INTRODUCTION
In health and social care, there are the various practices in context to the patient care and social
support (McCorry, L.K. and Mason, J., 2020). Which done by the proper consideration of health
and social care principles. So According to the health care standards there are various practices
which can be accomplish with effective communication. Such as in order to give respect,
emotional support to the patient that is important to use communication skills. In this report
brief evaluation of effective communication skills importance is done in context to the health
and social care practices, principles.
Effective communication
Effective communication is the method of transforming and exchanging of the information or
ideas, between two person or in the group. In a way which can make the clear understanding of
conversation ( World Health Organization, 2018). The characteristics of the effective
communication is involving various important factors which should be possess by the staff of
health and social care, such as individual should reflect respect and courtesy through their
communication, it should be reliable according to the receivers, attitude and language. Message
should be complete, correct and clear. Along with these characteristics there are some skills
which should be possess by the individuals to make effective communication. Such skills are
listening, observation, understanding, emotional intelligence, clarity , confidence, respects for
others in communication style, Good in nonverbal communication ( Wallerstein, N., Duran, B.,
O 2017).

Importance of communication in health and social care
In the UK there are the various principles and policies related to the effective communication
such as the NHS England assessable information and communication policy. On the basis of
that policy effective information and communication is important element of the patients centre
care. In context to the patient effective care and to help them for making inform choices of
interventions and treatments, it is important to develop assessable information by the help of
written communication, which further helps to make effective and accessible verbal

the help of effective communication ( National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and
Medicine, 2017).
Proper understanding of patient condition and measurement of improvement- In context to
the patient care and management the first care taker are nurses, who can consider as the primary
caregiver, they are also known as the primary line of communication, who can effectively
analyze and understand the patient condition. Then they inform this to the second team for
further care. Nurses with the good listening and observation skills, play important role in the
measurement of patient progress and then further pass it to the other team for procedure
( National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2020).
Play important role and patients emotional state and the understanding- as the nurses
invest huge time with the patient and they had higher personal communication, which helps the
nurse to understand patient Condition and give more effective individual level of emotional care.
The patient understanding practices of nurses helps the patient to reduce physical and
emotional distress. Along with this the long term communication helps to use the collected
information at the right place of care, such as in the selection of right treatment and
interventions.
Identification of patient needs- Another then the medical needs there are some more
affecting personal needs of the patient, such special diet plan, religious belief so by the help of
effective communication nurses can coordinate with other sporting care taker for informing
them regarding patinte needs. So that best quality of care is can be provided to the service
users.
Advocating for patient- On the basis of American nurses Association, patient advocacy is
comprises of effective communication and relationship of the patient and nurses. Nurses are
reducing the communication gap of patient and professional, with help of their effective
communication and work as the informer of patient decisions and choices related to the care
practices and treatments ( Morley, L. and Cashell, A., 2017).

Relationship between the effective communication and principles of care
Effective communication in context to health and social care practices is can be done or develop
by the help of communication theories. Four types of communication theories which helps to
understand the relationship between effective communication and principle of care.
Behaviour theory- this year is the type of psychological approach which involves the,
consideration psychological behaviour as a key elements of communication it can also be
considered as an expressive communication without any verbal and return approach by the help
of expression and reaction to certain questions and activities. According to this theory health and
social care stuff how to involve behaviour understanding skills in order to make an effective
communication with the patient who cannot speak or don’t want to speak ( Aceto, G., Persico, V.
and Pescapé, A., 2020).
Cognitive theory – This theory is given by the Albert Bandura why focusing on the two factors
society and brain. According to these theory communication is can be done by presenting the
social practices or mind influencing presentation. Which can be observe by the receiver and
transmitted to their brain in the form of information. In context to the health and social care
practices mist of the patient come with Learning and communication disabilities, an they can
learn and communicate social cognitive approaches ( Arnold, E.C. and Boggs, K.U., 2019).
Humanistic theory This theory is focus on the helpful psychology of the humans, according
to this person with the issues should we supported with the best care practices and respect. There
is the need of Humanistic communication according to which each and every person have make
right decision at the emergency without waiting for verbal communication. This process of the
care and communication should be done with dignity and honour.
Psychoanalytic theory- This is the type of communication theory according to which the
personality and behaviour is can be analyse by evaluating of three factors such, id, ego and
superego. So this can be a way of effective communication in context to mental health patients,
under which the behavior of the patient is can use to communicate with them ( Pavli, A. and
Maltezou, H., 2017).
Analysis of potential barriers in health and social care
in the health and social care profession professional staff have to conduct various treatment and
intervention activities in context to the specific health situation of person. Most of the time

professional have to face diffrent barriers between the health care procedures. Which can be
manage by the effective communication.
Challenges with care giver communication - Some time due to the mental stress and mental
illness patient not get ready to communicate and take decisions for care and treatment. Due to
which care procedure become slow. And patient don’t even ready to talk.
Abnormal behaviour of patients - patients within the health and social care practices comes
with the different issues and during the care practices caregiver face difficulties of patient
abnormal behaviour. Such not taking there medication, not get ready to take their diet and try to
make harmful actions ( World Health Organization, 2019).
Anxious and worried behaviour of patient- Sometime patient with the mental trauma or
stress, make difficult for staff, by not letting any one to touch them. They get afraid and don’t
want come in context with any one, due to which this will become difficult to give proper
treatment.
Lack of education in patient family- Lack of the Healthcare education among the patient
family can cause various difficulties in context to the patient care plan. Such as they cannot make
the right decision of patient care and their behaviour ( Abuse, S., 2020).
Communication techniques use to overcome the barriers
Listening- listening is the communication technique which helps to make patient comfortable
and satisfy. Nurses can use their listening skills while talking to the patient which can help
overcome the barriers of communication and abnormal behaviour.
Attention- along with the listening and other important technique of the communication is
giving proper attention to the patient in each level of care and treatment.
Advice - giving proper advice to the family and patient can make them stronger to take
treatments.
Educate - the communication skills of the staff can use to educate the patient and their family
related to the health care plan and practices by the help of which right measures can be taken.
Motivation is another communication technique for removing the barriers ( Tate, P. and Frame,
F., 2019).

From the ab study it has been concluded that effective communication is involving different
types of characteristics and skills which has to be possessed by the health care professionals and
staff in order to make effective health and social care practices by following each standards and
principles. Because organisation is having some rules and principles regarding patient care,
according to which patient should be properly informed about the health care procedures and
their condition, patients should be properly get educated in terms of hygiene and health
management, patient should be treated with respect and emotional support. So for doing all these
activities and practices of Health and social care effective communication is important because
that is the key way accomplished all these responsibilities of Healthcare professionals. That is
communication skills which helps to manage the different situation of Healthcare practices.
