INTRODUCTION
Communication is a two way process where a sender send their messages and receiver
receive the same message and provide feedback (Krizanova and et. al., 2019). Communication
skill is one of the most important skill in today's corporate world because companies only gain
high productivity and profitability if they effectively communicate with their customers and
convey their actual offerings to them. It is also essential that the employees of the companies will
also become corporative and communicative for performing their daily task. A effective team
will always have those team members which communicate well with each other and share their
ideas and concepts openly to solve their team issues. The following report covers few models of
communication, discussion of communication skills and advantages and disadvantages of
technology in communication.

Models of communication
Model 1- Aristotle's Model of Communication
It is one of the oldest form of communication model which help to analyse the ways to become
effective communicator (Bachmann and Proust, 2020). According to this communication model,
there are five elements of communication event and they are mentioned below-
 Speaker- It the individual who convey message to others.
 Speech- It is the message which is conveyed by the speaker.
 Occasion- It is the situation or event die to which the communication takes place.
 Target audience- They are the group of individuals who is going to receive the message
given by sender.
 Effect- It consist of the effect that how the message will be taken by received or targeted
audience.
This theory also suggests three elements to improve communication like credibility, ability to
connect and logical argument. One of the biggest disadvantage of this model of communication
is that it does not consider the important role of feedback in communication.
Model 2- Shannon-Weaver model of communication
This model of communication states that the communication occur in five key parts which are
mentioned below-

 Sender- The individual who sends the message.
 Encoding- This is the process of converting the idea of communication into the words or
any other form of communication.
 Channel- This is the medium through which the message travel from one person to other
like TV, radio, mobile phone, e-mail and many others (Metcalfe, 2019).
 Decoding- When message travel from chosen channel to receiver then it is called
decoding process.
 Receiver- This is the individual or a group of individual who receive the message from
sender.
This is the model of communication which introduce the concept and role of noise as a obstacle
within communication process. Noise acts like obstacle for communication process because it
interrupts the message and make it ineffective for receiver to receiver. Noise can be from any
side encoding as well as from decoding.
Model 3- Westley and Maclean model
This is the first model which states the importance of feedback in communication process. On
the other hand, this model also mentioned the importance of environmental and cultural factor
which can influence the communication process (All 8 Models Of Communication, Explained,
2021). Here, the culture, behaviour and attitude of individual can affect the communication
because a aggressive individual can only send message in a aggressive manner and in a rude
manner. Here, receiver send the feedback to sender that he/she get the message. Feedback plays
an important role to analyse whether the receiver receives appropriate message which is actually
conveyed or not (Wilcox, 2019).
A case related to communication effectiveness-
In context of BMI Healthcare institute, their senior management team is planning to introduce a
new app for their healthcare services which will not only help the patients to get effective
medical services online but it also help the staff members to communicate effectively and clear
their doubts within each other effectively regarding any patient and their disease. This plan is
made by executives of the hospitals and they ask their junior consultants that whether they are
happy to implement the plan or not but no clear view and idea of plan is provided to the other
consultants. Hence, due to which many doctors stand against the plan and avoid to use
application for serious matters and they end the plan by saying that they are not ready to

compromise with the health of their patient which can be impact hazardous due to conveying
wrong message because of technical problem. Hence, this is the situation of ineffective
communication where executives did not convey the proper message and did not share complete
message about advantages and benefits of using new well-being app within their hospital. This
issue can be mitigated if junior doctors will provide feedback to executives and ask about
benefits of apps and convey their fear and issue to use new app. This can help them to mitigate
their issue and clear the idea of app.
Discussion of communication skill
Today, communication skill is considered as most important skill for any individual for
developing their personal life as well as professional life. Communication skill is that skill which
help a individual to convey their ideas and thoughts clearly to other individuals in a effective
manner so that opponent will understand the message appropriately (Kerr and et. al., 2020).
Communication does not mean only to convey message properly but it also means that the
message which is conveyed to audience should be attractive and have evidence as well as actual
facts and figures. A individual must target those audience who are interested in the topic which is
conveyed by communicator. For example, in case a general economist convey his ideas and
concepts to a group of students from science background then it is ineffective and he/she is
unable to make them understand about the topic. Hence, in case a economist is conducting the
event then it is essential that only those audience will be invited who is from economics
background.
The communication skill also include to listen appropriately that what audience is asking.
For example, a economist conduct a event and convey his ideas and concepts to his audience and
any one participant of event ask their question about the topic then it is essential for the
economist to listen the question appropriately first to understand it well and them answer the
question. In case the individual did not listen the question appropriately then it mist be possible
that he/she convey wrong message due to which miscommunication will create by sharing wrong
communication to wrong interpret question. There are few of the elements of effective
communication skills which are mentioned below-
 Adopting communication style according to audience- It is essential for a
communicator to adopt those communication style which is preferred by their targeted
audience (Kyaw and et. al., 2019). For example, if the targets audience is serious and

