INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Violence is an aggressive attitude of a person against another that may result in suffering
physical or mental harm by the person to whom violence has been made. Furthermore, the ter,
domestic violence can be defined as unethical and aggressive behaviour of a spouse towards their
partner and giving them physical harm. It can also be said that the domestic violence is unethical
and threatening behaviour of a person against their spouse. This gender of person does not
matter in case of domestic violence. Further, domestic violence can be either in physical, mental
or psychological aspect. It includes threatening someone regarding withholding of money,
providing physical harm by cutting, beating or hitting another person, rape, reading someone's
emails, text messages, etc.
The legal system of UK contains a range of rules, regulations and laws in this context.
These laws have been prepared by the government in order to prevent the overall population of
the country from harmfulness of domestic violence. The English legal system has developed a
special family law that contains a range of rules and regulations regarding domestic violence. In
addition, this law also includes rules in order to providing aid to the people suffering from
domestic violence. Moreover, this law also helps the spreading effective controlling measures in
all over the country and reducing the probability of happening of such activities as well.
The present study is based on the topic effect of domestic violence on adult life of young
women. This research project will provide a better understanding about seriousness of the
domestic violence along with its harmful effect over life of people suffering from such unethical
and aggressive behaviour of partners. It will include a study over the impact of such behaviour
over physical and psychological health of people. In addition, the dissertation will provide a brief
understanding over harmfulness of domestic violence over life of young women.
The dissertation will use a range of tools and techniques of research regarding collection
numerous data for analysing the actual impact of domestic violence. Further, the scholar will
adopt various tools in order to analyse all the collected data and their interpretation in order to
derive the actual results of the research. The present dissertation will use secondary method of

data collection. This method will help in improving the quality of collected data by using all the
reliable sources for data collection purpose.

been chosen so as to spreading the knowledge among the researcher and readers of dissertation
about the seriousness of domestic violence in the country. It has also been chosen for the purpose
of improving the understanding of readers regarding use of the harmful impact of the behaviour
of spouse towards their partners. In addition, the topic has also been adopted by the scholar in
order to helping the governing bodies in spreading awareness among the population regarding
seriousness and harmfulness of behaviour causing domestic violence and contributing the
government in controlling activities relating to domestic violence in all over the country.

Significance
The present dissertation will lead in spreading awareness regarding seriousness of the
aggressive behaviour that may cause domestic violence towards another person. It will help in
making the readers aware about detecting the domestic violence within the society and making
aware about the way through which they can provide the knowledge about how they can help the
person suffering from the domestic violence. In addition, the study will also help in spreading the
knowledge about the domestic violence among young women and its significant impact over
their own adult life. Furthermore, it will help in improving their knowledge regarding several
laws available in the UK legal system through which they can prevent themselves from such
behaviour of their partner. In this regard, the present dissertation will lead in helping the
Government regarding spreading awareness among young women regarding the topic and
helping them in avoiding domestic violence from their own life.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature review in a research project explains the views, opinion and perceptions of
different author and writers over the given research topic. The views are both in favour and
contradiction which are presented under various section which are extracted from the research
topic. For the present research project over investigating the seriousness of domestic violence
the literature review determined the effects of domestic violence on the mental and physical
status of women, the negative impact of adult women and the legislative framework dealing with
domestic violence. In this, views and opinion are taken from books, journals and scholarly
articles to present the thoughts of different person over domestic violence and its impact on
women.
Theme 1 : Seriousness of domestic violence
Zeol and et.al., (2017) has addressed domestic violence as one of the most serious issue
in the society. The author states that it violates the fundamental rights of women. Attempting
domestic violence against women often causes serious injurious to women both mentally and
physically and many times it often leads to death of the victim. The author stipulates that victims
of domestic violence are mostly women, about 95% cases supports that women are the victim in
such cases. Domestic violence is considered as serious problems because of the effect and
trauma it leaves on the mental and physical health of the victim who most of the time are
women. Callaghan and et.al., (2018) on the other hand claims that domestic violence may have
short and long term effect on the women. For instance, a women who has or is suffering from
domestic violence might be having minor injuries which include bruises, broken bones, cuts and
injuries on the other parts of the body. Further, the author states that violence against women can
have serious effects over the physical health for long term such as arthritis, asthma, chronic pain,
sleeping problems, heart problems, stress, etc. Moreover, it is also stipulated by the author that
women starts drinking alcohol and doing drugs for escaping from the trauma which was a result
of domestic violence. Moreover, it reduces the productivity of the person in area since the
stability of mind of the affected person is lost and thereby cannot perform the routine functions
with same effectiveness.
However, Showalter (2016) argues with the views of above author and claims that it is
not only the women who suffers but also their children who grow up watching domestic violence
in their homes. This makes the issue even more serious as it destroys the life of one who is

