LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION 1
Introduction
Leadership is a procedure and not importantly a power or a position. Leadership is oriented
towards action and not by virtue of any rank or a title. Leaders are the ones who do the right
things at the right time. In our personal lives, we have become leaders at a point of time by
taking the responsibility of doing a task or work in order to influence others. And the
communication is very important for the effective leadership as it is a procedure of sharing ideas,
information, and feelings. The effective leadership in the various organizations need to know the
way of communication with the employees, investors and customers. The communication skills
are very important in order to become an effective leader (Daft, R. L. 2014). Further, the
communication strategies are given which will help the William who is the CEO of a public
relation firm to communicate effectively as a leader as he noticed that the staff is not happy with
the level of communication from top to bottom.
Communication Strategies for Effective Leadership
The researchers have given various communication strategies in order to become an effective
leader. The communication strategies are as follows (Lawrence, T. 2015):
The effective leaders know very well that when to stop talking and when to start listening
in the various situations like high emotions, sharing of ideas, situations of a team, etc.
The leaders don't ignore the emotional feelings of the employees as it helps in building a
positive relation among the manager and the employees and listening to the ideas of

The effective leaders ask adequate questions from the employees in order to know their
thinking process, and this helps the leader to know the various changes which are
required in order to improve the efficiency. The leaders ask questions in various types of
closed questions, open questions and personal questions (Reber, B. H. 2014).
The leaders create an environment of openness in order to make the employee
comfortable to share their views and doubts. This helps the employees to increase their
efficiency and effectiveness.
The effective leaders give the complete information to the employees about the task and
work so that they should be clear about what they are doing and what is the motive
behind that particular task.
Strategy for William to Communicate Effectively
As the CEO of a public relation firm, William found that the staff is not happy with the level of
communication from top to bottom. The main problems the staff was facing were- the staff was
not told about the motive behind the work like they were asked to do the job, but they were not
being told that what benefit the company will get or the employees will get from that particular
task. The other problem was when the employees came to know about any new project, some of
them already begun working on the projects. As William is not using electronic communications
or conducting meetings regularly so, being an individual, I would like to suggest that William
should start conducting meetings whenever the new projects come are changes are made in the
existing ones. During the meetings, William should discuss the project in detail and should take
the ideas of the staff in order to keep them motivated and enthusiastic. The employees should be
told the motive of the company behind the project and how the employees will get benefited
from the project (Hwang et al., 2015). The regular meetings will help the staff to feel like an

important part of an organization, and they will also become more passionate about the work
(Hackman et al., 2013). Therefore, the strategy will help William to improve the level of
communication from the top to bottom.
Conclusion
It has been observed that the effective communication is very important in order to be an
effective leader. If you are not communicating effectively with the employees, then you are not
doing your job efficiently. It is very important to motivate and encourage the employees to
improve their efficiency and effectiveness in order to get the productive results. This will help
the company to achieve long-term strategic goals and attain the competitive advantage. The