concentrated up to the point then the communicator must convey message in a serious
manner. Whereas if the audience is extrovert and participate to communicate equally with
communicator then the communication style will become more flexible and frankly.
 Confidence- It is also essential element of communication skill which is required to
convey any message to the targeted audience. In case the communicator shows effective
confidence then the opponent individual get impressed by the communicator and the
audience believe whatever communicator says. More than 50% of the effectiveness of
communication is depends upon the confidence of communicator to convey the message.
For example, when a interviewer conducts a interview then he/she test the
communication skill of the candidate and especially the confidence of the candidate upon
which he/she gets the job.
 Volume and clarity- It is essential in communication skill that the individual will convey
a complete and clear message to their audience (Tavakoly Sany and et. al., 2020).
Focusing on volume is also essential while speaking something. Using high pitch volume
is helpful if the communicator want to gain the attention of audience for a particular and
important message.
 Respect- It is also essential for a effective communication skill to show respect to the
audience (Communication Skills: Definitions and Examples, 2021) . The message which
is shared in an organisation will not contain any content which shows disrespect to the
society and any group of employee within the organisation.
 Understanding body language- It is also essential for effective communication skill that
the individual must understand the non-verbal cues of communication. For example,
moving head horizontally means the individual is communicating “no” and if the
individual move his/her head vortically then it means 'yes'. Such kinds of simple body
language should be known by the individual to gain effective communication skill.
Advantages and disadvantages of technology in communication
Technology in communication consist of those electronic and digital tools which are used for
communication between individuals or a group of individuals (Bibraj and et. al., 2018). The
examples of medium of technological communication are telephones, website, social media
channels, e-mails, mobile phones, television and many others. There are various advantages and
disadvantages of technology used in communication process and these are mentioned below-

Advantages of technology in communication-
 Faster method of communication during emergencies- Using telephones or messages
is considered as faster mode of communication during emergencies (Chistyakova and et.
al., 2021). For example, when a individual is facing a serious health issue and he/she
communicate the message to his/her relatives through a phone call can help him to reach
help as soon as possible.
 Able to communicate from anywhere in the world- Using technology in
communication will help the communicator to convey their message to any individual at
anywhere in the world which is known to him/her. For example, e-mail can be send from
London office to another brand of same office located in Scotland for any business
purpose.
 Cost effectiveness- Telephonic calls and e-mails or any other technological
communication is considered as cost effectiveness because it does not contain a huge
budget to convey the message. Protection of information- When a message is communicated through digital source
then it is considered as protected against any threat or hacking activity by any other party.
Disadvantage of communication technology-
 Harder to use for older generation people- The technology of cell phones, social media
channels and many others are run and operated easily by today's generation people
because they are frank and seen the technology from their childhood and they have learnt
the computers and other digital technology usage in their academic career

hand, it is tough for old generation people to communicate with advanced and modern
technology because they have no knowledge about how to use such technology in their
daily life.
 Cyber threads- Most of the social media accounts get hacked by the hackers for wrong
purpose. Hence, some of the technologies which is used for communication is not
secured or protected well.
 Technical issues can create miscommunication- In case any digital device will get
defected than the communication will get affected badly (Al-Ansi, Garad and Al-Ansi,
2021). For example, in case a manager is communicating any message to his subordinate

through phone call but due to the network issue of that particular area the message has
not reached by the employee in a same manner which is expected.
 Not always sure that whether the communication is reached by correct individual or
not- Using digital way of communication or using advance and modern devices for
communication is also affected by the disadvantage that the person on phone calls are not
always sure that they are communicating their confidential message to right person or
not.
CONCLUSION
From the above information it is concluded that communication skill is one of the most
essential skill for a individual to develop their personal and professional career. There are models
and theories of communication like Aristotle's Model of Communication, Shannon-Weaver
model of communication and few others. It is essential to provide feedback in communication
process to make clear idea that communication is received by the receiver in such a manner
which is expected by sender. There are various elements which can help an individual to enhance
their communication skill like conveying complete and clear message, listening appropriately,
changing communication style as per the audience interest and many others. It is also concluded
that there are various advantages and disadvantages of technology used in communication
process.
