Edmund Oliver is the chief executive officer for the green belt movement. Edmund was among
the founding members of this movement which was aimed at promoting environmental
conservation. I met Oliver back in the year 2009 during an event organized by the United
Nations to focus on matters regarding environmental conservation. Edmund had been appointed
to head the millennium Development Goals group in which he chaired different groups of
individuals who comprised business and political people among others. In the course of the
meeting, I was able to interact with Edmund and hence he offered me an opportunity to serve in
the greenbelt movement as a volunteer. While executing our duties, I was able to learn that
Edmund was a trustee of the Texas forest environmental education trust. His appointment was
not a surprise since he had been able to excel significantly as compared to the other stakeholders.
Edmund had a Ph.D. In anatomy, a master's degree in biological sciences and an undergraduate
degree in Biology all from Harvard University.
While working for the green belt movement Edmund acted as the team leader of every activity
carried out in different parts of the world. During a tree planting exercise, we experienced a wide
range of resistance from a politician who participated in the timber selling. The green belt
movement team was attacked by armed men where our team leader was seriously injured. After a
long stay in the hospital, Edmund resumed his duties and organized a meeting with the

government in which he forgave the attackers. During the 2010-2011 UN meeting, Edmund was
appointed as the united nation massager for peace. In the course of his studies, Edmund Oliver
had also made significant progress which saw him rise to different leadership positions. While
taking his undergraduate degree he was the chair to the department of veterinary Anatomy at
Harvard University.
Edmund played a big role in my mentorship, he offered different forms of support most
significant allowing me to join the greenbelt movement as a youth volunteer. Were it not for his
support I would not have joined the organization taking into consideration the high levels of
corruption in our country. Having not taken any undergraduate degree after my high school
education, Edmund offered me a scholarship through the greenbelt movement to pursue a degree
in environmental conservation. Edmund changed my perception of the care that we should offer
to the environment through the various tree planting activities that we conducted. Despite him
being a senior official in the movement Edmund was so humble, he was able to interact freely
with other junior officers and participated in different tree-planting exercises carried out in
different countries.
The various academic degrees awarded to Edmund motivated me to pursue the course on
environmental conservation. While taking this course at Cambridge University I was focused
that one day I would make great achievements and win many awards just like him. It is through
Edmund that I learned the importance of forgiveness, despite him being a man with the power he
chooses not to sue those who attacked him in Congo forest but forgave them. Besides that
Edmund went ahead to seek peace with the opposers of the forest rehabilitation project. This act
was so motivating and hence made him win the 2010-2011 Nobel peace prizes. After my
undergraduate studies, Edmund offered me a permanent job in the movement and appointed me

as the group team leader. In the movement, Edmund has helped me develop some basic
leadership skills through mentorship sessions. In the year 2015, I was able to win the Nobel
peace prize in environmental conservation, all this success in my professional career would not
have been achievable were it not for the support offered to me by Edmund Oliver. I believe is
one of the people with exceptional characteristics of leadership. He is a real reader who works
close to his subordinates to make sure that all activities within the organization are well done. It
takes a leader many efforts to interact with all his/her subordinates to have a common goal. He is
my great mentor because his actions reflect the true picture of what a leader needs to do to set an
example to other staff of the organization. One thing I love about Edmund Oliver is that he likes
working closes with all members and share experiences with all subordinates from all levels. I
aspire to be like him especially when I will be in charge of any organization or group of people.
I think his character is liked by many people and most of them aspire to be like him. One thing I
will not forget is how Edmund Oliver taught me a real-life lesson. It was on Monday morning
when I visited him in his office. I need to know more about the green belt movement. He did
only paid attention to me, but also explained to me step by what involves the green belt
movement. I never expected to get such kind of attention from such a high ranked member of
the organization. He went ahead and motivated me on the importance of treating everyone with
respect. I remember one quote he told me; “...respect is simple but key human virtue...try to
practice it all the time”. This is one of the words and experiences with Edmund Oliver which will
never fade in my mind. I consider it as one of my mentors because I have learned so many real-
life lessons on how to interact and treat other people not only in the organization but also in all
daily interactions. I wish to be like Edmund Oliver in all my leadership. I noticed that he loved
everyone and was a friend to everyone in the organization. This portrays the best character a

of the most educated people in the world, he does not show off or neglect other subordinates.
