INTRODUCTION
Communication is integral and vital element of all the activities and functions and this is why it is important that communication
remains free from any barrier which affect quality of the communication.
Common challenges and barriers to effective communication
Language
Language is most important barrier in
communication. This is because language of
people in which they speak differs from one
country to another and one culture to another. This
is biggest barrier in communication more
specifically in international communication. This is
because people cannot understand what they are
being said. Along with language accents which are
used also create difficulty in understanding.
Psychological Barriers
This is another barrier in
communication and this is completely
based on perceptions and psychology
of individuals and groups who are
involved in the process of
communication. This involves
prejudices and difference in view
points. Psychological barriers also
involve phobia, depression, speech
disorder and stage fear.
Physical Barriers
This barrier means barrier created
because of factors which are
noise, faulty equipments, closed
doors etc. Important element in
such type of barriers is that these
are very obvious barriers and
most of them are removable in
principle at least.
Strategies for overcoming communication barriers
Remaining aware of cultural difference
This is very important that while
communicating with someone from another
culture individual is aware of the cultural
difference. This will help in removing barriers
which they are aware of during
communication. This involves various things
along with language, gestures and postures also
differ on the basis of culture and awareness of
them will help in communicating effectively.
Avoid Slang
Slangs are those words and
language which are based on
individual using them. Slangs differ
on the basis of culture and
generation. People from different
culture or generation might not be
able to understand what is being
said through slangs and this is why
it is important that slangs are
avoided.
Communicating only what is needed
This means communicating only which
is needed so this will avoid any
unnecessary confusion and
misunderstanding. In cross culture
communication when unnecessary
communication is made this might add
up in existing challenges of
communication. What is needed means
only which is most important to know
should be communicated.
Cultural influence in communication and negotiation
Orientation of Negotiation
In negotiation culture plays significant role because in some
culture negotiation is to create contract and in some culture
negotiation is to create relationship. This means that way of
negotiation and communication involved in negotiation also
differs on the basis of purpose of negotiation.
Formal or Informal Style
Some culture prefers formal style in negotiation and
communication where other culture prefers informal style of
negotiation and communication. This style is involved in
dressing, way of interaction, speaks etc. this is also an
important influence of culture on communication and
negotiation.
CONCLUSION
From the above discussion it can be concluded that communication barriers are those which affect quality of communication and
this can be removed by proper strategies.
