribution in
raising emission. UK run their factories that are emitted a very high amount of emission to
manufacturing products. Day to day increase in competition it becomes very tough for UK that
how they can achieve this target within time period because very business need to take some
initiative whether it is a small. It can not achieve by only governments' actions. So that's why UK
focuses on increasing the awareness of this goals so that every one take part for them.
In June 2019, UK's parliament passed a legislation in which they are bound to stop the
emission and reduce the greenhouse gas so that they can make the environment healthy. The
main reason of taking this steps is country analysing the impact of greenhouse gas on global
warming. As it rises by 2 % which is not a good sign for all over the world (Meng, Wang and
Wang, 2018). For that purpose, now every country tackle corrective measure but UK is the first
country who put this problem in G7 meeting. It becomes very beneficial if they achieve this
goals.
In energy industry 2050 net zero goals implementation have direct implementation as
because of that goal, energy industry have to find a new replacement of carbon such that they can
eliminate carbon from very root and neutralise it uses. This may result in increase in costing on
production as replacement technology can be expensive in comparison to carbon uses. Also
energy industries need to train their employees to use that new technology which also may
increase companies cost in training and development (ul Haq, Zhu and Shafiq, 2016).
Overview of EDF energy
EDF energy is British energy organisation part of big six companies in energy sector of
UK. It is among the top energy industry in the world dealing at large scale in terms of natural
gases and electricity. Their main job role is to generate electricity from different sources and
selling natural gases and electricity in UK households and businesses. It have nearly 13330
employees all over their branches and handle nearly 5.7 million customer and clients accounts.
The company was started in 2002 and over the year it has shown rapid growth in energy sector

expanding their businesses all over the UK. With time they have also manage to enlarge their
customer base. Over these years EDF have also seen many drop backs and fall out for instance in
2013 they have to bear a loss of £5 million because of environmental activists. These activist
have started No Dash For gas campaign and because of which EDF have to face major loss in
their businesses. EDF energy deal in various energy generation source such as fossil fuel, wind,
nuclear power and renewable energy.
Currently EDF energy have their branches in top cities of United kingdom such as London,
Exeter, Crawley, Barnwood and many more. The current market capitalisation of EDF energy is
nearly £30.01 billion (Tiwari, Ahmed and Sarkar, 2019). There can be various impact of climate
change on EDF energy such as with aggravating climate condition there are chances that EDF
energy will face increased protest from environmental activist. Also to decrease carbon emission
they might have to opt for expensive options that may effect their profitability in long term. Also
there are chances that because of high climate change company needs to tolerate many issues in
production as well as in their organisational working.
Task 2
Key issues faced by government of UK in achieving 2050 net zero goal
Key Issue 1
Key issue 1 is execution of plan as UK government is doing great in past years attaining 2050 net
zero goals but during current years UK is off the track and not able to execute the plans and
strategies . There can be many reasons behind lack of execution of plan and one of the main
reason is due to outbreak of Covid-19 virus followed by lockdown. Due to this UK have to face
sudden economy decline and also due to this UK have to invest their time and money in
hospitality sector protecting their people from death. Also because of Covid-19, government
have to face structural fall back and due to which government lack in the section of execution of
these strategies(Zhang and Wang, 2017). UK government need to form a proper managing
committee that will handle 2050 net zero goal even in the case of unprecedented uncertainties
and fall back.
Key issue 2
Second key issue in achieving 2050 net zero goals is need for new innovations. Although carbon
is one of the harmful elements present in the earth atmosphere yet it is one of the best source of
Document Page
energy production for energy industry. From replacing such a good yet harmful source from
roots UK government need innovate new technologies that can replace carbon in energy sector.
The element should be of same efficiency of carbo and lack of innovation is the main reason UK
government still not able to cut down carbon use properly. Also elements and technologies that
can replace carbon or eliminate harmful effects of carbon are very expensive and thus not every
industry in energy sector is able to implement these technologies and thus there is not significant
cut in carbon emission (Ahmad and Ghufran, 2019). UK government should work on motivating
there people for new innovations so that people can indulge more in this and thus able to replace
carbon based products efficiently and effectively.
Key issue 3
Lack of proper direction and leadership is the third key issue faced by UK government in
attaining 2050 net zero goals targeted. There are many reasons behind this issue and one of the
main reason is democratic fall back after Brexit. As UK opted out from the European union there
were high conflict in working of government as earlier UK have to follow and implement all the
rules and regulations formed by European Union but because of Brexit UK have to form there
own norms related to different activities of country. Thus they have to also form many strategies
related to achievement and implementation of 2050 net zero goals (Su, Yang and Liu, 2017).
Reformation of these strategies take there lot of time and also increases inefficiency and lack of
leadership. Due to this reason UK government have to face issue in achieving and attaining 2050
goal of zero carbon emission. To solve this issue UK government should work on their efficiency
of leadership so that the strategies can be form and implemented in such a way that the target can
be achieved.
Task 3
5 year forecast:-
Currently UK makes up less than 1% of global emission and from the above fact it can be easily
concluded that with efficient strategy UK can easily achieve their goal of zero carbon
emission(Huang, Zhu and Zhang, 2020). In upcoming 5 years UK can easily reduce this
percentage number to .08% or lower than that and also start replacing carbon developing
technologies with non-carbon technologies. Also UK can effectively train their employees in use
of these new technologies so that there will be no damage to the technologies in long run. Also it

is known that replacement for carbon technologies might be more expensive therefore UK can
effectively work on cost cutting of these non-carbon technologies.
30 years forecast:-
In upcoming 30 years which is year 2050 UK can effectively fulfil their goal of zero carbon
emission as UK have made lot of progress in this dimension prior to Covid-19 out break. Also
UK produces less than 1% of total global emission which is very less in numbers and thus it can
easily concluded that UK can easily attain their goals of no carbon emission in upcoming 30
years if all the strategies made related to this cause executed properly (Hu, Si and Liu, 2017).
Also UK can find a proper replacement of carbon technology in upcoming 30 years and also the
cost of the new technology will be at par or less than current technologies. Following proper path
UK can easily achieve all there targeted goals in coming 30 years.
Conclusion
From the above report it can be concluded that eliminating carbon emission from the roots is
very important for world as due to carbon increase in atmosphere, earth's climate is changing
drastically. The above report include 2050 net zero goals pledge taken by different countries and
described its key significance and its impact on EDF energy. Also this report have considered
various issue in fulfilling target as well as forecast of various events.
