2EFFECTIVE BUSINESS COMMUNICATION
Introduction
Effective business communication is very important for an overall success of not only
any business or organisation but also for the success of any person in any field. Good
business communications among the organisational members or the customers is of utmost
importance for any businessman to prosper in the business (Santos, Pache & Birkholz, 2015).
There are a total of ten different topics that have been explained by means of ten weeks notes
in effective business communication. In this essay I shall be providing a brief discussion of
what I have learnt from the unit about the different concepts of business communications.
With the same, I shall be elaborating on how I believe that my learnings could be applied in
my future career goals. I shall be selecting choosing a particular concept, i.e., of ethical
communication skill that I have learnt from week one. Furthermore, in this essay, I shall also
be defining this concept and then explaining why it is important to me in my present field of
work. Moreover, based on my discussions and explanations of this concept, I would also
provide a literature review of it about the importance of this concept within today’s working
environment. Lastly, I shall be discussing on how this concept is essential for my future
career aspirations within the timeframe of the coming 5 years. Along with that, I shall also be
shedding light on how I think this skill would help me in meeting my career related goals.
Identification and the explanation of the weekly concept in terms of work activities
The concept from week one is of ethical communication. It is to note that ethical
communication is very essential for each types of communication, whether it be professional
or personal. There are a total of five kinds of ethical guidelines which has been discussed as
clear, logical, honest, respectful and democratic. Communication should be clear in any
business operation in order to ensure that no person is finding it difficult to interpret the
actual message. It should be presented in logical manner and with the same, should be honest

and true enough so that the message does not mislead any individual into believing something
that is completely different or something else. With the same, communication should be
made in respectful manner as well as it is always said that “a good form is communication is
one where the listener is respected”. Hence, ethical communication is essential for the sender
to build a reliable and credible bonding or relationship with the other person involved in the
business. The second concept from week two is that of Kinesics. It is to state that Kinesics is
a kind of non-verbal communication that is done by means of body movements. It include
facial expressions, hand gestures, body language etc. In this type of communication, body
movements are the way that determines what an individual is trying to communicate. Eye
movement is also a form of kinesics as because of the fact that by means of eye movements,
messages are exchanges in between two individuals. Furthermore, touch is another kind of
kinesics communication. The several different kind of touch define the relation in between
the people. Likewise, there are several types of kinesics communication that assist an
individual in communication with one another in place of words. This is useful in situation
where there are many people and a silent message needs to be passed from one individual to
another, mostly without the knowledge of other people. Moreover, the concept of week three
is that of the difference in between written and verbal business communication. These are the
two types of communication where the verbal communication is comparatively more short-
lived than the written one. Written form of communication is presented by means of written
document that stays for a long period of time as it is. While the verbal communication could
forgotten within some hours and is most often misinterpreted until and unless it is recorded.
Notwithstanding this fact, both the types of communication is essential because of the
benefits that both of them hold.
The concept from week four is of academic writing. This concept is important
especially for the student as by means of this they are able to understand the different things

that are learned by them in their course time as well as to get good grades on them. It is to
note that academic writing skill helps the learners to gain an insight knowledge and deeper
understanding of the various concepts which are learnt by them in their class so as to apply
them in their practical life. Furthermore, reflective writing is the concept of week five. It is to
mention that reflective writing is a type of academic writing that is often determined as the
way where the pupils reflect upon their ideas or their course which they have learnt and then
related those things with their real life scenarios. It helps the learners in understanding
whether or not the utilisation of the concepts or their behaviour is really effective in their own
life. The concept from week six is that of communication apprehension. It is the fear or the
anxiety which exists among the people where are in the process of communicating with
anyone. It could be overcome in many ways such as by preparing speech earlier and deciding
what and when to say or by thinking about the audience and practising the speech or by
developing a contingency plan that would help in case if anything goes wrong. However, it is
to note that it is very essential to overcome communication apprehension because often it
resists the individuals from getting connected with others and making progress in their life. It
is a barrier to their successful life.
Furthermore, the concept from week eight is organisational communication.
Organisational communication is the manner in which the organisation communicates with
the external and the internal audiences. The internal organisational communication refers to
way in which the organisation communicates with the employees (people who exist within
the very organisation). They do so by means of face to face interaction, telephonic
conversation, sending e-mails or by using any other mode of written communication. On the
other hand, the external organisational communication is the way in which they
communicates with the customers (the ones outside the organisational boundaries). It is done
by means of enhancing brand image, making advertisements and promoting the components

and products of the organisation. However, the concept from week ten is of interpersonal
communication. It is the way by means of which a person communicates with the other
person and exchanges opinions, thoughts, feelings, view-points and information on a specific
topic or subject by the helps of non-verbal and verbal communication skills. It is a direct
form of communication which takes palace when people are present in a location where they
have to communicate face to face. With the same, it is more useful when the individuals need
to communicate a direct and important message which needs immediate action or persuasion
on the part of the sender. All these ten concepts are very helpful in making effective business
communication if they are maintained in effective manner.
Literature Review
Human being, being the social creatures would always undergoes with interaction in
between the human in social life. Such interaction is known to be communication (Walther et
al., 2015). Bruce Tuckman has developed the model of group development in the year 1965.
Earlier, this model had a total of four stages and they were that of forming, storming,
norming and performing (Perry, Karney & Spencer, 2013). All these stages were very
beneficial in the execution if any group, depending on their potential of performing a
particular project, comes up with some useful solutions that seem to be of productive nature.
As per Yasir and Majid (2013), the very first stage of “forming” is the stage where the group
is formed by choosing the people who might have different opinions, view-points, culture and
thoughts. Humphrey and Aime (2014) further state that the “People in this stage would try to
form vertical and horizontal relationships which might not be successful as such”. With the
same, people accept the goals and starts to make plan which are independent in nature since
the group members do not form any bond with one another. However, the second stage of
“storming” is the stage where the group members starts trusting one another and bond is
formed among them in order to start the work together. At this stage, the group leader

determines the task that are to be done by the group along with the related goals with the
view-points of one another. However, it is also to note that it is the stage where the most
clashed and disputes take place (Taylor & Kent, 2014). The next stage is that of “norming”.
In this stage, the members of the groups solve all their disputes and then try to work
collaboratively by building strong relationship with one another in order to make the project a
success. As per Zaman (2017), in this stage, the group members starts to respect one
another’s ideas and thoughts. The last stage of “performing” is the stage where these
members keep all their focus on the task and work together to reach their objectives and goal
(Pelegrini & Marie Burns, 2014). It exhibits a very high level of success and productivity that
is required in the completion of the project. However, it is also to note that later, another
stage was also added in this process and that is of “adjourning” (Sullivan et al., 2013).
Application of the concepts in the future career aspirations
The two chosen concepts of communication which will help me in becoming a
successful business man or manager in the future is that of organisational communication and
of ethical communication. Both these communication skills are interrelated with one another.
I need to establish a very strong and concrete form of communication where I could be able
to send my message clearly to the ones within and outside my organisation in order to
effectively conduct the business (Slack, Corlett & Morris, 2015). I would have to make sure
that my employees are able to understand the things that I need from them and in turn I would
take the feedback of my employees regarding their issues so that I can help them out. In the
same manner, I need to establish a good relationship and bond with the outside audience, the
customers and ensure that my brand image is good in the market. For both of these things to
occur productively I have to be trustworthy and ethical in my way of communicating with
them.