experiencing it and the one who is watching it being committed on their mothers or on their
relatives. When children also lives in the house where the violence is committed on the regular
basis then it often lead to child abuse too, which has a everlasting bad memories for the child
throughout its life. Lucas and et.al., (2016) states that effects of domestic violence not only
become a bad experience or memory for the children throughout its life but it also hamper the
progress in mental growth of the children. From the early stage itself, children are likely to
behave arrogantly and by the time they reach into their teenage, they starts intruding the phase of
depression.
However, Bates and et.al., (2017)it is stated by that the domestic violence is a taboo in
the society where it is been practiced from century and still have not been mitigated totally. It is
a serious crime and one out every four women have experienced domestic abuse in her lifetime.
The facts shows that only 1 women out of 100 women gets effected because of the domestic
violence. This shoe the seriousness of this rime where the percent of violence of women is 25%
and effect on them is only 1 %, which depict ts the fact that they are getting used to this practice
of their husband or father and not taking an action against in 21st century also.
Theme 2 : Effects of domestic violence on the mental and physical health of women
In the view of Forke and et.al., (2019), behaviour of a intimate partner towards other
partner is such that it causes harm in terms of mentally, physically or sexually is considered as
violence being committed in a relationship. Such an abusive relationship significantly distort the
mental and physical conditions of the women. It has been stated by the author that severity of
domestic violence in terms of duration is directly linked to the severity of depression symptoms.
The author articulates that in most of the cases, effects of domestic violence results in the form of
self directed harms such as suicidal attempts, self harm, development of arrogant behaviour
towards family members that disturbs the harmony in other relationships. While Tavoli and
et.al., (2016) states that intentional violence towards women such as torture, rape, bullying,
abuse have much long lasting and intense effects on the victims as compared to unintentional
violence committed against them.
Foshee and et.al., (2016) advocates that domestic violence either committed intentionally
or unintentionally have same effect on the person. Sometimes the unintentional violence
committed against the women are so intense that it leads to the death of a victim. This is the
extreme effect of domestic violence issue. The author says that in many cases, an act of domestic

violence leaves a person with lifelong disability. Many health problems starts taking place in the
affected women such as hypertension related problems, heart problems, insomnia, disturbance in
the immune system and digestive systems of the women etc. On the other hand, Kimball (2016)
advocates that domestic violence have much more serious impact on the mental health of people
that it literally destroys the major part of their lives. It leaves such a trauma in the minds of the
women who have or is suffering from the domestic abuse, they go into depression which
becomes the root cause of many other problems within the aggrieved person. The level of
depression leads to such a level , that it results into alcohol and drug misuse, anxiety issues and
much worse is increase in the frequency of suicidal attempts by the women. Thus, it is said by
the author that domestic violence is a life taking serious issue which is prevailing to a large
extent in the society around the world.
However Hester and et.al., (2015), stated that domestic violence is a that phenomenon
where is a women is beaten up and injured by her own family members be it her parent, husband
or siblings. Generally, it is stuck to the husband only who in order it show their superiority in
this patriarchy society beat up the women to prove their manhood. The women in this are injured
from both inside and outside. On the outside they are physically hurt where the women can heal
but scars are are left behind. Form the inside the women get hurt in so many ways she losses
faith in herself, her self-esteem is ruined and she do not posses any confidence to take a stand of
her own. In this was domestic violence is that practice done by the men in the society where they
treat women as their slave ruin the life of their wife and daughters.
Theme 3 : Impact of domestic violence on the adult life of women
In the opinion of Sullivan and et.al., (2018), any women who has suffered abuse or
domestic violence has some intense and adverse impact on the adult life of the women. One of
the aspect where women is completely pissed off from domestic abuse, is its efficiency in the
professional and routine work. The mind stability is adversely affected so much that women
tends to become less efficiency in their work and because of which their quality of life reduces.
On the other hand, Foshee and et.al., (2015) many a times, women starts having negative feelings
for all the person that are around the affected women which puts the women in even more worse
conditions. Such hatred is developed only because of abuse women faces in their daily lives.
They starts having trust issues with other people that does not allow the women to create a
soothing and refreshing environment around them. The author states that continuous domestic

