Introduction
Effective communication is not only important in an organization. It is important in every aspect
of life. Everything people do on a daily basis requires the need of effective communication skills.
When a management is running an organization, effective communication skills is of utmost
importance. All the information that is transferred from the management to the employees should
be clear and understandable. Any glitch in the information can hamper the productivity of the
organization.
In this study, there have been many things discussed about effective communication in a
workplace. Effective communication is an important quality needs to be present in management
operations to efficiently manage all the works and functions as well as business objectives set
before. Every company uses a single type of communication method to pass on the information
from the higher level to the lower level. I had the opportunity to work in the management of
Tesco and learn about the different roles effective communication plays in the management. All
the information gathered will be complied in this assignment.

Discuss the role of effective communication within management.
In order to lead others in an organization, effective communication is very important. Managers
should possess good communication. The lack of reliability among the managers decreases the
work quality of the employees. The managers who possess good communication skills have
enough credibility to solve problems. Communication is an essential skill, which helps the
managers and the management in the international and domestic workplace (Austin and
Pinkleton, 2015).
Diversity in workplace is increasing day by day in every organization in the world. The
management in each company has to follow a particular method of communication, so that all
the information reaches the employees in a clear and understandable format. The employees
should also have good verbal and written communication skills so that they understand the
information and rules in the right format. Good written and verbal communication among the
employees will help them climb the corporate ladder with ease. An organization that works well
has an effective communication format between the management and its employees (Quirke,
2017). While working in the management department of Tesco, I have understood the
importance of communication within the business organisation. In Tesco, when one employee
has to be informed with information verbal communication is used. When the company requires
passing on some important information to many people web communication is used. The role of
effective communication in the management is given below:
Better Relations Among the Employees
The managers who are good in their working domain understand that importance to build
alliances among all the different departments present in an organization. Good
communication skills are vital as it breaks down communication barrier between the
employees and the management (Kotler, 2015). This helps in the promotion of a
collaborative atmosphere in which the company can thrive better. Different management can
adopt different style of communication in order to achieve the desired results.
Increase in Productivity

The key player in any organization is the management. All the information regarding work and
other things are passed on from the management to the employees. In such a scenario if the
communication is not clear and understandable, then a major crisis may arise. The productivity
efforts of a certain company depend hugely upon the management. The management should
clearly articulate the plans and strategies in order to make the employees understand what the
company wants from them. Each employee should very well understand his or her individual
responsibilities. It is that each employee get clear idea about their individual responsibilities
directed by the management.
Each task should be given equal importance. This helps in the gain in productivity. In case the
management is not able to communicate effectively, the employees might lose interest in their
work and become complacent (Verzuh, 2015).
Impact of Globalization
In the international workplace today, linguistic and cross-cultural teams consisting of employees
are becoming very common. In this changing scenario, the management come up with devised
strategies of communication so that they can communicate with the multilingual employees
present in the organization (Rahim, 2017).When the management is trying to make the
employees understand what the goals of the organization are, they must use different languages
so that the employees dont feel left out.
The Skills of Problem Solving
The skills of problem solving and effective communication are the two sides of a same coin. The
employees working in a particular organization look up to the management when they are going
through some problems or crisis. Management lacking discretion often cannot solve the
problems of the employees with ease. This results into decrease of trust among the employees.
When the management cannot solve the problems of the employees, they lose trust in the
management (Haimes, 2015). The management using effective communication methods should
solve the conflicts among the employees, abuse issues and issues regarding declining
performance.
The Relation Between Different Generations
5

In an organization, employees may be of different age groups. In other words, there may be
generation gap between the different employees. The management must possess great
communication skills to cater to the needs of the people of different age groups working in the
organization. The management as this creates communication gap among the employees and the
management must avoid blanket stereotypes (Heagney, 2016). The management needs to give
much emphasis to the communication approach in order to minimise the gap in between the
employees and employers. When I was working with Tesco, I came across people from different
age group. I did not have the same attitude with everyone. Respecting everyone in the
organization is very important.
The company had an effective method of communication, which helped all the employees to
work between and produce quality results. Effective communication helps in the growth of the
organization. Good communication Skill from the management helps to solve the problems the
employees go through on the daily basis.

Analyse the Impact of different methods of communication within a business and
managerial context.
The general development of any organization effective communication is considered as an
essential part. This is why it helps the manager to perform some of the basic functions such as
management-planning, motivating and controlling the employees and organizing. The business
activity makes the demand of the communication skill; it should be either oral or written. Thus it
can be considered as a matter of fact that an effective communication helps to build a block of an
organisation. There are different types of communication methods, which can be used within a
business; they are inter-personal communication, intra personal communication method, and
group communication, crucial conversation, face to face communication method, written
communication method, verbal communication, web communication method, non-verbal
communication and storytelling method (Cascio, 2018). The time when I was working in Tesco
there were few particular methods, which the management team to follow. They are discussed
below.
Verbal Communication:
The method of verbal communication is considered as one of the most effective type of
communication in particular. There are different types of mediums to make the communication
done; those mediums are either by phone or in person. Oral is the basic medium of the message.
This time, the sender (the manager) usually conveys the message to the receiver (the respected
employee) over the phone (Hair et al., 2015). While we were working in Tesco the general thing
was the both the employee and the manager or the leader of this particular business organisation
had any message to give to each other, most of the time they used to use this method.
Web Communication:
Each message can be passed through different kind of ways. The web communication method is
usually considered at those times, when the business organisation has any kind important and
urgent message to give then they can easily use the company website to pass the message to their
employees. This can be same for the employees as well. This particular method can be used for
different type of purpose. The employees who previously worked in the company they can write

their working experience on the website of the company. This can be a meaningful message to
those employees who are about to come to the company, the upcoming employees of a business
organisation be able to have a set of idea about the work flow and the operational system of the
company named Tesco (Stadtler, 2015).
Face to face Communication:
This particular method of communication is considered as one of the most effective way of
communication. The message one sender wants to give to receiver is conveyed in the best
possible way through this method. The reason after this is the manager will be able to make the
employee understand in his/her best way. During the time when I was working in Tesco there
were scenario’s like when any employee had problems in the work place, then that employee can
have one to one communication with the manager. In any business organisation at times single
information is there for a single employee, then also the manager can call the employee and give
the message.
Group Communication:
A group of people when communicates it is considered as a form of group communication. The
departments of each organisation works as a group whenever the organisation has to give a
message to an amount of people, they gather the particular group they want and they do the
gathering of the group and they can provide the message (Sekaran and Bougie, 2016). The group
communication has a huge impact to the cases of solving the organisational problems. In the
business organisation Tesco they have a group meeting in the starting of each month, so that
each employee have the track on the quality of the work they are providing to the organisation.
Written Communication:
The written communication method is actually the printed messages. There are various types of
the written communication that include proposals, mails, letters, operating policies and training
manuals and so on. Apart from this, it can also be in different type of forms such as it can be
printed on paper, it can also appear on screen, or can be hand written. In the business
organisation named Tesco there were few information, for which they used to give printed notice

on the board (Helfat and Peteraf, 2015). Through this written communication method the
employees get to know about that information which is important to them.
