Effective Planning Increases the Chances of Success
There is an English proverb which states that experience is the best teacher (Buss, 3).
Some have argued that it is wiser to learn from the mistakes of others rather than waiting to
learn from experience (Pierce, 192). We learn various thing from our daily lives. Nature tends
to reward good deeds and punish ill ones (Neisser, 7). Due to this, one is likely to avoid bad
deeds in future to avoid the punitive measures associated with the deeds. On the other hand,
one is more likely to engage in good deeds due to the promise of reward. I have had several
experiences in life that has taught me the great importance of effective planning in increasing
the chances of success. Some of the experiences were good while others were not. These will
be narrated next.
The first experience was failing in high school. During my first year in high school, I
was recording very poor grades. There was even a time that my report card indicated that I
had scored a D in all the subjects. My parents were worried and advised me to improve. Since
I had the desire to perform better, I asked one of the top performers some secrets to perform
highly. The top performer guided me through the process of planning. I started working with
a plan, for instance a plan of the grade that I would want to achieve and a daily plan to help
me achieve the goal. My grades improved and never went down again. This taught me that
effective planning leads to success.

The second experience revolved around sports. During the holidays (when in high
school) we used to organize for some friendly sports competition with some friends from the
neighbourhood. My interest was in the 200M race. At the beginning, I used to perform
poorly. I went online and learnt some ways of becoming better. I learnt that engaging in
regular physical activity would help. I changed my strategy. I started exercising vigorously
many days before the competition. I used a plan where I exercised for at least an hour daily.
During the next tournament, I became second.
The third experience revolves around diet planning. I have always appreciated the
great importance of maintaining good health. Knowing the importance role that diet plays in
shaping health, I visited a dietitian for advice. A healthy diet is helps attain a state of
wellbeing (Csikszentmihalyi, 223). The dietitian advised me on the principles of a healthy
diet and on the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight. I used the advice to plan
my diet and physical activity level. Since then, my weight has always been within the normal
range.
In conclusion, life teaches us some valuable lessons that help us become better. It has
taught me the importance of effective planning in ensuring success. I have learnt this from
various experiences. Some were good while others were not the best. These experiences were
related to high school studies, sports and dieting. Employing effective planning and strategy
increases the chances of succeeding in almost all endeavours.