violence if being committed on a women, then it results into building of miserable adult life for
such domestic abused women.
As per the views of Kimball, (2016), abusing women and domestic violence over the
women is completely disturbing the development of the adult life such women which results in
the heavy damages to the society as well as the surrounding environment of such women.
Several times such women can't come back from such situations in which they had faced all such
ridiculous abusement and violence in their past , the consequences of such environment and
situation leads to reduction in the mental growth and ability of decisioning power regarding such
women.
Further in this context Lucas and et.al., (2016) said that many times such domestic
violence is not opposed by the women themselves as they are not aware of law and regulation,
this degrades the confidence of a person and the women dignity as well. Domestic violence and
abusment destroys the self dignity of confident women and it also unwraps the evil side of the
society and environment which is disgraceful towards the women and simultaneously affecting
the adult life of such women.
However in the constitution Foshee and et.al., (2015) has a view that several
laws,regulation and policies are meant but they remain only in the documented form and person
keeps on its domestic violence and abusement over the women. This leads to failure of the
legislative system which creates the scenario in the mind of such women that they have no option
regarding to oppose such violence. This results in confidence breaking of women, reduction of
the working women's efficiency, getting affected by the mental sickness, feeling of depression,
degradation of strength and dignity, damage to strong image in society and many more which are
harmful in all the aspects to such women and their adult life.Thus, it is said or can be concluded
as the domestic violence against women destroys adult life of such women and reduces the
efficiency simultaneously mental strength this leads to such condition in which the adult life as
well as social life of women affected adversely.
On the other hand it is stated byCallaghan and et.al., (2018) that young women who are
being beaten up or experiences other types of abuses in her domestic life gets stuck in the cocoon
of fear, emotional retrenchment, psychological trauma and this directly effect the life they live,
diminishing their way of living and lead them to live a miserable life form inside. Also, the
young lady who sees their mothers or sisters facing domestic violence gets stuck to those

memories and this effect their mental status where start to fear about that life and distance
themselves from living a normal happy life.
Theme 4: Laws, rules and regulations existing in the country for protection of women against
domestic violence
As per the views of Choudhry and Herring, (2017) strong laws and legislation can protect
women form domestic violence and abuse they face while living in their homes. One in three
women worldwide is a victim of domestic abuse from their intimate partner and almost 38% of
the women in the world are being murdered by their partners. This is serious facts and t rings a
bell for establishment of stronger and strict laws over abolish of domestic violence and abuse
against women. The rules and regulations are also required to be formulated and effectively
implemented in order to protect women as well take serious action hose who are involved in such
criminal activity.
On the other hand Ferrari and et.al., (2016) have an opinion that domestic violence
disclosure scheme is one the crucial measures taken by the government where people are being
enabled to ask police to carry out the checks for a record of abuse offenses on their partners or
partners of friend or family member for determination any risk of domestic abuse on them. In
this regards the care Act, 2014 have also replaced the provisos section with the provisions related
to safeguarding adults at risk of abuse or neglect. This depicts that actions are being taken to
abolish reduces the practice of domestic violence and abuse in UK. With detecting the rinks prior
to its happening a woman can be safeguarded form bring a victim of such crime and her life can
be saved and this protection lead her to live a happy and normal life by restricting her form
entering into an abusive marriage or relationship.
However, Siddiqui, (2016) have a perception that the laws are necessity for punishing
those who are indulged in such criminal activities and stopping domestic abuse on women of
UK. For this domestic, violence, crime and victim act, 2004 have been formed which is related
with crime justice for adults and children providing a direction of legal protection and assistance
to the victims facing domestic abuse all over the UK (Legislation, 2019). Also part 5 of the
Serious crime act, 2015 have defines the extend scope for the offenses of domestic abuse and
have updated the low around the female genital mutilation with a UK wide legislative
applicability.

Conversely Flick, (2015), it is said by that Scottish parliament have enacted the Abusive
behaviors and Sexual harm act in 2015, which is applicable in Scotland only and this have
improves the justice system in Scotland for responding to abusive behaviors and have given a
new direction to courts and juries to deal with abuses cases. Also, the government of wales have
introduced Violence against women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual violence Act in 2015 as well
which have places treasured to reduced gender bases violence and Wales and have an aim of
creating and raising awareness about domestic violence. With this the laws applicable to each
different country of UK as well for UK as one nation have been formed and implements on order
to stop the crime of domestic violence and take strict action against those who are involved in
such criminal activity.
