Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment comprises two parts: a film review of the documentary 'Poor Kids' and an analysis of an article concerning Detroit students suing the state over inadequate education. The first part requires an examination of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, identifying unmet needs of children from low-income families featured in the documentary, providing specific examples. It also explores the relevance of Maslow's hierarchy in education and the impact of unmet needs on student performance. The second part involves listing the grievances of the Detroit students as presented in the article, highlighting issues such as inadequate education standards, underfunded schools, unhealthy environments, and denial of fundamental rights. The assignment underscores the challenges faced by students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the impact of social and economic factors on their education, and the importance of addressing these issues to ensure academic success and equitable opportunities.

Running head: FILM AND ARTICLE REVIEW
ASSIGNMENT A
1. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the three needs that is not met with for the
children Kyle and Tyler are the physiological needs every person deserves to get. According
to Kyle and Tyler, they don’t receive three meals a day and most of the time, they starve.
Kyle is always hungry and she tries to take away her attention from food to somewhere else
so that she does not have to bear the pain of hunger anymore. According to Tyler, he does
not get proper nutritious food all the time, so whatever they get, they have to manage with
it. Safety needs is another issue with these children as they do not have adequate money to
avail transport and they walk down the town to get things done. Self- actualization needs is
also not fulfilled in case of these children as, according to Kyle, she wanted to travel the
whole world but her economic instability would not support it.
2. Maslow’s hierarchy is relevant in the field of education because each learners have different
goals, desires, needs and preferences. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is important for intrinsic
and extrinsic motivation of the students from the tutors or mentors where they are
motivated holistically to achieve academic goals.
3. Brittany used to get bullied in middle school because she belongs to an economically poor
family. She was treated in an unfair manner due to economic disparity which shows the
classist mentality of the young generation of America. She was not able to concentrate in
her studies and got poor grades as she was psychologically crushed due to her repeated
bullying in school. Children such as Brittany are vulnerable and fall prey to such bullies and
harassers and end up having a poor performance in academics.
ASSIGNMENT B
According to the article “Students in Detroit are suing the state because they weren’t taught to
read”, some basic grievances of the students include that they do not receive proper education at all
in the school premises. The education standard is very inferior and underfunded. Due to such

reasons, the students have been avoiding coming to school at all. The school is also not properly
maintained as most of the rooms and accessories are infected by vermins. Therefore, it can be said
that the school have unhealthy atmosphere which is not fit for the students to go there and study.
The schools have been denying the coloured and ethnically diverse students the basic fundamental
rights of literacy which is a grave matter. All the students in the respective school performs poorly in
all spheres and do not have means to develop themselves. The status quo is highly maintained in
such school and educational unfairness is practiced in the school rampantly. Such situations have led
to a complete hamper of academic achievement in the school among the students. The education in
such area needs to be of enhanced quality and efficiency, not only “basic literacy” but an all
comprehensive and holistic approach to education and literacy must be provided to students of
Detroit.
