INTRODUCTION
Business communication is referred to the way of interaction which is mainly concerned
with business activities. Business communication can either be external or internal and helps in
improving the work performing capability of employees (Adekola and Sergi, 2016). This
assignment is prepared in context with Mr Fishy which is a London based restaurant offering
chips and fish to their customers. This assignment will cover about communication practice of
myself and staff by discussion of challenges to communication and strategies to overcome them.
Theories of organisational communication are discussed in context with the working staff of Mr
Fishy.
LITERATURE REVIEW
According to the opinions of Masjedi, Y., 2019, business communication is the
procedure to share information among individuals both outside and within the company. An
appropriate communication benefits a company in avoiding cultural differences and in-
similarities. As per Sharma, P., 2019, A communication can be considered as business
communication if it is target oriented, factual, practical and represented in a clear or concise
manner. In accordance with the opinion of Sonnerberg, F., 2019, barriers in effective
communication can take place due to poor listening habits of employees and political warfare to
attain personal gains etc. These barriers can be resolved with strategies like Avoiding Jargon,
adoption of open communication and accepting cultural differences.
ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
Evaluation of communication practices of staff and yourself by discussing barriers to
communication and strategies to overcome it
There are different barriers which can be faced by a firm due to inappropriate
communication. In case of Mr Fishy, main barriers and challenges to effective communication
are differences in perception, cultural differences and more reliability on technology (Argenti,

2017). To overcome these barriers, strategies such as avoidance of slang and jargon, appreciating
cultural difference and two way communication are adopted. In context with these aspects, some
communication practices are adopted in organisation which are evaluated below:
Communication practices of staff members:
Using communication tools: To make internal communication strong, staff of Mr Fishy
have decided to adopt right communication tools so that they can interact with one
another in a proper manner. For example, video chat, cloud technology, group chats,
group meetings etc., but relying on these tools can reduce face to face interaction among
employees.
Creation of dynamic working environment: Appropriate working environment will
help the employees in understanding each other in supportive manner. Staff of company
has decided to work in a coordinated manner to sustain collaborative working
environment. If workplace will not have dynamic environment to work, employees will
feel isolated which will reduce the overall productivity of restaurant (Bovée, Thill and
Raina, 2016).
Communication practices of myself:
Encourage collaboration: To resolve the problems of communication at my workplace,
I have decided to encourage collaboration among the employees. I am planning to do it
by initiating weekly activities and outings. This will help me to bond with employees in
a robust manner due to which their indifferences will resolve with me in a proper way.
Actively listen: This is another communication practice which is adopted my me. I will
try to listen the words of staff members and other employees in a sincere manner. This
will help me to understand their opinion for a decision in a proper manner. By this, each
employee will feel comfortable in sharing their thoughts with me (Chan and Lai, 2017).
Theories of organisational communication relevant to staff of concerned firm
There are different kind of theories linked with organisational communication which are
mentioned below:
Critical theory: As per this theory, having conflicts within a business firm is a common
thing. In case of Mr Fishy, employees of restaurant resists their departments, colleague
and managers to gain high influence. In this theory, communication plays a vital role in
solving the conflicts among employees of concerned restaurant, prevent problem between

group of people and motivate them to attain their unified goals (Hartley and Chatterton,
2015). By communicating properly, all the misunderstandings among workforce and
management can be resolved properly.
Information theory: This theory of communication is related with the manner in which
an information is passed on with few mistakes. In case of concerned restaurant,
communication theory emphasize on the ways to fix information and messages so that
they can not be changed while travelling from one person to another. This will help the
employees in receiving accurate information due to which they will be able to perform
work in a proper way.
Purpose and principles of different forms of communication
The principles and purposes associated with varying form of organisational
communication are mentioned below:
Purpose of organisational communication: With the help of organisational communication,
employees of a company became closer to one another. There are different purposes of
organisational communication which are mentioned below in context with Mr Fishy:
Flow of information: This is the main purpose of organisational communication. To
attain high productivity, it is essential for the employees to pass on information from top
to bottom and vice versa through SMS, verbal chats, Emails, cloud computing, voice
messages etc. To attain organisational objectives, staff of company is needed to get
informed about every activity. Without different forms of communications such as
written and oral communication, staff of Mr Fishy will not be able to pass information in
efficient manner (Holmes and Parker, 2017).
Preparing people to accept change: Appropriate communication is a vital tool for
business owner of Mr Fishy to bring any changes in their procedures and policies of
restaurant. With the help of different kind of communication like seminars, orientations,
meetings, files, documents, SMS, video calls and web conferencing communication, staff
members of company can be acknowledge about new changes within workplace. This
will help the employees to understand and adopt those changes for the betterment of
organisation.
Principles of different forms of communication: There are some principles of organisational
communication which are stated beneath:

Striving for clarity: It is an important principle of organisational communication.
Different forms of organisational communication are used to pass on a clear and concise
messages (Lauring and Klitmøller, 2017). There are situations in which sender is not
able to share a clear message with the receiver by using a communication method. In that
situation different forms of communication are used such as text message, video call etc.
so that required information can be understood by receiver in a clear manner.
Selecting more appropriate medium: Main principle behind using different forms of
communication in an organisation is to attain a specific target. In case of Mr Fishy, if
employees of company received a mail from management but unable to understand it,
Manager of company can conduct a seminar or send a video message so that staff can
understand the information of mail in a proper manner.
Principles of effective communication to enhance business practice
Effective communication is a defined as a medium to exchange thoughts, ideas,
knowledge and information so that appropriate interaction can take place between both sender
and receivers. There are several principles of effective communication which will help Mr Fishy
in increasing their business practices. These principles are stated below:
Principle of integration: This principle states that with the help of effective
communication, efforts of employees can be integrated towards the attainment of
business objectives. If communication will not exist between staff members of Mr Fishy,
it will be impossible for them to work in an integrated manner (Mautner and Rainer,
2017). With the usage of this principle, employees will work in cooperation due to which
overall productivity will increase. This will impact the revenues of company in positive
way.
Principle of attention: It is another principle of communication which states that a
communicated message must be able to gain the attention of receivers. If sent information
is not able to receive attention of employees in Mr Fishy, this can results in
mismanagement of work. Due to this, productivity of restaurant in serving customers can
reduce. Hence, this principle states that an information or message must be listen with
full attention so that maximum facts can be acknowledged from that information. It will
helps in improving overall productivity of company which will leads to business
enhancement (Quintanilla and Wahl, 2018).

CONCLUSION
From above mentioned report, it has been concluded that communication plays an
important role in earning high profits in business. There are different communication practices
like actively listening, adopting right communication tools etc. by which barriers to
communication can be avoided in a proper way. There exist various theories of communications
like information and critical theory which defines the role of communication in removing
conflict at workplace. Different purposes and principles of communication are information flow
and preparing people to adapt change etc which benefits in increasing overall effectiveness of
company.
