1EFFECT OF DIVORCE ON CHILDREN
Divorce is not just the separation of spouses, it is also the estrangement of children from
their beloved ones, their support and care providers. Sometimes divorce might be the sole resort
to seek respite from an unhappy marriage, but it is does exert life changing influence on the
children, which could be emotional, legal and economic in nature (Kalmijn 2015).
As far as the emotional factor is concerned, the children are goaded into the stress that is
undergone by the spouses as a result of separation. Divorce between spouses can generate
negative effect on the emotions and psyche of the children, and that shall be escalated especially
when they shall be seeing their peers leading a happy life with their parents. A sense of lacking
and deprivation shall be bothering them forever. This can cause the children to develop distaste
for family life, as they tend to view marital life as a curse. They can even turn delinquent and
commit crime as divorce also means the strong support base of both the father and the mother
getting eroded (Kalmijn 2015).
Legally, divorce entails the issue of guardianship and custody. The child might be legally
put under the custody of either of the parents, but that shall cause much confusion and
embarrassment to the child, when he or she shall be asked about their parental recognition
(Leopold and Kalmijn 2016).
Economically, the upbringing of the child can be affected. It depends on who gets the
custody of the child. If that is granted to the parent who earns less, or has no earning at all, it can
affect the upbringing of the child (Leopold and Kalmijn 2016).
These are some of the generic negative effects of spousal divorce.
