Introduction
General education courses in school, college or a university are essential to complete
the minimum requirements of the general education. The same provide a wide umbrella of
learning opportunities in the form of varied range of subjects, training or a combination of
both. The thesis statement of the following work is that “for learners to prepare adequately to
do well in the chosen stream of their career, they need to have a set of applied, relevant and
practical curriculum which develops their core skills.” The work is aimed to evaluate the
skills learned by the learners through the subjects namely the writing, math, science, history,
psychology, and statistics.
Critical analysis and logical thinking
It is significant to note that the general education courses are comprised of wide range
of cross-section of subjects which facilitates building a broad base of knowledge among the
learners. One of the prime skills necessitated in the modern global workplace is the logical
skills (Cottrell, 2017). The courses that are designed taking into account the subjects namely
the science, statistics and mathematics, enhance the logical thinking capacity of the learners.
The ability to critical think and analyze a situation enables a professional at workplace to
resist the emotional and gut impulses, and therefore rather evaluates a situation in light of
multiple interpretations and available information. Thus, critical thinking skills play a
fundamental role in the shaping of a professional.
Emotional intelligence through understanding of psychology
Another prime capability that is required at the workplace is the ability to understand
and perceive the thoughts of seniors and subordinates in the form of highly developed
emotional quotient (Relojo, Pilao & Dela Rosa, 2015). The subjects like psychology and
sociology builds a greater level of understanding for the seniors and subordinates. The strong
understanding of the behavior facilitates an individual at workplace to be a stronger team
player by reacting more objectively and productively towards the behavior of the team
members.
Communication skills
Further argument in the favor of the needs to gain the skills through general education
courses are in the form of development of sound spoken and written communication skills.
With the wide knowledge base, it is necessary to be able to share the information in an

efficient and comprehensive manner (Chilver, 2016). The language based courses comprise
of the exercises such as the email writing, report writing, memo drafting and likewise, which
typically teach an individual to organize and present their thoughts in a persuasive manner to
carry into business communications within a workplace.

Lastly to state the skills acquired while studying the subjects like history enables a
leaner with a wide understanding of the internal and external environment, thereby inducing
the acceptance of diverse forms of culture. This further aids in the collaboration, motivation
and confidence of the employees at workplace. It can be additionally stated that prime need
of the employment in the event of globalization is the global mindset employees and
culturally diverse teams (Ang & Van Dyne, 2015). Thus, the comprehensive study of the
subjects like history inculcates the ability of interdisciplinary research and analysis
among the individuals thereby leading to efficient assessment of
organizational situations in all-inclusive manner.
