medication error in healthcare settings is related to the improper use of the electronic health record system
as the nurses are not aware of the proper usage of the system. therefore, the learning objective for
registered nurses would be including the following aspects:
To understand the proper usage of EHR or the electronic health record system.
To enlist the challenges which they face while using or working with the electronic health record
system in the facility.
To identify the interventions or processes using which this process can be validated.
Purpose of eposter in addressing the identified learning need(500 words): The primary aim of ePoster is to
provide a detailed and complete awareness about any topic which is necessary for the quality care and
maintenance of the standard of healthcare facility. In this ePoster, discussion about proper usage and
maintenance of electronic health record system. There are several researches that determine the fact that
majority of the nursing professionals in helathcare facilities around the world suffer from this medication
error related to EHR (Roughead, Semple and Rosenfeld 2016). The obstacles in complying with the protocol related
to proper EHR utilization includes inability of the nursing professionals to understand the effect of simple
medication error or record related loopholes. Further, their inability of adding the patient reports on time is
another issue which leads to helathcare or medication error. It has been reported in the data of research by
Menon et al. (2014) that 50% of the medication error is attempted by nursing professionals who joined the
profession after completing their education. Further, it should also be mentioned that the professionals
were also able to identify the interventions using which, these errors could be prevented. The interventions
which were used for the compliance of nursing professionals towards the successful usage and maintenance
of EHR system was, firstly, they will be provided with proper practical education regarding the medicational
error and the proper usage of the electronic health record system. therefore, in order to decrease the
relevance of late update or missing update at time, the nursing professionals will be asked to add the details
on time so that any update can be found on the system on time and no data is found missing from the data
record system (Middleton et al. 2013). For this purpose, it is important for the organisation to include strict rules
for the nursing professionals for updating the medical health record system and apply their education in the
process. Further, maintenance of this is also an important process as it will promote safe medication
practice and data record policies so that it cannot affect the quality care facility for the person. Further while
training processes for the usage of electronic health record system, proper usage related flow chart should
be provided to the nursing professionals. Further it has also been witnessed that due to the proper
documentation of the helathcare program, the nursing professionals are able to provide quality care to the
patients and therefore the care process complies (Meeks et al. 2014).
Some of the challenges encountered while preparing this learning resource were related to compilation of
relevant scholarly articles that matched the PICO question of interest in the poster. Brief critical appraisal of
the articles and a sequential arrangement of the findings helped in successful completion of the e-poster.
